Automata's OST is so good that I spent like 30 minutes switching between multiple songs before settling on that one for this topic.

Oh, definitely an amazing soundtrack. I'm not entirely sure where I'd place it, as I don't usually rank soundtracks... like I know Undertale & Chrono Cross are my top two (probably CC > Undertale, if I truly had to pick), but Automata might actually be third? There are other games with individual songs I like more, but every song on Automata was great which would make it pretty hard to beat.

Song name - The Weight of the World
Song origin - NieR: Automata OST
Song link

Nominator: Murphiroth (7/15)

I wish this had been the Japanese version of the song. Not that there's anything wrong with the English version, but I know it too well. The final song from my favorite game of last year*? Yes, I'm quite aware of it. One of the greatest games of all time with a stellar soundtrack.

Which makes this version of the song the exact opposite of new. I still like it, which is how it managed to survive being cut at the block of songs I knew too well, but... well the more I liked a song before starting this topic, the harder it was for it to get a high score, and this is exactly as far as I want to take it.

*Second favorite was Pyre ; third favorite was "Make a Good Mega Man Level 2", an unbelievably massive Mega Man fangame that is too complicated to go into here.

[FINAL NOTES: Seriously, just go download MaGMML 2. Best Mega Man game ever.

....not that I suspect any of you will actually enjoy it, but it's free, so I see no harm in suggesting it.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: Alright, alright, the short version: Anyone and everyone was able to submit a stage for MaGMML 2. They were ranked by a panel of judges on a variety of criteria and ranked, but there was very little attempt at quality control. Some stages are broken messes filled with glitches ; some are created by professional game designers. The game features a mixture of the absolute best & worst Mega Man can ever be, and you never know what's waiting for you within each stage.

There's a ridiculously massive number of levels, a surprisingly long post game, hidden collectibles that unlock some interesting things, and a hub world filled with references to everything Mega Man related. It's basically the ultimate tribute to the Blue Bomber and the fanbase and it's unironically one of my favorite games of last year--possibly of all time, which speaks to just how amazing Automata and Pyre were.]

It's good, but too long. There are long songs I enjoy and I know 8 minutes isn't that long, but I don't think it does anything to justify the length. Which is unfortunate, because it comes really close to being in the top 30... but like LCC, I think the length just hurts it too much.

[FINAL NOTES: Another song that got hurt by repeated listens. This fell 22 spaces since the last version of the ranking.]

For the record, without going into the specifics too much, the story of the song is that the protagonist is having an opium-induced hallucination of his younger self and essentially apologizing that he's made so many mistakes in his life and doesn't see a way out of them. It's a really powerful moment because this character has been insufferably (and undeservedly) arrogant throughout the entire story and he's finally been driven to an absolute low point where he's forced to acknowledge what a disaster he's created.

It does all sound interesting and, as I said, I'm not opposed to hearing the rest of the story... there's just an awful lot of it, so it's a bit intimidating to look at.

Short-Haired Tornado isn't even close to my favorite FtM song (that'd easily go to Greener Grass, which I didn't nominate because I was limiting myself to one super long offering)

Oooh, haven't listened to it yet, but skimming the lyrics that one looks like it has some potential... will have to try listening to it either later tonight or tomorrow.

I've actually heard of this guy before, thanks to Spotify. I was listening to the Undertale OST on a regular basis, so it started trying to make me listen to Smooth McGroove's acapella versions & DM DOKURO's remixed versions. Which reminds me, I haven't listened to "Reality Check Through The Skull" in a while.

*proceeds to listen to said song instead of the one she's supposed to be ranking*

*and from there onto some random remixes of Chrono Trigger's Black Omen*

Ahh, that's what I wanted. Mayhaps I'll replay Chrono Trigger & Chrono Cross after this ranking. Probably not, too many new games--haven't even opened Dragon Quest XI yet.

Never played anything in the LittleBig series (or even Playstation All-Stars for that matter), so there's no nostalgia here. My encounters with McGroove's music are so recent that I can't even be nostalgic for his work. And I have no real experience with acapella music; I know the two themes composed by Rockapella (Gummi Bears & the Carmen Sandiego gameshow), but that's it.

