When I left my previous job, they replaced it with two new full time positions, and even handed a few of the responsibilities to a third, current staff member as additional responsibilities.

So I was doing the job of 2.5 people and they were paying me for one. Glad I left.

I can't freaking stand this argument. They were smart enough to go to college, they're smart enough to know what a loan is. I hear this same thing about guns and sex ed: "if only there were more education!" Everyone knows if you pull the trigger, it goes bang. If you fhjfehdu inside, babby is formed. If you take out a loan, you have to pay it back.

It is quite obvious to everyone who takes out a loan that they have to pay it back.

What they may not understand is how compounding interest works, and the fact that this makes student loans more expensive then other loans out there.

They may not understand that due to the federal guarantee on a student loan, it will not go away in bankruptcy, so they will be stuck with it forever.

They may not understand that even private student loans can qualify for the same creditor protections as a federal student loan.

They may not understand that having a student loan right after college will already put their credit score at a disadvantage at buying a house or car due to the percentage of their balance not being paid lowering their score.

They may also not realize how much they will likely make in a job post-college (assuming they find a job), compared to the estimated monthly payment they will have to make on a college loan.

These are all aspects of the student loan process that are not "common sense" and requires education to consider whether these stipulations make a student loan worth it.

I don't feel super bad for people who took out $60k loans with absolutely no plot whatsoever.

If they didn't receive financial literacy education, can you blame them? They make the process of receiving student loans easier than applying for a credit card. Students with parents who don't know any better, and/or went to a school that didn't offer much help, wouldn't have known how bad of a deal this is, especially since everyone else is doing it.

Did they want the recruits to shoot the girl, or did Will's reasoning impress the exam proctors because they didn't think of it first?

My wife is an aerospace engineer and adjunct teacher for programming on the side. The disrespect she gets in both jobs is ridiculous. Her boss is intimidated by her because she has more education than him and gives her crap jobs to do. On the rare occasion he gives her something worthwhile and she does it well, she doesn't get the credit for it. In her programming class, there will always be 2-3 male students who challenge her on everything because they feel attacked being taught by a female programmer. I've met one of the guys and he's a very "well acshually" kind of guy at every class.

Relating to the OP, I imagine the model is belittled because some people cannot accept that she has looks and a brain. The only comfort some of these people have when they see such attractive, successful people is that they are stupid. When that is not the case, they get furious.

Ben played a much better and funnier "down to earth" character than Mark did, at least in the earlier seasons before he got even more wacky.

Not in my current job (I think my utilization is actually at a perfect balance for once).

But in my previous job, all the time. I tried asking for more work once, but that backfired as I was just given mundane tasks that really didn't make me feel any more useful.

I've found that it's best for me to find a need within my workforce, and if I have enough flexibility within my job duties, make a proposal to take on a project to fix it. Every once in a while it would work and they'd let me go through with it. The key is coming in to your manager with confidence. Rather than just asking for permission to do it (as it's easier for them to say "no"), tell them that this is a project you plan to work on and if they have any suggestions. If they don't want you working on it, they'll say so, but when you come to them acting as if you are already going to do it but are getting their blessing and advice, I've found they are more likely to just let you do it as is.

My thoughts are generally in line with everyone here.

Movie felt unnecessary, but was fun overall. Key and Peele characters were fun, but felt completely unnecessary to the plot. Keanu's character also felt like they needed to shoehorn another plot in there that was resolved in less than 5 minutes of screentime.

Overall, Forky and Gabby Gabby were the most compelling new characters. I always find it fascinating how Pixar can throw in such adult (and sometimes) dark themes into children's movies and make them family-friendly. Who would of thought parents would take their kids to a movie about a suicidal spork?

As far as returning characters, Woody and Bo got some good development. It's a shame that none of the others did. But I guess the movie would have been too bloated otherwise. I guess Jessie got a few notable scenes in.

Lastly, on a personal note, I'm thrilled they had a cameo from RC. He was my favorite character in the first movie and was sad he was absent in the third. Great that he got a central role in a scene, even if it was only during a flashback.

I have been taking investment classes to try to get into investing and it is very time consuming. Keeping up with all the variables involved with your assets (and don't even get started on derivatives) is a full time job. If that is your main passion in life and want to do it professionally, then sure, go ahead. But most people have full time jobs or businesses to run so they pay financial managers who do it for them.

They handle many accounts so they are already on the know of what is happening in the industry. You pay for the convenience of not having to do the work yourself.

It's like paying a housekeeper to clean your house when you are perfectly capable of doing it yourself. Time is a huge factor. Could you be using that time more productively?

Granted, you also need to see the culture of your job and any leverage you may have. In my most recent job, I had a combination of factors that I could use as leverage that allowed me to negotiate a 100% pay bump. But it's not something I could have done had it been with any other company (or even this one at any other time).

Several adults cannot work due to reasons like health or not being able to afford daycare for their kids. If they had basic income to meet their survival needs, they would be all for being more productive to society. That's why we gotta rank them by usefulness to society and give loans to the most useful ones and to fields we need more people in.

Maybe the politicians should do something to limit tuition increases.

That's the real long term solution.

