Top loaders are a hassle because of the pillar in the middle gets off-balanced easily. If you get a big top loader you'll have to lean in real deep in the washer to pull out your clothes and might even slip inside. Some of those newfangled top loaders without the center agitator are cool, but the water efficiency and potential drainage issues are drawing me to the front loaders. --- |

We're gonna save a lot on closing costs so we're thinking about springing for some nice units that will last us a while. I feel like washer/dryer technology isn't something that really evolves that quickly so it's all about reliability. I also heard that washers/dryers sold at big box hardware stores are of lesser quality than ones sold at dedicated appliance stores but I'm not sure if I believe that. --- |

Try to find out the cycle times so you don't have to wait a long time to do your laundry. "water efficient" washers might have a 'quick wash' cycle which can take 32 minutes or less instead of an hour. We're currently living with some friends in their house while we close on our place and we do this. Quick wash + extra rinse = 39 minute cycle. --- |