Song is nice. Happy, upbeat, and simple. Kinda nice to relax with after some other songs on this list, but not super amazing.

Well, we've hit peak screaming here. No matter how many times I look at the lyrics while listening to this song, I don't think I've heard a single word. But it's interesting and experimental; the background music itself is happier than expected for this genre of music, and the lyrics would be nice if it were possible to hear them.

Well, nice probably isn't the adjective I'm looking for, with the references to alcoholism and the phrase "I'm dying", but I don't know what word I should be using instead.

...oh hey,I managed to hear the "I WANT TO DREAM!!!!!" this time. That's something, I guess. Either way for being unique and being a long song that I enjoy, it ranks surprisingly high on this list.

[FINAL NOTES: I finally heard more of the lyrics this time, though it didn't really help or hurt the song any.]

I did miss it, sorta; I still read each writeup, but havent listened to much since #1,212 ; there was a decent stretch of time I couldnt listen to much, so I fell way behindstill going to go back and listen to all the nominated songs at least, presumably around the time I start working my way through the rest of ZALIST.

That particular writeup didnt leave much of an impressions, as I hadnt heard of the song or the band, so it was already gone from my head by the time I heard it over here.

Nominator: azuarc (1/2)

A fair bit better than Abandoned Hope. I rather like...whatever happens starting at 1:19, that part has gotten stuck in my head quite a bit since I first listened to this song. Unfortunately, this list has a much higher quality of songs in the top 100 than expected, and I just don't see this song making it any further. I'm sorry.

FATALITY

In Memoriam

Lowest Ranked Song: Abandoned Hope (121st Place)
Highest Ranked Song: Exquisite (96th Place)

It's probably not a surprise to anyone else that the player with only two nominations is the first to be eliminated, but it was a surprise to me. I figured chiptunes were going to be my thing, especially considering how often in this ranking I've complained about the music not being digital enough... but neither of these two tracks clicked with me in the way I expected and hoped they would. Exquisite has gotten stuck in my head on quite a few occasions, but then, so have a lot of other songs.

So while I owe azuarc for the VGM contest and Reverse Ranking topics being the highlight of my time on Board 8, it is with a heavy heart that he is eliminated here.

[Best songs I discovered through said ranking topics, in no particular order: Transistor - The Spine, Silent Hill 3 -- Walk On Vanity Ruins, and Ace Combat Infinity - Blue Skies (Infinity Remix).]

It's good, but it goes on far longer than it needs to and I have no love for the Streets of Rage series. Actually, I have very little love for the Genesis itself--the Sega CD, absolutely. Saturn, sure, I love the Saturn. Master System & Dreamcast, unconditional love. Genesis...no.

My thoughts on the Game Gear are...complicated. Never played a 32X.

Anyway, the point I was getting to was, if I like computerized sounds then taking a 16-bit song and turning it into piano music is the exact opposite of what I'd normally like ; but since I don't often care for the Genesis or its sound fonts, it actually works out here. I think this is an improvement over the original, as abnormal as that feels for me to admit.

[FINAL NOTES: Now I'm curious if there any non-Sonic Genesis games with soundtracks good enough to get past my bias against the system. One of the Phantasy Stars might have something...]

It's quite nice. Good voice, above-average lyrics, a bit of computer effects distorting her voice--not often enough for my tastes, but she does give me a neat echo effect near the end of the song--but it never really wows me. I enjoy the song, but it ends quickly and doesn't leave enough of a lasting impression.

[FINAL NOTES: I don't know why, but I can never remember anything about this song as soon as it ends. Whenever I hear it, I always feel "wow, that was a good song!" and then I can't recall any of it. It's quite odd.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: ...Though now, perhaps ironically, I'm confusing it with Flawless--the other song I could never clearly remember. This is the one with the video with her walking a lot of dogs, right? And yet, every time I try to remember this song, a different one pops into my head. Thus far, in no particular order:

Flawless
How Simple
Fake Happy
Nobody
Hunnybee
How Simple (for the third or fourth time)
Fault Line
...are we sure this song isn't How Simple because that's like the only thing coming to mind anymore?