Most state governments do limit tuition increases. If not for the limits, tuition would actually be a lot higher than it is now.

The workaround is actually through fees. While most states have tuition increase percentage caps, they don't have caps on fees. We've gotten to a point that fees at university colleges cost more than the actual tuition!

What makes it worse is that many scholarships and tuition waivers only cover the cost of tuition. So some students can get a "full ride" to college and still end up with thousands in debt cause of those damn fees. And those are much harder to regulate by the government because the government doesn't usually fund the facilities and services paid through the fees. Those are usually financed through donors. The fees are just to maintain them.

Some employers do, thought that's harder to find in national reports. A lot of STEM companies offer tuition assistance to their employees that want STEM degrees. I have many students at my university that are only there because their employer is paying for it.

Regarding your first point, do you think the ideological college life to entrenched in people at this point?
I remember you work a lot with college kids. Do they expect all these amenities? Would a school lacking one cause them to not go to it?

Yes and no. I do believe that the typical college is a part of life, and society would go crazy if all the colleges suddenly decided to shut down the extra amenities that we've come to expect.

However, with the rise of popularity of online colleges, it shows that people are looking for more affordable education without all the bells and whistles. Even notable universities like Purdue and Stanford are opening up online divisions because they see how much people want them.

I will say that the reason that all these extra college amenities exist is because they have shown to improve student retention rates. There is a general consensus in all of the research out there that students who use these amenities (like recreational facilities, pool tables, pools, comedians) get, on average, higher GPAs, and graduate faster than students who do not. Mental health is a big detractor in finishing college and these extras help with that.

Perhaps there should be some sort of discount program to reward people for pursuing education in more needed occupations. Put all that reporting and regulation to use.

Like say this coming year we have a shortage of mechanical engineers or internal medicine doctors or whatever. Companies and/or the government can provide incentives to the colleges to lower tuition for those programs. Either as funding, alumni care, or supplementing costs by providing training in the form of mentors or facilities/equipment. In return those companies get immediate access to graduated candidates.

When incentive for demand is backloaded on the employer like it is now, colleges can still charge whatever they want.

This is actually being done to an extent. Most scholarships and grants (i.e. not loans) are specifically for STEM fields. And these are funded by the government. You will find much more aid for schooling as a STEM student than as a non-STEM student. For example, international students who attend American universities are allowed to work one year after graduation with their F-1 university visa before they have to leave the country. However, if they came for a STEM degree, they are allowed 3 years instead.

The National Science Foundation is also giving out a crapton of grants to schools with successful STEM programs to use for student scholarships.

So force each College to specialize and simplify the regulations down to one set instead of two and loosen some unnecessary regulation?

Very simple way to look at it, but basically yes.

It's no coincidence that the most successful colleges right now are those that serve a particular niche (like technology colleges, media colleges, teacher colleges, etc).

On the flip side, though, land grant institutions and flagship state colleges, with their hands in all these pots, are now so entrenched in their local economies that if you were to strip them of all these things, it would severely damage the economies of the cities that they are located (and the various suburbs that depend on the city's financial health). It's a delicate situation that would require very careful planning.

There are two main cost drivers of higher education. One is the fault of universities and one isn't.

1) Do-it-all mentality
Universities try too hard to be everything for everyone. Most state universities have fully functioning hospitals, properties they manage, investment management departments, concert venues, and even rock climbing walls. By extending their reach this far, the added costs go towards tuition and fees. In many schools, fees are actually higher than tuition because of all these extra amenities. This could be fixed by having colleges specialize in specific areas again. Have medical colleges with the hospitals, have arts colleges with the large galleries and museums, etc.

2) Increasing regulations
This isn't the fault of universities. With every new year and every new legislation cycle, the government increases regulations, and thus reporting requirements, for universities. Things like the Clery Act require universities to create these reports that are thousands of pages to show every little thing that happens on their campuses, how they responded, what they are doing to be more efficient, etc. This is the government's way to have universities "justify" their existence. Yet the amount of work to collect, compile, analyze, summarize, and submit the data is what is causing all the added costs to hire new administrators and purchase the software systems required to do all of this.

I have worked at several universities where dozens of adminstrators' only task is keeping up with the increasing reporting requirements imposed by state and federal authorities.

The only way to fix this is a loosening of these regulations and allow colleges more flexibility and autonomy. Colleges are a lot more regulated than people believe.

Although some people think its a happy ending when i dont think so

...How in the hell can you say it isn't.

It's pretty dark when you consider that a very religious woman who wanted to die just like her husband, the old natural way, was convinced by a lesbian to abandon the beliefs she held til old age just to live in a virtual heaven. Makes you wonder if the woman made the right choice there considering all everyone did in that world was fulfill their desires, drugs, sex etc. She lived her entire life in faith and abandoned it for a program where she could live forever in "paradise". It might not be the darkest episode buts definitely creepy and very thought provoking.

Based on that logic, I'd argue that Up also had a dark ending, since a very similar thing happens to the protagonist. He essentially stopped living out his life once his wife died and just waited for death away from everyone, only to realize that there was more to life than what he had planned and decided to continue his adventures without her. I think people can grow and realize that not every decision they originally make is in their best interest.
