i should elaborate that i've since stopped, since i had to get a more fancy printer that has a scanner built into it, and those are decidedly more expensive than ink.

I've done that. I only ever use a printer for basic printing, so I don't need anything all that precise or crystal clear. And buying a cheap printer at Wal-Mart is literally cheaper than buying a single ink cartridge even at discount prices.