....And after trying really, really hard to think of something I came up with: "Maybe it's that "Here I am again at the reserve to drink" song" for a minute before remembering, oh yeah, that's the outro to How Simple.

.....I feel like I should retroactively boost that song about 50 rankings higher, but that's still not helping me recall this one. I know it'd all come back to me if I had a note or a word or two from the chorus, but now I'm determined to remember at least a bit of the chorus without outside help. Especially since I actually do like this song.

*finally gives up and looks up the lyrics*

Yeah, I was never going to get that. Still a good song though!

AS tempting as it is to ramble about Kirby since the anime had the evil organization N.M.E. (or at least the dub did), I...don't actually care about Kirby. Super Star was great, but that's about it.

The song is infectiously catchy and kinda funny (worth some chuckles at least), but they forgot to explain what the girl in question actually did to deserve the hatred. There's some vague lines in the beginning about Unidentified Friend Guy being suffocated and manipulated, but without any specifics or evidence... it just feels like the singer is being an ass for the sake of being an ass.

No, seriously, if you anxiously dream about your friend getting married so that you can jump up and sing about what a bitch his fiance is in front of everyone, you're just an ass.

[FINAL NOTES: Not that I based my song placements on humor, but I'm not sure if it'd be stranger to have this song or the George Lam one be the introduction to the top 50%.]

I have so many questions:

Is this song sampling Material Girl? If so, why?

Is this video parodying a variety of movies or something? Because I really have no idea what I just watched.

...Why are Genghis Khan and Alibaba in this song?

Is the part starting at 3:35 inspired by and/or sampling "Whip It"? Because I swear that sounds really familiar before returning to what I still swear is Material Girl.

I have absolutely no clue what is happening, but I can't look away from it...

[FINAL NOTES: I will never understand what's going on with this song, but it is strangely addicting as a result. ...Also this is an interesting song to open the top half of the list on.]

Spock's Beard and 3, on the other hand, are pretty great.

...Fine, I'll just add all of them to the ZA'LIST, and worry about it after the ranking ends.

"Let's just throw everyone from Thank You Scientist's write-up: Spock's Beard, The Three Band, Snarky Puppy, Oi Va Voi" added to the final version of said list which will be posted whenever we get that far.

And our last two songs to just barely miss the 50% are...

====================================================

102:

Song Name: Hrafntinna
Song Origin: Sigur Rs
Song Link:

Nominator: kateee (6/13)

The song title and lyrics made me expect death metal, but this is...far, far quieter and emotional than expected. Bit of a lyrical dissonance thing, but I think I'd prefer a song that opens with the Apocalypse to be more intense than this.

Certainly nothing wrong with any aspect of the song; intruments, singers, lyrics, everything is quite good. I just feel the singers would either work better with more beautiful lyrics, or the Apocalyptic lyrics would work better with a more intense band.

[FINAL NOTES: Certainly one of the most unique songs on this list and I hate cutting it before the top half as a result... but again, I don't see any songs that I actively want to move down the list to make room for it.]

====================================================

====================================================

101:

Song Name: The Moon/Awake
Song Origin: The Dear Hunter
Song Link:

Nominator: NBIceman (13/15)

Oof... first time I'm even hearing of this band and we're starting at Act V. Yet another concept album song I won't be able to fully appreciate because I don't have time to listen and study to so many different albums.

On the plus side I do like the song and wouldn't exactly be opposed to listening to the other albums, but it feels like a massive undertaking to try following the plot at this point.

[FINAL NOTES: Song would likely do better without the Awake portion. That weird outro might be unique, but it's not doing the song any favors in terms of placement.

And so we officially reach the halfway point of the ranking! And while a lot of participants are on their last nomination, everyone managed to get at least one song in the top 50%!]

Ah. Well, I'll definitely try listening to a song or two by Snarky Puppy at some point then.

