Some simple rages I like to get for Gau early in the game are:

Guard - comes with an attack called Critical, which is just a strong physical attack.

Scorpion - comes with an attack called Tail, which is just a strong physical attack. I just like having this or Guard for the physical attack.

Ghost - comes with a chance of using Thundara (Bolt2) on enemies, which is quite strong at this point in the game.

Also, when you perform a rage, you also gain the statuses of that enemy. So with Ghost, Gau also has the float status on him and he gains health from poison... but hes undead, so curing him will also hurt him. So you just need to be mindful of certain conditions that come with the rage. You honestly dont need a ton of them, but it can be fun to experiment with.

Ok. Yeah, 1 is the best way to go usually, since its an instant attack that does good damage. Just sucks that you cant pick your target if there are multiple enemies. The only time I really use 2 is that very first fight with Cyan, when hes defending the castle on his own and chases away the enemy. Hes guaranteed a counter attack. I think 3 probably has some good uses, but Ive always avoided it.

didn't play much today, and made very, very little progress. close to zero. well, that's not exactly true but it kinda is. after fighting a few random battles in this area Shadow decided to leave my party! well, he wasn't kidding about leaving at any time. he basically left before we even got EXP or money.

after this, Sabin and Cyan went up to the waterfall area alone.

So anyone who has played the game before might find these two items back to back kinda funny. Shadow will leave your party at random, but if you make it to the waterfall quickly enough, he will stay with you until you get to the waterfall. At that point, while Sabin & Cyan are talking about jumping off, Shadow tells them that this is where their time together ends, and they thank him for their help. So it sounds like he left your party like a minute before he otherwise would have left.

MariaTaylor posted...
either way, I fight my way back to the waterfall entrance and then save my game. I'll worry about rhizopas next time, maybe after getting some advice. I plan to move Sabin into the back row and have him just use Blitz commands. does the same work for Cyan's Bushido?

Yep, back row attacks with Bushido dont get weakened. Which Bushido attacks are you using with him?

When applying online, your name and rsum is just some letters on a piece of paper or a screen. And it looks a lot like the dozens/hundreds of other applications the recruiters are seeing.

When you meet someone in person, you add a face and a personality to go with the rsum. You can leave much more of a lasting impression. On top of that, you can get a better idea if a position is as appealing or not as you mightve thought just from reading about it.

okay these routes are shorter than I was expecting based on the conversation in here earlier and I guess my expectations of other games with "routes."

Id say that Edgar/Terra/Bannon is even shorter than the Locke/Celes route, but the Sabin route it probably at least twice as long as the other two routes combined. Possibly three times as long.

Something you might not have noticed since the game doesnt exactly draw attention to it during the tutorial, but when Celes successfully does runic and absorbs a magic spell, she also gains the MP equal to the cost of that spell. Also, as was mentioned earlier, she absorbs whatever the next magical spell is, friend of foe. So be careful with your timing. Otherwise, you might cast cure or life and shell absorb it (while also gaining the MP, of course).

Yeah, was gonna bring this up if it was an Im outta options and have no clue how to win situation, but since you won on your own, even better.

If Bannon was getting killed in one hit, you probably have him in your front row. So do you know how to change the order of your party? If not, I believe on the menu screen, you just press to the left. From there, you can reorder your party. Additionally, if you double click a party member, it moves them between the front and back row. Characters in the back row take half the damage, but also dish out half the damage. Some weapons/attacks ignore the back row setup and still deal full damage, such as magic attacks.

If you already knew all that... then, uhh... carry on. <_<

Its my least favorite FF, even more so than FF2. Here are a few of my reasons:

The draw system. Earlier in the game, the main way you acquire your magic is by drawing it from enemies. You take a turn to draw, and youll pull anywhere from 1-10 or so magic stocks. Its a very cumbersome way of going about it, especially considering that the junction system makes it so linking magic spells to your stats is the primary way to build your character. (And yes, Im aware that the more efficient way of getting magic is through cards, but I still just really dont like the drawing system in general.)

The plot just gets really bizarre, and the writing feels lazy to me. It took me 3-4 attempts to finally beat the game, and the only reason I finally beat it was I was doing a marathon of beating FF1-10, and needed to beat 8 to proceed. I think the whole first disc is actually quite good, but it gets a bit weaker in disc 2, and near the start of disc 3, I feel it just falls apart. Every single one of my unsuccessful attempts to beat the game came around the exact same spot. Id just lose interest.

One plot point in particular that even fans of the game tend to admit is a weak point: the whole GFs made us lose our memories and none of us remember growing up with each other at an orphanage plot point. Not a fan.

Triple Triad just isnt my thing. Im in the overwhelming minority on this one. Most people absolutely love the game. It just didnt click with me.

I didnt care for the characters. This is a big one for me. I love the characters in FF4, 6, 7, 9, and to a lesser extent, 10. The only ones I dont particularly dislike are Selphie, Laguna, Ward & Kiros.

Flying the garden around is sooooo slow. No a fan of it when you take control.

Just wasnt a fan of earning a salary instead of earning gil through traditional means. Same with building weapons as opposed to finding/stealing/buying them.

Thats most of it. Theyre just my opinions - if anyone likes any of the things that I dislike, thats absolutely fine. The game does have its positives, such as most of the music (all very good IMO, except for the garden theme and the overworld theme), the graphics were very good for when it was released, and as I mentioned, I think the game is actually pretty good through the first disc.

Also, I wouldnt rate it anywhere near any worst game of all time kinda list. I just think its a weak entry to the FF series, which is my favorite series of all time. I just feel it comes up short with the bar that the series established.
