MetalmindStats 09/28/19 6:30:11 PM #1 | Welcome to the tenth set of matches of the Board 8's Top 100 Video Game Characters bracket contest! If you haven't already, please read The Rules (somewhat of a long list, mostly to explicitly lay out commonsense points): - You may only vote once (for one character) per match. Do not use alts to circumvent this rule, unless you would like your votes to stop counting for the rest of this contest. - Please do not edit or delete your posts, or post score updates for matches that are still running. - Days will last for exactly 24 hours each - no more and no less, not even by a second. Votes posted outside of this limit will not count. - If any matches are tied at the conclusion of those 24 hours, they will be reran in the topic 24 hours after their conclusion and 24 hours thereafter continually until a winner is determined, unless it is absolutely necessary to rerun them earlier. - Only topics created by either MetalmindStats (using the eponymous account or his Rolycoly mobile account if absolutely necessary) or MZero11 are valid for this contest. As co-hosts, neither of us will be voting in matches. - Also, we reserve the right to add or change rules as necessary. Topic | How would they do in a contest? Day 120 ft BJ Blazkowicz, Maya Fey, Kerrigan |
MetalmindStats 09/28/19 5:26:31 PM #15 | ...Just how strong do you think Luigi is? For several contests now, we've had a pretty reliable peg on him, right around 32% on Base Link. Using the magic of X-Stats, Edgeworth's raw value based on his Luigi match is 14.4192%, indeed not far above the boundary between Low and Mid Fodder. Also, Ace Attorney fans will certainly rally behind her, but they did the same thing with Godot, and no one else cared. Maya will fare a bit better for sure, but I'm skeptical that there's much of a difference in terms of non-fan support for anyone except Phoenix. --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do." MetalmindStats 09/28/19 4:04:36 AM #13 | Ok, I'll accept that I was wrong about the importance part. However, that's still not quite enough to sway my overall vote. Keep in mind that, in addition to the 2010 and 2013 matches I mentioned, Edgeworth's raw 2018 result against Luigi puts him not far above the border between Low and Mid Fodder. In other words, in order for Edgeworth (let alone the less popular Maya) to be High Fodder, he has to both have suffered substantial SFF from Luigi, who only marginally SFF'd Meta Knight back in 2010, and improved significantly from the early 2010s to now, even as Phoenix's strength has stayed about the same in that time. BlueCrystalTear posted... With Kerrigan, people do still care about the original StarCraft. That's why I said Mid. Also, I don't get the sense any more than a very small minority of GameFAQs users still care about the original StarCraft, but I suppose there's not much hard evidence to back up either of our assertions. --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do." Topic | How would they do in a contest? Day 120 ft BJ Blazkowicz, Maya Fey, Kerrigan |
MetalmindStats 09/27/19 10:35:00 PM #7 | BlueCrystalTear posted... Not true. She appears as Phoenix's assistant in every case he heads. Case 2 in each of the three games is dedicated to her in some shape or form. She gets a crap ton of development in the other cases, too. For the record, what I meant by "tertiary" is that Phoenix is the primary character, Edgeworth is secondary, while everyone else is noticeably less significant. At any rate, I don't think this all matters enough to change my vote. Is Maya actually as important in the series as Edgeworth, who unlike Maya, has had at least one game devoted to him? Is she really as beloved as Edgeworth? Juxtaposing their nomination history, not to mention the results of tazzy's project, suggests the answer to the latter is no. --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do." MetalmindStats 09/27/19 10:16:47 PM #5 | greengravy294 posted... Wasnt BJ already in in rivalry rumble (with Adolf) Pretty much any character who wasn't in CBX and has appeared in a video game is fair game for this series. B.J. Blazkowicz: Low Fodder - I can't believe that any great amount of voters would opt for him just because he's been the protagonist of recent games other sites have liked. Maya Fey: Low Fodder - She's very much a tertiary Ace Attorney character as I understand it, more along the lines of Godot (who looked like Low Fodder in CBX) than Edgeworth. You can sort of excuse the latter's result against Luigi by calling SFF, but there's no excusing getting tripled by even a Near-Elite Big Boss or practically getting doubled by Morrigan Aensland (in 2013). Similar to Axem's vote on Vyse, I could maybe see Maya being Mid Fodder, but Andy already overloaded the BELIEVE here. Sarah Kerrigan: Low Fodder - See Arthas, except at least a few people still like/care about him these days. She's never been worth much, and she ought to be worth even less nowadays, when looking at similar characters' trajectories. --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do." MetalmindStats 09/27/19 6:47:46 PM #25 | Underleveled posted... SFF Would Chrom really be the type of character who would get SFF'd much here, though? I feel like our Fire Emblem fanbase is somewhat distinct from our Nintendo-at-large fanbase. Also, here's yesterday's results: - Spyro the Dragon > Nathan Drake, 14-8 - Shulk > Zidane Tribal, 12-8 - Kazuma Kiryu > Yuna, 14-9 - Yuri Lowell > Captain Falcon, 13-8 My thoughts: - All four percentage margins were rather similar, and yet only one of these four matches (Shulk v Zidane) went roughly as expected. - That first match in particular is rough, but Spyro has proven that he's a Board 8 powerhouse quite a few times before, so a close win wouldn't have been too surprising. It probably didn't help that I had to label Nathan Drake just 'Drake' in yesterday's match title. - Two consecutive FFX characters have now been on the bad end of upsets in matches they (probably) shouldn't have had any business losing. - I figured Yuri v Falcon would be a very close match despite the seeding