| Gafemage 05/22/19 10:14:43 PM #9 | A day late but better now than never I suppose... Main criticism would likely be the length. I had the same gripe with this movie that I did with The Fog (1980) when I watched it a few years ago in that the build-up segment of the movie went on just a little too long for a film not even 90 minutes in duration. As for the "horror" aspect: Obviously as a pre-60s movie, the film is light on scares; however, I will say that the climactic scene felt more like a thriller than a horror flick - not necessarily a bad thing. Acting ranged from cheesy to passable, but given the inherent cheesiness of early horror flicks even the weaker performances just added to the fun. From a contemporary standpoint, the visible influence the movie has had on later films is pretty staggering. The aspect and execution of teenagers banding together to investigate a public safety threat mishandled by adults feels like an early blueprint for later pop cultural hits such as Scooby Doo, Blue Velvet, Stranger Things, etc. The "monster in a meteorite" concept has also been done countless times in fiction, and I could be wrong but The Blob might have been the first film to utilize said concept?? The special effects used to create the monster are also worth mentioning. Overall far from a flawless horror movie, but plenty enjoyable regardless! Oscillating between a 6.5 & a 7/10 here. --- |
