John has different handwriting/sketches/entries compared to Arthur. Yet, when you log locations and animals that are only accessible in New Austin, everything is recorded in the log with Arthurs more detailed sketches/notes and his handwriting. Not only that, but there are side quests you simply cannot complete as Arthur because you need access to New Austin to finish them. So far people have found that if you use the exploit and finish the dinosaur bone quest as Arthur, you get a fully mocapped/voiced ending cutscene featuring Arthur.