disparity, in part because people seem to have soured somewhat on Vesperia. MetalmindStats 09/26/19 7:33:36 PM #22 | Yesterday's results: - Bowser > Chrom, 23-3 - Zelda > James Sunderland, 15-8 - Dante > Ganondorf, 13-12 - Gundham Tanaka > Lara Croft, 13-9 My thoughts: - Most importantly, votals were significantly stronger yesterday than the past six days. - Bowser's clearly in it to win it, with the biggest blowout of this contest to date against a character who (despite his seed) shouldn't be among the weakest in this field. - Sunderland's fans turned out early; he was tied with Zelda through the first six votes, but ultimately, avoiding the doubling is about as much as he could have expected in this format, with this level of turnout. - Dante was smoking Ganondorf early, but the latter came back and almost made it a really good day for the Zelda series. I choose to chalk this up more to Ganondorf not being an ordinary low seed than to Dante being a fruitcake, though. - Gundham beat Lara in a match that looks decent for both sides. Can he actually contend closely with Dante next round? Topic | How would they do in a contest? Day 118 ft Michael Myers, Ellen Ripley, T-800 |
MetalmindStats 09/26/19 7:04:53 PM #6 | I agree completely with Axem's Low Fodder vote and reasoning for Michael Myers. The recent movie (which wasn't even all that well received even though it cleaned up at the box office) isn't going to help enough on GameFAQs of all sites. I'm just not feeling what everyone else is on T-800. I voted High Fodder for Optimus Prime, who has the one-two punch of an animated series with prominent reruns in GameFAQs's ideal early/mid 90s nostalgia zone and greater pop cultural prominence in general. By comparison, all T-800 has is two well-liked (not quite beloved) movies, one of which, for an R-rated movie, is too old to hit the nostalgia zone here, and the other of which is also R-rated, so the average 30-35 year old GameFAQs user is unlikely to be overly nostalgic for it. As such, I favor Mid Fodder for him. As for Ellen Ripley, take T-800, sub in even older movies, subtract truly iconic character design and any shred of modern relevance, and you get Low Fodder. In general, I highly question whether most GameFAQs users would be inclined to vote for a movie character on a video gaming website just because they happen to like the movie in question, and that goes double for characters without highly iconic designs or relevant video gaming legacies. Nominations: Chase McCain (LEGO City Undercover) Green Biker Dude (Mega Man X) Lakitu (Mario) Kylo Ren Max Rockatansky Mr. Incredible Rawk Hawk (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door) Rocky Balboa Slimer Whispy Woods (Kirby's Dream Land) --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do." As for Abominable, industry tracking is calling for $17-21 million, and Box Office Pro is corroborating the high end of that range. However, families have hardly been served for the past month plus, and DreamWorks has a solid history of overindexing in such a position, so I opted to bump my prediction a few million ahead. --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do." I agree with Axem's basic logic that as Fallout goes, series symbol Vault Boy will inevitably go, and the series' reputation is currently at an all-time low. High Fodder, barely, for Elizabeth. BioShock Infinite's reputation has also plunged since 2013, as evidenced (to name just one way) by her failure to make CBX after a 3-seed in 2013, but I'm counting on TJF to just barely keep her decline to one tier. Mid Fodder for Vyse. His 2013 match was a nightmare scenario where Adol sucked up the dedicated RPG fan votes, while Ammy appealed to everyone else. It also doesn't make sense that such a universally beloved protagonist should be so much weaker than his game. At the same time, there's only so much I can ignore his universally lacking results/representation with far fewer excuses for it than Banjo, so I'm erring towards the high end of Mid Fodder. --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do." Topic | [B8VGC] Day 6: Garrus/Shantae, Sully/Celes, Link/Naoto, Kyle/Johnny, Magus/Blue |
MetalmindStats 09/24/19 6:30:38 PM #1 | Welcome to the sixth set of matches of the Board 8's Top 100 Video Game Characters bracket contest! May it be a smooth and fun contest for everyone involved! Keep in mind that I will not be posting or referencing any match results in match topics, and also that you can always find these topics by searching: B8VGC. Topic | Board 8's Top 100 Video Game Characters: The Bracket + Results & Discussion |
MetalmindStats 09/23/19 7:22:49 PM #17 | In our latest batch of results, Tidus swam past Mega Man X 14-9, Magus and Pokemon Trainer Blue tied 12-12, Squirtle put out Mario's fire 13-11, Missile reigned over The King of All Cosmos 14-8, and Hat Kid prevailed 12-11 in her tiebreaker match against Rikku. My thoughts: - A solid result for Tidus, considering that he's one of the characters bound to suffer most from this format, and that MMX is not your ordinary near-bottom seed. However, his path doesn't get any easier from here. - Once upon a time, Magus was perhaps Board 8's favorite video game character. However, after Crono went down in flames, this is about as expected against tough opposition. - Squirtle's huge upset wasn't exactly predicted by Charizard tanking and DK excelling. Meanwhile, Missile winning isn't overly surprising in and of itself, but to prevail by such a margin against a fellow B8 favorite seems like a sign of good things to come. Both of these results pain me. - Whoa there, Hat Kid! I think everyone can agree that expecting her to win would have been wishful thinking at best. Topic | How would they do in a contest? Day 115 ft Winnie the Pooh, Missile, Chair |
MetalmindStats 09/23/19 6:00:14 PM #7 | ...Let's make sure I don't forget today's slate, like I did yesterday. I agree with Axem about all three. Pooh lines up with my votes on similar characters, the Chair is a very obvious joke, and Missile looked not-awful in 2013. --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do."