This song is a hybrid of The Mars Volta and Spock's Beard? Or perhaps a combination of "3 (The Three Band)", "Snarky Puppy", and "Oi Va Voi"?

it's funny that when you act like you've never heard any of these bands it's suddenly a list of bands i actually listen to (though not surprising because I like thank you scientist too)

Not an act, I hadn't heard of any of those... with the possible exception of Mars Volta because as I alluded to, every other band on this list gets compared to Mars Volta. Honestly can't recall which song was the first to get such a comparison though.

I want to believe this song was the first though; at the very least, it was typing the band's name in this writeup that caused me to be more aware whenever Mars Volta was mentioned again (though I didn't bother noting any other occurrences ).

Either way, that's some high praise for these groups... I may just throw all of them onto ZA'LIST later.

On the one hand, I don't think this works as well without the visuals and at least some knowledge of the anime shown. It's also a bit overly reliant on Outlaw Star footage.

On the other, it's one of the rare videos on this list to hit me with positive memories & nostalgia, and I can't downvote anything Gundam Wing related... even if it is just a two and a half second shot of Heero's face.

[FINAL NOTES: Seriously, list needs more Gundam.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: I didn't even mention the use of Jet's voice actor. Everything about this video is nostalgia cranked up to 11; the choice of voice, the choice of anime, the timeframe this commercial is from. I don't think any nomination on the list triggered as many positive memories as this one.]

Oh yeah and the Underoath vocalist is 100% better than Nicky from Nekrogoblikon. Vocals were the hardest sell for me with the Goblins but they're just so entertaining instrumentally that the goblin voice gimmick eventually grabbed me. Even his cleans aren't as good as a lot of other singers, but they're so dedicated to the gimmick that I'm ok with it.

Clean and a quite literal admission of the gimmick...

Everytime I see this song placed anywhere outside of the bottom 10%, I wonder how I could possibly have a song so repetitive above so many other songs that I highly enjoyed.

Then I play the song again, laugh at her little explosion noise, and wonder how I can possibly have the song so low. This song's placement could easily fluctuate 100 places depending on my mood.

Another interesting choice. Even if you wanted to avoid anything animated and were going to stick with 80s sitcoms, I would have expected Cheers (thank you for not nominating that one, by the way), Perfect Strangers, or Who's The Boss.

Or possibly even the end credits of WKRP In Cincinatti, which may or may not even be words. Legend has it that there are no true lyrics to the song, that the singer just sang random words or syllables as an example of how the song should probably sound, and they approved the nonsensical version as a commentary on how no one really understood rock music lyrics anyway.

No one knows if that's true, but everyone hears something different when they listen to it.

If you wanna have some fun, try finding a rerun and watching it with closed captioning. Sometimes people attempt to transcribe what they heard and you get...interesting results. Including, occasionally, people giving the exact opposite lyrics: I've seen a lot of subtitles say the singer is talking to a bartender about it being the best that he's ever had; but sometimes you can find lyrics in which the singer is leaving and didn't enjoy the drinks. Then there are the interpretations involving farting dogs and poodles with lids on their head, to say nothing of "whack-a-mole ditto, uh-huh!".

As for Night Court, I think I'm actually quite happy with this nomination. It's something I've heard a lot as I've seen most of the series, but I never actually thought about the theme before. It's pretty good, actually! And this list is rather lacking in saxophone music... but it's also quite short.

[FINAL NOTES: I'm running out of random sound-effects to make when I have nothing to add...umm..."Kuweeekeee!!"?]

It feels like the song ends at 3:10 when it fades out and has no new lyrics to offer, but the song picks back up and just keeps repeating "Do You See The Light???" over and over.... only for a minute, but it somehow feels much longer than that each time I listen to it.

Nominator: Seginustemple (4/10)

This song comes really close to greatness, but it takes too long to get started. I don't really care about the song until 3:17, with it not hitting greatness until close to the five minute mark. I'm sure people who know what they are talking about will go on about how you need the slow build-up because blah blah blah, but I don't really care; as amazing as the last part of the song is, you're asking me to endure an entire song's worth of build-up just to reach it.

Get to the good parts sooner and this is an easy top 10 song.

