MetalmindStats 10/21/19 6:54:55 PM #73 | Edgeworth, Bowser, and Luigi also seem surprisingly low to me, and the entire 7-8 group is higher than I would have expected. Yesterday's results: - Sonic the Hedgehog > Samus Aran, 17-11 - Maya Fey > Sephiroth, 17-12 These margins are plenty interesting in their own right: Sonic had maybe the best match of his life, in any GameFAQs setting, but will he be able to stand up to a high-tier Ace Attorney character the way Knuckles thoroughly wasn't? On the other side, Sephiroth lost by exactly the same margin as Travis Touchdown two rounds ago: not terribly surprising, but it makes me wonder if Travis had actual strength or if low-vote wonkiness is responsible. However, there was something more surprising to make note of this time: the strong correlation between votes for each winner / votes for each loser. Specifically, 12/17 Sonic voters also opted for Maya, while 7/11 Samus voters also opted for Sephiroth. At certain points in each match, their blocs looked even more monolithic. MetalmindStats 10/21/19 6:31:46 PM #1 | We've finally reached Round 4, so in the absence of tiebreakers like today, there will be one match per day from here on out! If you haven't already, please read The Rules (somewhat of a long list, mostly to explicitly lay out commonsense points): - You may only vote once (for one character) per match. Do not use alts to circumvent this rule, unless you would like your votes to stop counting for the rest of this contest. - Please do not edit or delete your posts, or post score updates for matches that are still running. - Days will last for exactly 24 hours each - no more and no less, not even by a second. Votes posted outside of this limit will not count. - If any matches are tied at the conclusion of those 24 hours, they will be reran in the topic 24 hours after their conclusion and 24 hours thereafter continually until a winner is determined, unless it is absolutely necessary to rerun them earlier. - Only topics created by either MetalmindStats (using the eponymous account or his Rolycoly mobile account if absolutely necessary) or MZero11 are valid for this contest. As co-hosts, neither of us will be voting in matches. - Also, we reserve the right to add or change rules as necessary. MetalmindStats 10/20/19 6:47:36 PM #9 | For what it's worth, the likes of Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi aren't all that similar looking to Mario, and I doubt they get many votes on the basis of appearance resemblance, as such. Metal Mario's the most notable character who would get many votes due to his similarity to Mario, and I do not believe we have any precedent for a character bombing in spite of their strong design resemblance to a highly popular character, unlike the lesser Mario games. I will also nominate the Big Rig and Dr. Mario (Dr. Mario). --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do." You won the CBX Guru Contest, Advokaiser! Bully for you! |

Topic | How would they do in a contest? Day 141 ft Metal Mario, Lex Luthor, DQ11 Hero |
MetalmindStats 10/20/19 6:23:31 AM #4 | Metal Mario: Fodder Line - As far as lookalikes go, he seems to be more of a Linkle, where both characters' appeal is pretty much entirely from their resemblance, than a Dark Link, who is actually a memorable character in his own right. On top of that, Mario is substantially weaker than Link, and in general, GameFAQs has shifted away from voting for characters largely on the basis of design. Lex Luthor: High Fodder - I don't think his GameFAQs strength is all that close to Superman's, and my opinion of Superman's strength here isn't very high in the first place. As Superman's nemesis, though, he's still a high-profile comics character in a comic-book world, and should be able to beat Mid Fodder characters as such. Topic | How would they do in a contest? Day 140 ft Michael Corleone, Nightcrawler, Zelos |
MetalmindStats 10/19/19 7:36:26 AM #4 | Michael Corleone: Low Fodder - I have no confidence in pretty much any character from any 70s (or older) movie not called Star Wars to perform on a video gaming website, since I have no reason to believe GameFAQs truly cares about any other movie from that period no matter how legendary its reputation. Nightcrawler: Fodder Line - I could easily see him being lower, but I think him comfortably being the second most popular of the X-Men (or at least I've always gotten that impression) is just enough for the higher placement. Zelos Wilder: Low Fodder - Zelos should be a tier below Kratos, who sucked it up in 2013. Meanwhile, Lloyd getting thrashed by easily the weakest Ryu we've ever seen last year does not speak positively to any sort of rebound for ToS characters from the low level they've been at for quite a while. --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do." Topic | How would they do in a contest? Day 139 ft Captain Marvel, Mr. Freeze, The Hulk |
