Like I noted, my relative was a national sports journalist (papers) from the early 80s until around 2010. He covered MLB, NFL, NHL, college athletics and covered multiple Olympics. Although he is a huge basketball fan, he didn't really do much with the NBA regularly. He was a print guy, only appearing on TV at the local/regional levels. But his stuff would go out nationally on the wire services.

He is retired now but still does some gig work here and there for the MLB and NHL. His office was getting gutted of staff and they were bringing in more contract writers or gig writers. The standard corporate America, do more with less, at a lower quality.

Basically, the media is f'ed in all fields. Journalism is dying replaced by the opinions of the hoi polloi repackaged to the public by corporations are people for pennies in pay but benjamins in profits in the form of embrace debate.

I have only posted here the past year or so. Most the other boards I did are either dead or lack new blood, so old drama still runs them.

So i have no idea what this board liked or did not.

Gawker was tabloid trash, but the sites also had some fearless reporting, thought provoking opinions, and not filled with BS clickbait top 10 lists with one entry per page or needless video content.

I love deadspin. Been a reader for close to a decade. It has gone downhill recently, not the writers fault but the management. I was a big gawker family reader across all their sites. They are all just shells of their former selves.

A direct relative of mine was a national sports writer. He retired a few years ago noting the whole industry was going to hell in a handbasket. So this does not surprise me.

The whole ritualized warfare is a pretty outdated model. Roel Konijnendijk's book classical Greek tactics does a great job on explaining the origins on the developmentof the ritualized concept as well as dispelling the myths surrounding it. A perfect example is how Greek armies were lead from the right but as Konijnendijk points out we have more examples of armies being led from the center and left than the right, and the Spartans even beat Epaminondas to his supposed innovation. Greek warfare was riddled with ambuscades, sieges, taking advantage of terrain, cavalry and missile troops, etc. It wasn't an all hoplite affair on the open plains. There's a section in war and violence in ancient greece that highlights the use of ambushes and trickery and how much it was praised in Greek warfare. Even looking at how the Greeks fought the Persians one can see that the Greeks avoided having to fight the Persians on level ground, instead relying on terrain to their advantage.

As for limiting causalities Hans van Wees defeat and destruction is an excellent read that defeats that myth and shows how extremely violent the Greeks were towards one another in war.

https://www.academia.edu/29666687/Defeat_and_Destruction.pdf

Dr. Konijnendijk book also has a great section dedicated on how the rout and slaughter of the enemy was the primary goal of pitched battle in Greek warfare.

Interesting. I was just reading direct texts and not so much scholarly research. I've read a fair amount about the sieges in Syracuse and it didn't seem to square well the idea of the ritualized battle. However, I just dismissed that assuming that war, given its overall scale, just shifted away from ritualized battle into a more a more total war model.

The ritualized battle stuff even doesn't sqaure too well with Homer, but I sort of figured he just embellishing for dramatic effect.

1 v 1 I have to figure the Samurai has the advantage over the Spartan Hoplite. I'm considering this at peak Sparta, like post Athenian defeat in the Peloponnesian War. I assume the dory and shield would provide good defense, but would limit the mobility of the lone hoplite. I'm presuming if the samurai made it into close combat, the advantage would be his with better agility and the possibly the ability to wear the Spartan out at very least. The Spartan's best hope would be to javalin the samurai before this happened -- a la the duels in the Illiad.

A lot of Greek city state warfare was also heavily ritualized. It wasn't always focused on inflicting mass causalities. It also relied on lots of traditions when it came to whose forces were where on the battle lines.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Greek_warfare

I spent last year reading Thucydides, Homer, and Herodotus and learned a fair amount about the subject.

This is part of the reason why Macedonia had a ton of success against the Greek city states in the era of Phillip II and Alexander.

I had no student loan debt. My family paid for it all. 7 years total. I did not find work immediately, and when I did, I was able to save right off the bat.