[FINAL NOTES: Hard song to place anywhere due to the variance in quality. Over the course over its over seven minute runtime, it goes from being not particularly good to one of the best. Ultimately, it fails to even break into the top 50% by just taking too long to reach the parts I want to hear.]

Somehow, this reminds me of a more energetic version of the Battlemorph soundtrack:

I'm sure that's just me, but there's just something there that I can't put into words. It's this sort of alien-esque environmental music that's both relaxing and unsettling at the same time. In a way, I wish you had nominated "I Am You", which doesn't invite any comparisons to anything.

...Not that I'm sure I like the latter song, as 11 minutes is just too much for what it is, but it's so totally unique that "Nothing" seems rather dull in comparison. If you're going to go with a psychadelic nomination, go all the way.

[FINAL NOTES: Parts of this vaguely remind me of two songs from Mega Man 8, particularly Aqua Man & Credits. Unfortunately I listen to those two songs on such a regular basis that there's not really room for this song, even if there are no actual similarities and it's all in my head.]

Is that a keytar at 2:53? Either way, the song makes it this far due to the instrumental section. I liked it, less enthusiastic about the singer (not that I dislike her)--a purely instrumental version would get a bit higher and the ranking would tank completely without the instrumental section.

[FINAL NOTES: Wow, I was really harsh on the singer for no apparent reason. I don't know what kind of mood I was in at the time I wrote that.]

I do enjoy this song, though I'm having trouble deciding exactly why. It's certainly not nostalgia for Detective Conan/Case Closed--its run on Adult Swim was far too short for me to have any real memories associated with it. I recall Bonus Stage having a somewhat amusing parody of Detective Conan in one episode, but trying to explain an early 2000s webtoon that I haven't seen in over a decade to an audience that has presumably never heard of it and doesn't care, is beyond my capabilities at the moment.

The name always makes me think of the completely unrelated Kelly Clarkson song, since I had that on an mp3 player for a while for...some reason, I don't really know. This song is considerably better.

It's really rare for me to actually understand a song on the first listen (or ever without looking up other people's thoughts, truthfully), but this song is strangely straightforward. It doesn't waste any time establishing that it's about cutting ties with someone because they're too self-destructive to associate with, gives enough examples on why the singer feels that way, then ends quietly. There's nothing to decipher or think about; it's all right there on the surface, sung by someone with a pleasing, easy to understand voice.

...I'm still not sure if I'm counting that as a point for or against the song.

I like chiptunes, hate cutting one this early, & it would make very nice background music while I was doing other things... but it's not something I'd go out of my way to listen to and it's not really getting stuck in my head or anything.

[FINAL NOTES: It's actually a coincidence that someone falls into the DANGER ZONE immediately after the last song, but here we are.

Anagram
DireKrow
BlackDra90n
azuarc

Will any of them fall or can they hold on until a fifth party joins them?]

Wikipedia is wrong on that. This one is the Mandela tribute:

Huh. Well remind me to listen to that one tomorrow then, that is a topic I'm highly interested in.

I want to like this more than I actually do. I did want to hear some more metal and I enjoy the lyrics--really, I'm a sucker for anything villainous or related to watching the world burn--but I don't think the deep throated growling type of singing works with the lyrics.

Take my hand and we'll watch the world burn

You need someone more charismatic and enchanting to speak the words. Someone that, while you know you're following them on the road to hell, their words are too sweet and enticing. Who the heck would choose to go with Screamo McGee here?

[FINAL NOTES: And our third competitor drops to the DANGER ZONE with only one song remaining! Anagram, DireKrow, and BlackDra90n... who will fall first?]

This one is particularly sad and ironic for me. The lyrics are about freedom and dreams and whatever, but the lead singer died in an accident just a few months after the song's release.

...oof, I probably should have done a bit more research on that song. Besides tragic irony, the fact that it was (according to Wikipedia) a tribute to Nelson Mandela would have helped it dramatically. Its too late to do anything now, but I do regret this placement now.

EDIT: With added context, I think I may have bumped (Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies) up to...69th place?

MORE EDITS: ...Eh, I don't have to be objective and the bias in its favor is overwhelming, and we're dealing with hypotheticals anyway. Let's say somewhere in the top 40, maybe top 30.