MetalmindStats 10/18/19 4:21:54 AM #3 | Captain Marvel: Agree with Mid Fodder. I think a wide swath of GameFAQs hasn't taken too kindly to her, not helped by a solo movie that most people don't like that much. Mr. Freeze: I favor High Fodder for him, mainly because I can't see him being stronger than Catwoman. To be fair, though, we did place her at least one tier too low, and I do think he'll have some strength for the reasons half_silver mentioned. The Hulk: Agree with Low Midcarder. Before the MCU, he would have been the strongest of the Marvel characters traditionally associated with the Avengers. He'll still have strength, but his MCU roles haven't been prominent enough to see the boon other characters have garnered from it. Topic | How would they do in a contest? Day 138 ft Tyler Durden, Son Gohan, Slimer |
MetalmindStats 10/17/19 4:36:24 AM #4 | Tyler Durden: Low Fodder - I can't see the people who have merely watched and liked Fight Club before caring, which leaves its dedicated fanbase, and that's not enough to get him any higher. Son Gohan: Fodder Line - He could be the third most popular Dragon Ball character only behind Goku and Vegeta, and he has a great shot at looking very similar to Goku in his match picture. Slimer: LAW Fodder - As recognizable as he supposedly is, he has never had any sort of role or appearance that would convince anyone who doesn't fondly remember 80s TV shows to vote for him against any opponent they like at all or even faintly recognize. Both the aforementioned shows and the movie itself are too old to fit into GameFAQs's ideal early 90s nostalgia zone, so he isn't going to get any help there. Even on the point of recognizability, I can only speak anecdotally to my experience of thinking he was one-and-the-same as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man (and the original movie's genuinely recognizable poster ghost, for that matter) at the time I nominated him. I have since watched Ghostbusters (and its sequel), but I wouldn't say that speaks positively of whether anyone who hasn't seen the movie(s) or TV show(s) recently will be able to recognize him. Nominations: Balrog Dhalsim E. Honda Felyne (Monster Hunter series) Frank West Monster Hunter (Monster Hunter series/Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite) Rathalos (Monster Hunter series) R. Topic | How would they do in a contest? Day 137 ft Prince Sidon, John Wick, Loki |
MetalmindStats 10/16/19 4:27:14 AM #4 | Sidon: Fodder Line - I question whether voters who have played and liked BOTW but aren't properly part of its fanbase would care about a not-overly-prominent NPC, and I doubt the memes have reached far outside the fanbase considering I hadn't even seen or heard of him 48 hours ago. Additionally, I almost certainly overrated Urbosa, based on the very same points I brought up yesterday. Loki: High Fodder John Wick: Mid Fodder - I'm already giving him a lot of credit by saying he won't be worthless as a recently-introduced movie character on GameFAQs, without significant gaming roles. That's no more than he deserves, however, considering his combination of name/design value (character and actor alike) and movies that young male internet users care about. Keep in mind that we will not be posting or referencing any match results in match topics, and also that you can always find these topics by searching: B8VGC. Topic | How would they do in a contest? Day 136 ft Sigma, Donkey Kong Jr, Urbosa |
MetalmindStats 10/15/19 4:14:00 AM #6 | I agree with High Fodder for Sigma; the MMX series nostalgia is still there, as evidenced by recent results by the character and game alike, but I don't feel like Sigma is nearly as iconic or well-liked as Dr. Wily. For Donkey Kong Jr., my vote is Mid Fodder, partly on the basis that it's almost impossible to mistake him for DK and partly because I'm of the opinion that the DKC series is mostly responsible for DK's recent resurgence. I favor Fodder Line for Urbosa, because, as Shonen pointed out, 5-10 minutes of screentime is not a recipe for a strong character no matter how beloved their game is. If anything, that might actually be a bit high, considering our votes on Ocarina of Time characters with equal or greater screentime, as well as Midna's consistent Fodder Line