Mainstream pick I'd probably agree with Wonder Woman. Think it got massively overpraised due to abysmal expectations for any movie with DC branding. It was fine but worse than your typical Marvel origin movie.

Also that summer's slate was awful. And there had never been a well-received female-led superhero movie before.

2017 feels like it was such a s***show for movies that critics acted like anything remotely "good" was practically the second coming. It seems only Star Wars fans caught on.

It's just so well executed in so many ways - cinematography, editing, orchestral score, vfx, creature design, casting. Has group character establishment ever been more efficient than that 150 second chopper ride? Granted they aren't deep characters but I've seen so many movies spend 45 minutes gathering a party that doesn't have half the personality of that crew

I was thinking that too. It's like on par with the police line-up in The Usual Suspects for scenes that establish the main characters so well.

I watched Tron last Sunday and didn't have as good a time as I had last time I watched it (a little over five years ago, this is my second time). It's a pretty typical fantasy story redeemed by an interesting set-up, exposition that feels natural, a compelling lead performance from Jeff Bridges, visuals that are somewhat spell-binding even by today's standards (movie's a bit too proud of its CGI though, but at least it was depicting stuff inside a computer so the datedness has an excuse), and an underrated villain in Edward Dillinger, who seems like someone Trump would get along with. David Lisberger seems like another George Lucas-type who's better at directing special effects than actors. I can see how this movie inspired John Lasseter to make feature-length CGI movies, but too bad he turned out to be the PG version of Harvey Weinstein.

I started Gone with the Wind last night and finished it this morning. I was inspired to watch it by one YouTube channel that posed the question of whether the movie is worth watching in light of a screening of the movie in some vintage theater being cancelled for values reasons, and I'll answer a resounding "yes" with some reservations.

It's more the sheer volume of it and the way people who hate the movie express themselves. Like:

-Acting like the movie sucks for reasons that most people won't care about or pick up on
-Calling critics "paid" or "shills" for liking the movie as if critics HAVE to agree with fans
-Acting like the new films are "attacking our mythology", wow, no one says that about additions to the stories of Casablanca and Gone with the Wind, what's so different about Star Wars?
-Acting like TLJ alone is to blame for the franchise's decline when that makes no sense - e.g. there are other reasons Solo flopped
-Generally acting like Star Wars is only for them rather than being a global phenomenon from the very beginning
-Making some criticisms that just plain carry undertones of bigotry
-Acting like Kathleen Kennedy is some meddlesome freak when if anything, her biggest mistake in running Lucasfilm has been just letting everyone do whatever.

I think the idea with Rey is that she's discovering her force abilities on her own as she goes. While her being overpowered is still a valid criticism, it makes me wonder if some Star Wars fans are so dim-witted they need information spoon fed to them, like how we're literally told of Anakin's force sensitivity in Episode I without having him demonstrate it for a while.

Oh yeah, this and the whole "dropping bombs in space" thing, I mean, I know even in the original trilogy the space combat scenes owed a lot to aerial dogfights, but now it's just reaching the breaking point. Also the First Order could have just shot the Resistance ships fleeing the base at the beginning instead of pounding the base. Oh well. To be fair, this movie's director told people not to worry about how time travel works in Looper so perhaps we should have expected this, but wow the more I think about it Rian Johnson was not a good choice to direct TLJ.

Kylo isn't really meant to be intimidating. I like how he seems to grow into his role as the villain as the films progress. Interesting how for all the flack the sequel trilogy gets for re-hashing the original trilogy, the things it does differently tend to draw the most ire from fans. Although the new stuff TLJ introduces to the franchise feels forced and doesn't contribute much to me.

Never had much problem with The Force Awakens "re-hashing" A New Hope anyway. It isn't even really a re-hash, it just has lots of similar occurrences. The prequels weren't arguably any different, not to mention by this logic many action movies of the '90s were re-hashes of Die Hard. And it's hardly a plot Star Wars invented in the first place anyway!

Also a lot of sequel trilogy haters bring up MauLer, who seems to be to this trilogy what Mr. Pinkett was to the prequels. I've tried watching his critique of The Force Awakens and am 15 minutes into part 2 - and uh, I think he makes some good points about how the film runs on plot contrivances to make it similar to A New Hope, but that information could have been conveyed in A LOT less time. Not to mention I swear he's a robot.

I don't think it's necessarily just as a backlash towards the new trilogy. The prequels are probably just nostalgic to a lot of people now. The 2nd and 3rd Jurassic Park movies have gone through a similar resurgence in popularity, as has Predator 2.

I think the prequel trilogy's main problem was that it simply lacked the widespread appeal of the original trilogy, which is I suppose a little unfair. Conversely many problems with the sequel trilogy seem to arise from an attempt to chase after the same widespread appeal the original trilogy just so happened to have without actively going for it. That being said, when I re-watched the OT last year I finished with more of a desire to see what happens next than what happened before, so I'm firmly in the anti-prequel camp (also remember not liking the films, and when I watched the CinemaWins of them recently I just came away thinking "meh, this is just not for me").

I think it's a combination of the prequels somehow fitting better with the franchise, people who watched them as kids growing up, and the idea that the sequels are worse just because they are made for primarily commercial reasons.

At least one big flaw with The Last Jedi - the excessive amount of Hollywood Tactics - plagues the prequels too.

I actually kind of like Kylo Ren as a character. My biggest gripe with the sequel trilogy is the evil faction being very nebulously-defined to the point it's hard for me to get invested in the story. Kylo's the exception to that, but I understand why people think he doesn't make a good villain.

That said, he's probably a more fleshed-out character than Darth Vader was at this point in the OT.

It's actually kind of nice to see optimism in this topic instead of dread. Feels like a lot of the places where Star Wars fans typically congregate online are the ones most likely to attract people who loathe TLJ and the film's audience reception is otherwise generally good.

Basically, TLJ is not divisive in the typical way, it's more universally-hated by a subset of the Star Wars fanbase and generally well-liked otherwise.

If you're going to call popular recent movies "not cinema", the MCU seems like a weird target to pick. Even the recent Star Wars films would make a better target, to say nothing of stuff like the new Jurassic Park films, the Fast & Furious films, or the Disney live-action remakes.

The MCU movies at least try to prioritize telling good stories in comparison to those other films I mentioned which are specifically meant to be "events" first, stories second.

Strange all around. Also I know it's only like two people, but what is up with the Scorsese bashing in this topic?
