I don't think any of the Dragon Warrior games hold up from the NES. 3 and 4 are better than 1 and 2, but are still very archaic in many ways.

I would prefer Crystalis to any of them to be honest. I have them all currently as carts, and in this moment, popping Crystalis in is preferable to the Dragaon Warrior quartet.

I'll caveat that by saying 3 has an awesome world, but the gameplay is ehhh.

DQ4 is one of the best games in the entire series. The one main drawback in the NES version is that you only really controlled the main character's turns, and set tactics for the rest. The DS remake let you do everything manually, and improved on an all time classic.