strength despite being a much more prominent character from a comparably strong Zelda game. As for Linkle, there's a big difference between 'recent supporting Zelda character' and 'recent supporting Zelda character who happens to be the female version of by far the strongest character on GameFAQs'. It's also unhealthy to lack a reasonable fear of The LAW :p I will also nominate the following characters: BlueCrystalTear posted... MetalmindStats 10/14/19 7:26:59 PM #66 | Paratroopa1 posted... and unlike Pokemon Go, TPP gave us like a bunch of memes and cultural touchstones, whereas Go has just not done that Maybe I'm just missing something here, but I don't feel like TPP ever made the transition from internet phenomenon to genuine real-life cultural phenomenon, unlike Go. The audience for the former at least seemed much more limited than the latter, which truly hit all walks of society. --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do." MetalmindStats 10/14/19 6:38:47 PM #61 | Yesterday's results: - Phoenix Wright > Knuckles the Echidna, 21-5 - Donkey Kong > Rise Kujikawa, 12-11 Phoenix demolished Knuckles even harder than Jill the previous round, even though Knuckles should be stronger than Jill. Considering Knuckles is somewhat of a B8 favorite himself, SFF makes as much sense as any other explanation. Meanwhile, DK has finished pulling off a great run of upsets, especially considering that proper Mario characters have faltered this contest. Topic | Box Office Topic II |
MetalmindStats 10/14/19 6:24:06 PM #43 | Joker was apparently jealous that foreign-language movies stole the spotlight last weekend, so it held incredibly well pretty much worldwide to ensure that wouldn't happen again. Its mere 42% North American second weekend decline is already incredible for a comic book movie; to compare: Far From Home sunk 51% against lesser competition, despite burning off OW demand by opening 3 days in advance of its original weekend. However, the real news was internationally, with a staggering $125.3 million second frame, for an eye-popping 18% decline (or 29% in holdovers, filtering out huge openings in France, Germany, and a few more minor territories). Its worldwide total is already at over $500 million after just 12 days. Joker is clearly not playing like an ordinary comic-book movie, which begs the question: will $1 billion+ worldwide happen? Far From Home had reached $578 million by the end of its second weekend, en route to $1.132 billion in total. If Joker holds equally well from here, it will close with $1.074 billion - even though Far From Home staggered its schedule much more than Joker, the latter's incredible word of mouth (in the Inception sense, it should be said) makes it look very possible. Personally, I'm taking the over on the $1 billion milestone. In other news, The Addams Family clicked with a $30.3 million opening, proving that UAR can actually effectively market a movie. Gemini Man, on the other hand, looks like a big loss in the making unless it blows up in China this next weekend, where it will have to contend with Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Overall, it was a very strong weekend for the box office; domestically, we're running a mere $5 million behind 2018's record October to date, a gap that could completely close tomorrow due to holidays this year. --- "I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do." MetalmindStats 10/14/19 6:01:16 PM #9 | Agree with Axem about all three. I will say, though, that LAW Fodder shouldn't be a serious consideration for Shion, due to her series' high playrate on JRPGFAQs and because KOS-MOS is High Fodder even without TJF, as seen in CBX. MetalmindStats 10/14/19 4:06:55 AM #60 | Yesterday's results: - Samus Aran > Meta Knight, 14-9 - Sonic the Hedgehog > Godot, 13-11 - Maya Fey > Lloyd Irving, 14-7 - Sephiroth > Futaba Sakura, 12-9 Matt Engarde was in an impossible position from the word go. With that lone exception, Ace Attorney characters were 3-0 in reaching the third round and not looking poised to stop their domination. Turns out Sonic is the hero we needed to show that the big 5 Ace Attorney entrants aren't invincible, as his series' strong contest continues. In other news: Meta Knight held the lead at multiple points in his match with Samus; the two were tied through 18 votes and looking to go down to the wire, until the last 5 votes all went one way. Additionally, Lloyd managed to look weaker than Travis to conclude a poor contest for Tales, while Sephiroth scored a big-ticket win in an attempt to defy his series' general trend this contest.