I believe in debt forgiveness. I was lucky and had a parachute. Most people do not. My life would have been ruined without one. Instead, I had the breathing room to get my life in order. Even though I had to deal with being a fresh grad in the middle of an economic collaspe with a post grad degree.

I am not bitter about the prospects of people getting bailed out and my family not. Rather, I am happy others can get a shot like I did.

i used some translated lectures but it was still impossible to comprehend

@Romes187

We had the book. I mean, it was translated from german. It's likely somewhere in my book stack back at my parent's house. Although I might have sold it out of spite.

The course was supposed to be a book by Fichte, a book by Schelling, and then a book by Hegel. We did not make it to Hegel. Everybody had a rough ride with Fichte. We only had a class of like 8 and one of the girls in the course is a philosophy professor in her own right now.

edit

Guess it wasn't the whole thing. It was this specific book. I remember the grey and red cover well.

https://www.amazon.com/Introductions-Wissenschaftslehre-Writings-1797-1800-Classics/dp/0872202399/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=fichte&qid=1571887148&sr=8-1

Cool ideas that can trick you into thinking you understand them quickly, but they go a bit deeper.

Try some Fichte too

The Wissenschaftslehre is the hardest thing I've ever tried reading. I had a 400 level course on it and something by Schelling and wanted to stab my eyes out. It was a fluke they let me take it my freshman year ha ha. Same semester I took a 400 level existential philosophy course. I fell in love the latter but only gained a cautious respect for the former.

I read the Critique of Pure Reason and Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Sketch

I will preface this as noting I'm not super into German Idealism. I've read Fichte, Schelling, and Kant. Some chunks of Hegel as well. I find it generally very cumbersome. I admire their efforts though as being extremely detailed and that is admirable.

On Kant, the categorical imperative is very impressive. His work on the primacy of space and time are well. His political philosophy is very interesting too.

Honest evaluation:

Must read for Modern Philosophy. His ideas and methods are extremely influential. I find them somewhat remote from every day life, but that aside, his works are extremely important.

Edit:

And yes, read Hume. A great intro to modern philosophy is Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy, Hume's An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, and Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Critique is the tome. The others are shorter. I suggest direct texts, read what you can stomach. Find ones with good annotations. My philosophy program placed value on reading the direct texts even at the beginner level instead of textbook cutouts. Part of philosophy is learning how to read it and to read well in general. Sticking to textbooks or omnibuses rob you of that experience.

Upper Ohio Valley region of West Virginia. The county has around 10,000 people total. It had almost 20,000 in 1900. The failure of the rustbelt nuked the economy. We produce huge amounts of natural gas but most of the wealth is moved out of state. My family is a mix of the local medical doctor, newspaper, and independent merchant stock. So, my life was pretty ok. But it was so sad growing up seeing kids who had basically nothing for clothes wear the same things to school every day, and likely only got to eat because of school programs. Heroin and meth the past two decades have made things way worse too.

But I've traveled significantly in Southern West Virginia, the eastern mountain region, and some in Eastern Kentucky.

Rural housing costs might be cheap, but please remember the hidden costs.

You need to drive 25 or 30 miles in many cases just to buy groceries. And you're only option is a dollar general. You may live an hour away from a doctor should you get sick or need a checkup. There's no mass transit or public service. The fire departments are volunteer and my be far away. Police coverage is spotty too. Due to low population, even service jobs can be at a premium given fast food, pharmacies, and gas stations are not on every corner.

As somebody who grew up in rural Appalachia, I've seen rural poverty. It might be in the hollows, creek bottoms, hills, trailers, and shanties, but it is just as isolating, soul crushing, and dehumanizing as urban poverty. Instead of public housing, it's 30 miles from a grocery store, up a creek valley, behind rusted out pickup trucks, and in a trailer covered in coal soot. Or its in a farmstead proudly built 4 generations ago, but now has peeling lead paint, rotting floorboards, on a farm reclaimed by nature.

Poverty is a scourge regardless of where it is happening. Rural and urban poverty are the same sickness with slightly different symptoms.
