Quick responses:

I've never heard of The Leftovers... not usually into dramas, but I may look into that when I get a chance.

I love DBZ, but I can't really be nostalgic for it, as like Viva la Vida it's never gone anywhere. I've still got seasons of Super to watch as the last episode I caught was the first tournament for the Super Dragon Balls that introduced Hit, I could pop in FighterZ if I want a current game, and I still occasionally replay Tenkaichi 3 when I need to do something stupid like kill everyone as Babidi.

Embarrassing to admit, but I didn't realize the same singer did all of those songs. It wouldn't have impacted anything, for better or worse.

Song Name: Futile Devices
Song Origin: Sufjan Stevens

Nominator: mcflubbin (7/15)

After clicking one of YouTube's suggested videos (always a risky move), I am unsure if I should thank you or curse you for not nominating "The predatory wasp of the Palisades is out to get us!" instead. My feelings about the song, the debate about the song, and my feelings about the debate are all incredibly complex. I suspect that song would have scored incredibly highly, though I don't think I would have been prepared to actually say anything about the song.

Comparatively, Futile Devices is significantly less intense and emotionally draining. That is not to dismiss the song; it really is quite great. It's also amusing how quick people are to assign any type of meaning they wish to it; beyond the typical arguments over if the song is straight or gay, there's the comedy option about it being from the perspective of a dog (which I don't believe, but I appreciate the attempt), and at least one person suspects robots.

...no matter how many times I listen to this song, I cannot hear anything about robots.

[FINAL NOTES: While this is my first time hearing Sufjan Stevens music, I remember reading about him in a Cracked article. His Illinoise album originally had Superman on the cover, but for legal reasons, they covered him up with a sticker of balloons, before being removed completely.

Amusingly, you can find all three versions of the cover on YouTube by searching for the predatory wasp song. The most viewed video uses the Superman artwork, the official upload uses the balloons, and the lyric video has a clear skyline.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: I hadn't added him to ZA'LIST at the time this was written, but I'm going to go back and edit him into the final version of it. I do want to give at least two more songs a chance and feel I ranked this one a bit too low... not sure how high up I wish I'd placed it, but higher than this at any rate.]

Song Name: The Rising Sun (Orchestral Version)

Nominator: IhatethisCPU (6/15)

And so we come to the second and last wrestling related nomination. A bold choice; between my hatred of current WWE & general dislike of orchestral music, this could have easily fallen into last place. Luckily, this is actually a good song and I have no complaints about Nakamura himself, so this gets a much higher ranking than I had anticipated.

I want to like WWE, but I just can't these days. I've been burned too many times:

I supported Zack Ryder from day one of his YouTube series, marking out whenever he was on screen for even a second. I knew he could never be the top star of the company, but he was funny and popular and surely could have worked in the midcard scene... but they decided to bury him and his show to punish the fans for cheering for him.

I loved The Miz and marked out so hard when he got to main event Wrestlemania...only for him to be an irrelevant afterthought. He somehow managed to main event the biggest show of the year -and- defeat the top star of the company -and- still get trashed in the process, as the only focus was on Cena and The Rock. Because it doesn't matter how awesome you are, you'll never be as good as washed up novelty acts from the Attitude Era. ((To be fair, Miz has fared much better than Ryder. He's still on TV, he has that Miz and Mrs. show, and what not. And I do try to pay attention when he's on screen, but that Wrestlemania still stings.))

I used to love Ziggler, but after that Survivor Series crap, I can't bring myself to care. For one brief shining moment, I thought his years of service to the company had paid off. He fought through all the dumbest gimmicks possible, putting on the best matches of the night, day in and day out, and finally was going to hit the big time. He survived a 3-on-1, saved the company from The Authority, and things were going amazing... only for him to drop off the face of the planet because LOL ONLY STING & TRIPLE H MATTER. Like Miz, it doesn't matter what you do, you will never compare to broken old men that can't wrestle anymore.

