We're doing the auction Monday I think

One of the funnier moments in recent memory...

I'm running around the bloodsail cove in STV. I see a chest spawn with no mobs around it. I start heading over, and realize there's an alliance player 5 levels lower than me who's going to get there first. I decide to let him have it, and I just stand there emoting while he's opening it. Then suddenly out of nowhere, a 60 forsaken rogue named Shankmonger /yells "FOR HILLSBRAD!!!" and ganks the dude, then vanishes. I /mourned his corpse and then looted the chest. Lol.

Turn based bidding is just a lot simpler to manage than an actual live auction. It's the same way bidding works in a variety of other games.

You start with 1 or a few characters and recruit others as you go

I think I managed to talk them into the asymmetric roster sizes rule

Usually I find Snake order to be the best for drafts. Randomize the order of who picks, and then reverse the order every round. (that means people on the ends pick two)

We talked through it. Started on snake but basically when you boil it down, an auction in every possible way raises the skill ceiling.

What we settled on:

-Randomize an order
-We take turns nominating characters for auction
-By nominating a character you automatically submit a minimum bid for them (so you can't start out by nominating crappy characters unless you're willing to have them on your roster)
-If you run out of money, you automatically pass on all auctions until everyone else is either out of money or at max character limit
-If a scenario happens where multiple people are in auto-pass mode but don't have a full roster yet, then they just continue in the same order except just claiming players outright as opposed to bidding

We're allowing restarts but counting it as a game over. And yeah like I said we are still drafting the rules.

None of us liked the idea of turn count. We aren't good at the game so it's heavily slanted toward survival and being extra cautious and meticulous. I'm sure turn count will end up on the tiebreaker list but it'll be way down there.

I did pitch the idea to them that we shouldn't enforce character limits and just let the auction play out however it plays out. If someone drops big money on a handful of good units and someone else spends chump change to have 6 additional shitty units, so be it. But the group didn't like that idea. They felt it made the draft strategy a bit too much to contemplate for what it's worth.

I've only been online 2 nights a week max. 2-3 hours per session. Havin a good time. Guild went into uldaman the other night, all of us pretty low level. We got to the final boss, gave it one shot, and all agreed it was not worth a second attempt lol. I was below 70% mana before I landed a single hit on him.

Yeah I think we're just gonna say no need for a concrete rule, just stay within the obvious spirit of the challenge

We thought about imposing a relatively lax turn limit per chapter to prevent boss abuse, though then the point was brought up about farming supports which can take a lot of turns. Any ideas here?

We realized that it was pointless to establish a strict game over limit if we're just going to use fewest game overs as the first tiebreaker anyway. So it'll just be play until you beat the game (or give up) and whoever gets the farthest with the fewest game overs wins. Next tiebreaker is total sidequests completed. Haven't defined it beyond that.

Sure, you wanna level up Lyn some, and if you got another Lyn's Tale character, level them up some.

But Matthew is just so good and you have him immediately starting Hector's Tale in chapter 11.

Nino is literal garbage tier here. But, we're not going to ban her outright. At the very least, you can guaaranteed physically recruit her and use her without breaking rules (unlike Karla). Like she can hold items. Or kill things that have low HP. A warm body.

We're probably just gonna leave it to where 1-2 spots just get left up to whoever nobody drafts.

Like, sure bartre is bad, in general, in a casual play of the game.

But the sheer virtue of being a warm body available early in the game has a serious value in this context. Like he's a dude who can do things. Compared to not having an extra person who can do things.

We're trying to only guarantee/ban characters that outright break the system. Beyond just "Marcus has stats" but more like "a thief enables such a significant amount of stuff it's like playing a different game if you don't have one"

Or "karla literally is unusable if someone else drafts bartre"

One of those things the auction system works out. Lyn's Tale characters obviously have increased weight, so you spend more on them.

Ran it past the group, we agreed on:

Guarantee Matthew
Ban Karla

And we'll work on an additional 2 slots, whether to guarantee or ban or just leave it to the last characters unpicked just don't get rostered.

Response to guaranteeing Marcus was, he's not such a crutch that the auction system doesn't work it out. Whoever wants him is gonna have to pay.

Response to guaranteeing Nils was just a pretty plain "No that's dumb."

Matthew though, everyone agreed his sheer utility is just tiers above any other character. So he'll be guaranteed.

Ok so after your all's input here's what I'm tempted to say to the group:

Marcus, Matthew, and Nils should be guaranteed. Athos is banned (this one just to keep it divisible by 4)

Set a game over limit greater than zero.

Completing the game is first win condition, in case of a tie, fewest turns wins.