It's good, but it doesn't do enough to stand out as anything more than a good soft rock song. It feels like something that I would hear on the radio, pleasing but not very unique.

Another song that seems to just stop in the middle of a note. As I knew absolutely nothing about Hong Kong or its history, this song was basically impossible to decipher even with a translation of the lyrics...eventually I found a guide that explained the lines of the song in addition to offering a translation, which helped quite a bit.

Though before this explanation I don't think I'd even heard that Hong Kong was once a British colony, so there's only so much history an explanation of a pop song can cram into one page. Still, I am grateful for it.

[FINAL NOTES: Sploink.]

Song: Gamecube Startup Logo
Origin: Nintendo Gamecube
Link:

Nominator: Se7enthrust (4/10)

I never really cared about the Gamecube, so there's no nostalgia here. That probably helps its ranking, since if I did have a lot of nostalgia for it, it might have dropped back at the "block of songs I already liked" part of the list.

While it's only five seconds long, it's absolutely perfect for what it is. I can think of no better jingle to accompany the little startup animation, it's catchy, and it's unlike anything else on the list. That's enough to carry it further than I expected when I first saw the nomination.

And now to ramble about a different system startup, just because I want to:

It would have lost points for being something I already loved, but I was obsessed with the Sega CD BIOS when the system was new:

No idea why, but that song alone was enough to sell me on the system. I had to have a Sega CD, just so I could listen to this song. That was really stupid as the system had very few things worth playing, but I still enjoy the music. Someone actually converted the startup screen to a MUGEN stage and I still use it on a regular basis just for the song... though after over two decades of loving it, I'm not nearly as into it as I once was.

Not related to anything, but since I'm talking about Sega CDs, let's look at some hidden tracks that you could find by trying to play the games like music CDs. First, a message that scared me so much that I had trouble sleeping for days:

Of course, back then I had no idea what backmasking was, much less a way to reverse it to hear the hidden message. All I knew was that if you pushed the wrong buttons when turning that game on, someone would receive a call from hell as monstrous demons chant ominously. EVIL GAME! EVIL!!!!

And second, Sega's standard warning message, which is ridiculously awesome:

That distorted electric guitar... ohh, you have no idea how I wish this led into an entire song or even an entire album. Truthfully, I'm not sure what would have happened if you tried nominating Sega CD Warning--it's incredibly nostalgic and has A+++ instrumentation, but is incredibly short and not really a song, so I think I would have imploded.

...Perhaps we should be thankful you didn't nominate it then.

[FINAL NOTES: I think that covered everything I wanted to cover.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: Between the arguments for this song coming in last place and getting a very high placement, I think I may have inadvertantly placed this song in a spot that pleases no one. </.<]

1: The short, rapid drumming reminds me of a gun firing a three-shot burst. It feels wasted on this song; I keep waiting for it to turn incredibly dark and violent, but no one ever gets shot. It's...oddly stressful, even though I know it shouldn't be and that's just my own fault.

2: You really should have nominated the music video version of this song, which would have jumped the song into the top 30 at least.

A: Having a goofy, fun video helps take the edge off the drumming. Like, if they're cosplaying as Calvin and Hobbes without any guns around, it eases my mind enough to actually focus on the song.

B: I am the bad type of furry. Do you know how jealous I am that he both has a tiger outfit and is confident enough to pull it off?!

C: The additional guitar playing improves the song quite a bit over the album version. The album one feels like an unfinished demo in comparison ; not that some demos aren't better than the final product (the demo version of "Doctor My Eyes" would never have seen the success of the studio release, but I think it may be better), but...uhh...this one isn't?

...man forget top 30, listening to the video version again, it's definitely in the top 20. Unfortunately that's not the version I'm supposed to be ranking, so here we are.

[FINAL NOTES: I was so tempted to disqualify this version of the song and just replace it with the good one myself, but that would be cheating. This joins the Jeopardy Theme as being the wrong version of an otherwise high scoring song.]

Well, this brought back memories, but that's as specific as I'm willing to get.

