Fun fact, most good story-driven games are linear, especially when it comes to visual novels.
Games that try to branch out and add choices are just trying to be gimmicky. I couldn't imagine Higurashi: When They Cry as a game with branching points and different endings

Also you gotta understand Sony and Nintendo roles have switched in recent years.
In the 90s/2000s, N64/Gamecube were the kiddy consoles with rabid censorship of Japanese games, while Playstation was more lenient with Japanese and let localization companies decide if they wanted to censor or not. Nintendo, on the other hand, went out of their way to censor games even from third parties.
However, since the whole Mary Skelter fiasco in the UK, Playstation has now forced censorship, specifically of Japanese games and Nintendo is actually giving third parties freedom to create whatever they want on their console. Frankly that's how it needs to STAY, with ALL companies.

Replaying Shenmue on the HD collection for Xbox One at the moment. I wanna replay both of them and eventually play Shenmue 3 on PS4. I'm playing with Japanese voices this time since I originally played them on Dreamcast/OG Xbox in English and there was no Japanese option.
The Japanese acting is definitely better, though the English version still has this weird charm that I can't put my finger on. Not sure if I'll play 3 in Japanese or English.

This is understandable given Pokemon has always been geared towards kids, even in Japan. Sure there are more complicated competitive aspects that appeal to adults, but that isn't for everyone.
People in their 20s and 30s who followed Pokemon since the 90s, still want to see the story and want to see new Pokemon, gym leaders, characters etc. are in a minority, just like people who grew up with Power Rangers in the 90s and still follow every new show that comes out to this day are a small obsessed crowd. Most people will lose interest, and that's normal IMO. Just because it made you happy in teh past, doesn't mean it will do the same now.
You could try Digimon Cyber Sleuth. That game is definitely more interesting if you feel like Pokemon is meh.
