There is no contest between "Public Health vs. Economy", because public health *is* the economy. We're seeing this in micro-scale in Georgia where, despite the governor's attempts to re-open the state (far too early), consumer and employer confidence is still extremely low. Many businesses have said they will not open, despite the state lifting restrictions, and many consumers will still be staying home. In essence, Georgia is going to get the worst of both worlds - the increased social interaction is going to result in more sick and dying people, straining the health situation, while the continued withdrawal of those businesses and consumers unwilling to join in the "re-opening" will continue to drag on the economy.

Filling your workforce with sick and dying workers is not going to kickstart the economy; it's going to prolong the pain, because it's going to cripple affected businesses by destroying their workforce and driving away customers, and will also allow the virus to spread farther and faster and therefore maximize the amount of time recovery will take. Consumer confidence will remain low for as long as this virus is out there; I know I'm sure as fuck not going anywhere I don't have to until the healthcare professionals - not the politicians - give the all-clear.

The quickest path to economic recovery is to do what the doctors say. It's slow going now, but it will pay off in the end.

Literally no one is saying this.

By the time Trump closed the border with China (notably, he was actually not the first leader to do so, as Japan, Italy, Russia, and North Korea had all implemented similar or more strict bans prior to Trump), the virus had already spread to the US. Closing the border at that point would not stop the spread of Coronavirus, because the spread was already happening within the country.

At best, Trump bought himself time. And the problem is he did almost nothing with that time. He didn't stock up on ventilators or other hospital supplies, didn't sound the early alarm about the virus, didn't ramp up testing, didn't do anything that would slow the virus's spread or mitigate it's impact.

Actually, even that's giving him too much credit, because doing nothing would have actually been an improvement over what he did do: spent the next six weeks downplaying the virus, promising that everything was under control, and accusing the Democrats and media of exaggerating the effects of a massive global pandemic purely to make him look bad. Only when the stock market crashed did he finally start to take notice, and by then it was far too late. Trump pissed away three months of advance warning about the virus and the US is now suffering for it.

Not really. Not in the same sense that Westerners use the word.

"Racism" in the USA is where someone shouts a racial slur at you as they toss a beer bottle at your head. Or where you will be suspected of being a criminal and be treated differently by law enforcement purely because of your race. There's genuine hostility to it, which is rare to see in Japan.

What you do encounter in Japan is that if you're not ethnic Japanese, you'll be treated as a foreign visitor, which comes with a lot of assumptions - that your ability to speak Japanese is probably limited or non-existent, that you don't know the culture, and just generally that you're not "from there". Those generally wind up being safe assumptions - Japan is 97% ethnic Japanese, most of the remainder is made up of other ethnically east-Asian peoples, and of the non-Asian populace, most are temporary workers doing things like teaching English. The number of non-Asian citizens in Japan is extremely low, so if you don't look like you're from there, you're probably not.

So yeah, you wind up facing prejudice in Japan all the time, but I hesitate to call it racism, because that has a number of connotations that don't apply there.

Blaming it on Trump is just silly

Or it would be, if Democrats and his own advisors weren't sounding the alarm on this as early as last December. By mid-January, Chuck Schumer was asking Trump to declare a national health emergency and Democrat senators were writing Alex Azar and asking if the executive needed any additional funds or resources from congress. Both communications were apparently ignored, as no substantive changes in the administration's approach came from them.

Trump had three full months to prep for coronavirus and start getting the country ramped up to deal with the influx. Instead, terrified that the disease would hurt his re-election prospects, he spent his time going to rallies and playing golf, all while insisting the virus was nothing to worry about and the situation was well under control and people should just go about their lives and enjoy themselves. Only when the stock market completely crashed did Trump finally start taking it seriously, but by then it was too late - all of the lead time the US had was squandered, and it is now the worst-affected country on the planet.

Trump didn't create the virus and it spreading to US shores was inevitable, but he's done an excellent job in making sure that the US was as ill-prepared as it could possibly be and still manages to continue bungling the response (how many weeks did he wait to activate the DPA?).

Oh, and for an added kicker, his economic mismanagement is now biting him in the ass hard. Climbing out of the economic doldrums that the country is going to be mired in when the virus finally does subside is going to be extremely difficult, because Trump already turned the stimulus taps on full blast despite having inherited a roaring economy from the Obama administration. His tax cut has kneecapped federal earning power and the multi-trillion economic bailout is going to be tacked onto a deficit that was already on track to clear a trillion dollars a year this year. And given that taxpayer earnings are going to be shit this year - and, again, Trump has made this as painful as possible - the finances are going to take ANOTHER hit from tax revenue bottoming out, essentially bearing significant downward pressure from three different sources, all of which Trump had a hand in. And he can't even turn to most of the tried-and-true methods of stimulating growth, like lowering interest rates, because he was already doing that before this all hit.

Trump has managed this situation pretty much as badly as he possibly could have and it's laughable to suggest otherwise.

The economy is shit and it will stay shit, regardless of what we do because, surprise surprise, filling your workforce with sick and dying workers isn't good for economic growth.

If anything, going back too early is just going to create a knock-on effect where we get the worst of both worlds: more death AND a longer recovery time for both people and the economy.

One of his appointees has refused to convene the Knesset to pass new legislation (in another of the aforementioned wacky coincidences, one of the bills up for consideration was one that would prevent any individual that is charged with a crime from serving as Prime Minister) and is now defying a Supreme Court order that says that he must allow the votes to proceed, including those that would potentially replace him.

I'm, like, 85% sure most of these rants are astroturfing in the hopes of suppressing Democrat turnout. Yes, the Chinese government fucked up their initial response. So did the US. So did a lot of places.

That is entirely immaterial anymore. Yell and finger point all you like about whose fault it is that the virus got this bad, but ultimately none of that is particularly important right now. The main thing people *should* be focused on is how to stop the spread.

At this point, it really doesn't matter where the virus started, because it's everywhere now.

...except the spread was largely due to people visiting foreign countries, catching the disease there, then returning home. Last I saw (which was, admittedly, about a week ago, so it may be out of date now) there are precisely zero cases that have been sourced to someone immigrating, legally or otherwise.

Border security would have done shit to stop this. Better testing would have stopped this, or at least helped mitigate the spread. A bit late for that now, though, because this isn't "a foreign disease" (whatever that means) anymore - it's spread, and the main form of transmission will now be from within the community, not from travellers or foreigners.
