I agree that Link is probably the worst example of what a "best character" should be. People say they vote for characters who are from their favorite series, which is lame because GameFAQs already has competitions for that.

I don't agree with arbitrary limits though. New characters only would be equally lame, and what constitutes a new character?

For example, let's look at the Mario series with the smash-hit installment in the 3D Super Mario games, Super Mario Odyssey. A breakout star from that game was Mayor Pauline. Obviously Pauline is not new to the video-game world, she was the OG Mario girl, and appeared in a variety of Mario v. Donkey Kong games since then. The thing is, it wasn't until last year that she finally got the spotlight and her character is practically brand new.

pc+nintendo console+sony console is the way to go

PC's are much more expensive than a console to get the same performance, which for many of us, is not a priority.

Plus, the console UI is generally more friendly for the gaming environment. It is its own ecosystem.
