According to urban dictionary, it's short for "she-male", which it says isn't a transphobic word, but a way to refer to an androgynous person. I'd never heard of it either.

-No "upgraded" characters. Putting on a cape doesn't make Clark Kent a shapeshifter (nor does undefined retro talents of Superman, for the record). Same goes for anyone in a game that gets an item and just upgrades; that's just part of a video game. Other media "power up" style characters aren't shapeshifters either.

Does this apply to characters wearing masks too? I see Arya Stark, Jaqen Hagar, and Ethan Hunt in the nominations?

Oh no I agree completely. Mute characters can totally have personality and have a ton of character. I'll be one of the first people to defend that. I absolutely adore Meeko.

What I am saying is though does having a smug look and just being pet all the time make you character enough?

I think people have different definitions of character.

To some people (most people probably), they would much prefer the character to have growth throughout a story, to have interesting dialogue, and probably make decisions impactful on the story's plot.

Then you have the people who like prioritize visual design and a general demeanor to a character. Maybe they don't care as much about whether the character changes, or grows. They might like the playful personality of the character through their physical actions. Many mute animals fit this role. Personality and character most definitely come through this, but it's not always to the definition of the first group of people.

Then, if you consider how different those definitions are, you can go even further down to people who like a character entirely based off a visualize design. The character would do almost nothing (The Persian is a great example, as well as Chernabog from Fantasia). You could even have people who like a character who literally only exists in a single still-picture. This might sound outrageous to many of the people from the above categories, but someone might look at such design that is just so pleasing to them, that they like everything about the character, and "character" to them is just as meaningful, but so drastically different.

This idea was pushed on me in the Gauntlet discord chat, by a number of people during the course of the last contest. If you ask them, and I'm sure they'll speak up

I know this wasn't directed at me, but I just want to say that I apologize if my suggestions were laid too heavily on you alone. It seems a lot of people discuss this stuff off board, so I'm not privy to the inter-workings. From my perspective, I mostly saw you mentioning it, so it seemed like you were wanting it out because it was against your agenda (which is fine, as you are host). Hope me voicing an opinion didn't come off as attacking you though, because that was never my intention anyway.

I'm assuming, even if the species is banned, you could nominated a specific one that shows up in an anime. With unnamed characters like Doggy from Room, and Bear in Tutu from Goofy, I imagine you could probably nominate things like "Beedrill from (insert specific forest that he showed up in an episode)"

It comes off as kind of sore sport to ban Pokemon after it seemed to mostly be you complaining about them taking up spaces near the finals in place of your favorites. Especially, when no action was taken on the cross-contest trading in Disney with the Pooh situation. But from what I understand, this contest is yours, and the Disney is a community one that just passes between different hosts every year, so I can respect any choice you make here.

Another sales tip, and this might be bordering more on making this a business, rather than a side job, is to seek out people who are selling massive collections of whatever collectible you are focusing on. Often times, you will find people who collected it for years, and for some reason, they are done, and while they probably know the value of what they have, they want it all gone, whether for quick cash, or just not wanting to fool with individual sales. You can get much better deals by buying full collections many times, if you don't mind selling everything individually, and as long as you have the funds for huge buys.

Both of those are options in most markets, as long as you know what kinds of things hold long term value. It's slow though, so it's more of an investment, rather than a side job, much in the way of stock.

In terms of making this thing a side job, it has more to do with knowing what markets and products in those markets can be quick and easy sells. Such as things that are new, but might have limited production runs, where you can buy up many of them, and sell them when people are unable to get the product. This is risky if you don't know the reliability of the market or the company though.

So do people who change into stronger forms during a boss battle count? People like Ganondorf from Zelda, Mother Brain from Metroid, Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat, Sans from Undertale, etc? Or is it limited to people who change shape in story driven media where them changing shape affects the plot because a character was deceived.