And then there's Reigns... always Reigns... over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, AND OVER, AND OVER, AND OVER AGAIN.

HATE.

...HATE>

.......HATE

NXT is good, I try to keep up with it (mostly in hopes of seeing Kairi Sane). Nakamura is good? I've never been blown away by him, but I've never regretted watching him perform. I'd probably care more about him if I had any reason to suspect having the support of fans meant anything on the main roster.

Song is quite good, I'd say I even like it better than the original version of his theme.

[FINAL NOTES: I still need to start watching Chikara at some point, but no one can ever agree on which season is best for a total newcomer to jump into...]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: Speaking of old men from the Attitude Era that can't wrestle, DX has reformed since I wrote that! Uggghhh... I want to cancel my subscription because of how horrible that is. But I also want to support NXT, so I guess I'll remain part of the problem and stick with the company anyway.]

The album is more than the sum of its parts if you ask me, but since you're not a full album person I don't know that you'd actually get a whole lot more out of it.

Well, I mean, it's possible. It usually only happens with concept albums, but there's a few non-concept albums that I enjoy listening to as a whole... Leonard Cohen's "You Want It Darker"...

...well, maybe just that one, actually. Kate Bush's "The Sensual World" & Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" are things I listen to on a regular basis, but I've never bothered trying to analyze them as a whole--they're just albums filled with songs I like.

Huh, with that response, I don't actually have enough room to get the next write-up into this post. Neat.

There wasn't too much variation with your nominations, mostly alternating between current VGMs and Metal Songs, but there were some interesting things there. Nekrogoblin is something I definitely would have never found on my own; having to actually think about BFG Division forced me to realize its high points instead of dismissing it outright as I wanted to on my first listen; and Lives was certainly interesting on multiple levels.

[FINAL-ER NOTES: Hey, I found a video with a translation of the lyrics immediately when I tried to Google it now. Like, first thing that came up. It's nice to have some idea of the lyrics, but I don't think it would have helped the placement any--there's nothing wrong with them, but they don't make me regret the placement any.]

====================================================

46:

Song Name: Thunder Road
Song Origin: Bruce Springsteen
Song Link:

Nominator: NBIceman (7/15)

I've heard this a few times, but not as often as you would expect. While the radio plays quite a few Spingsteen songs on a regular basis--Dancing in the Dark being the most common, followed by Glory Days, with a scattershot of Pink Cadillac, Born in the USA, Hungry Heart, and Born to Run playing at random times--I'm not sure I've ever heard this one play on any station.

Rather, this is a song I actively sought out on my own, briefly. I had a short-lived obsession with Streets of Philadelphia, a song so great that it proved to be an exception to my general reluctance to listen to songs with exceptionally heavy subject matter, and tried listening to some of his other hits. I quickly decided I just wasn't ever going to be a Springsteen fan outside of that one specific song and moved on.

Listening to it again now, I've apparently developed a greater appreciation for the song than I had years ago. I'm unsure what changed, but now I kinda get it. I like how the song ditches the traditional verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure, which helps it stand out. Also enjoy the way the song gradually builds, very nice.

[FINAL-ER NOTES: I think this is a bit too low, would probably move it up...three spaces, I think?]

[FINAL NOTES: A very nice song, even though it doesn't inspire any specific commentary.]

[REDACTED]

[FINAL NOTES: I spent several hours typing something up here, chaotically bouncing between serious topics and nonsense more irreverent than that one write-up, but have elected to delete the entire thing. The nonsense had no place around this sort of song and the serious parts were more than I wanted to discuss here.

...which I suppose is almost exactly the same write-up that other song got, so I have to try to say at least a little something.

The short answer: I support everyone's right to be whatever makes them happy and I don't feel right trying to critique a song that is so important to the creator and to the transgender community. Song wasn't created for me and I have no place in the discussion.