[FINAL-ER NOTES: It's interesting that I associate this show with a very specific time and place. There were a lot of games and shows I played and watched around that time (Final Fantasy Adventure, Tiny Toon Adventures (NES), Battletoads, Dr. Wily's Revenge ; the Carmen Sandiego game show), but none trigger the flood of memories like this.

It's likely because I haven't seen this show since then. The games I've played at least a few times over the years (I never got anywhere in Dr. Wily's Revenge until around '07), I knew Carmen Sandiego from the Master System game before the show, so those aren't as associated with any one specific moment.

...of course, like that first song about suicide, the memories this stirs are not good ones; but... well, there is some value in music capable of triggering such strong flashbacks, even if they are things I don't wish to remember.]

Cats staring out the window, taking over the town
Hovering like vultures with frantic wings

That mixed metaphor bothers me. People that are like cats that are like vultures?

...if I believed for half a second that he meant literal cats taking over the town, this song would probably jump into the top 30. Bonus points if said cats were cosplaying as Marvel's Vulture at the time.

This is so far removed from the other nominated song by this band that I can barely believe they're from the same group. This certainly isn't a happy song, but... well in comparison to that other song...

[FINAL NOTES: The singer's voice gets a bit too high-pitched for my tastes in a few places. It knocks the song down several pegs.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: Everything about this song--from the intensity of the lyrics to the way they are sung--is heavily toned down from Ningen wo Kaburu. I didn't even notice it was the same band on my first trip through the nominations.]

One of the only two mashups on the list, though both songs are so radically different that they can scarecly be considered the same genre. I wasn't a fan of this at first, but it's definitely been moving further up my rankings with each listen. If I had any nostalgia for DDR or knew much about Fate/Stay Night (my only knowledge of the latter comes from lurking in Mercs and Strongest Character Tournament topics), it may have risen even further.

[FINAL NOTES: I originally had this pegged near the bottom of the list (possibly bottom 20?), but after liking it more with each listen, it made a pretty big jump up the list. It's probably the second most improved song--the song with the largest gap between initial placement and final ranking still hasn't come up.]

I'm always interested in your writeups, though I have no knowledge of musical terms so I rarely understand much. Like I don't think I've heard angular used to describe music before and I don't think I've ever heard the word quartal, in any context.

"Due to a publisher block, we are not authorized to display these lyrics."

It's cute that UMC thinks they can keep the lyrics off the internet, considering how many other sites you can find these lyrics at. And it's not like this is the first time I've run into similar messages, as different sites are blocked from different songs. It's just such completely irrelevant garbage; exactly what the heck does UMC hope to accomplish? I had to look at two websites to make sure I correctly understood the lyrics, that sure helped them make money! </sarcasm>

...that's not even an inconvenience. I always try to check two websites anyway, due to the problem of frequently misquoted lyrics and to see if anyone's providing information I should know in the comments sections. It accomplished nothing other than mild annoyance.

This isn't just greedy, but incompetent. Captain Planet villains would laugh at this. Verminous Skumm's plan to spread misinformation about HIV & AIDS to ruin a basketball playing Neil Patrick Harris' life may have been pointlessly evil, but you can kinda spin it into making sense... like if NPH life got so miserable that he ran away from home, perhaps he would have to live in the sewer with the mutant rats or something. Or maybe Skumm's trying to prove that he should be in charge of the Hate ring to summon Captain Pollution, by doing his best to embody the concept of Hate itself unlike that smug Dr. Blight. Or maybe the rat just really, really hates Neil Patrick Harris.

Either way, even Skumm would take one look at Universal Music Group North America's plan to censor one page of one website and laugh in their faces.

...

Yes, I did just connect a song about dysfunctional relationships to the Captain Planet AIDS episode. Just one of the many exciting things that may happen when you ask a deranged rabbit to comment on your song choices!

[FINAL NOTES: If it matters, that whole UMC tirade had no impact on the song's placement.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: I planned on saying that I regretted having this song so low, but looking at what's coming up, I... don't know that I'd take this over any of the songs dropping tomorrow, so this may actually be exactly where I want it to be.]