Truthfully, it reminds me a bit of a story about the recording of Elton John's "Someone Saved My Life Tonight":

"...A recollection from producer Gus Dudgeon. During the recording of the song's lead vocal, Dudgeon said he was pushing John for more in terms of his delivery of the vocal, not paying attention to the lyric. According to Gambaccini, guitarist Davey Johnstone leaned over and told Dudgeon, "You know he's singing about killing himself." Dudgeon was apparently mortified by the revelation and relented."

There's this sense that even though he was a music producer and critiquing Elton John's work was literally part of his job, the song was so emotional and significant to John that you just couldn't comment on it. And that's how I feel towards this song--due to its nature and the subjects it's dealing with, I don't have any place in the conversation, nor should I.]

An anthropomorphic arctic fox wearing a black cloak like a third-rate Organization XIII cosplayer paces around aimlessly, swishing her tail and twitching her ears.

"Oh, how many years has it been since I took this form? It's always bunnies, ponies, and wolves these days. Not that I often get a chance to use any forms, you know how normals are. You make one reference to your tail, they're just going to freak out. Even most of the furry community start looking at you weird when you can't be bothered to stay with one specific fursona for any length of time. And don't get me started on otherkin and therians..."

Since she hasn't even looked in your direction, you have the distinct impression that she isn't even talking at you anymore, having retreated to a dream world within a dream world in which you probably don't even exist.

"Not that I'm saying I've ever associated with such groups, of course. As for what we're actually here for:

I never knew this band started in the 90s. Since I hadn't really heard any of their songs until a couple years ago, I kinda thought their hits were all...ya know, recent. Which is stupid, of course a song wasn't created at the time I heard it, but I never really thought about it.

I'm sure I've heard this song a few times, but probably not all that many. Unwell & 3 A.M. get a good amount of play on the radio (well, mostly just 3 A.M. these days, now that I think about it), but I can't recall the last time I actually heard this one. It's familiar enough that I definitely have heard it, just, very hard to associate it with a time or place.

As someone who spends as little of her time in reality as possible, I'm obviously drawn to most of the lyrics. Sadly, it kinda deteriorates into a generic love song towards the end with its repeated "please don't change" refrain. It never gets annoying, but it does pull me out of my dream sequence and holds the song back from greatness; I'm here for fantasies and camels in bowling alleys, not generic messages about how your generic love interest is the only thing in your life that works, blah blah blah. I know that's the entire point of the song, but I already have plenty of generic songs with similarly generic messages."

[FINAL NOTES: I didn't intend to start the top 50 with a write-up in which I went full furry, but I guess that's appropriate for me.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: I was going to flip to a different account for this post since it felt odd being a fox in my bunny identity, but... eh, I prefer staying with this account, regardless of what I'm being that day. Not like I insisted Se7en invite my secret wolf account to Games N Things so I could be a wolf over there.]

Sometimes a mixed metaphor can work well, like here, where the singer changes metaphors in the middle of the song and then apathetically dismisses them. Everything about this song is considerably above-average, but I don't truly love any part of it...which makes it awkward to place anywhere, but I think it winds up here.

Nominator: Seginustemple (1/10)

Yet another song that I knew really well before the topic went up. Like I said, I grew up with oldies stations and this song was a constant fixture on the playlists. Still gets a decent amount of play.

Actually, I never looked into the band, so they have more songs that I recognize than I expected. Listen to the Music, China Grove, Takin' It To The Streets... didn't know all four songs were actually by the same band, since I'm not terribly observant. So the song gets a bit of a pass because while I do know the song, I really didn't know it as well as I should have.

...though it also loses points because I almost always kept it on the Classic Rock station in GTA V and this song was frequently played on it, so I heard it constantly when I played that game not too long ago.

This song reminds me that I should replay Tokyo Mirage Sessoins at some point. It would be easier if the game wasn't stuck on the Wii U. So few games I care about on that system, just getting everything hooked back up would be a bit of a pain... and since it relied on the Gamepad (err...didn't it?), I seriously doubt it's ever going to get ported anywhere. Which is too bad, since it deserved better than that.

It's unrelated, I know, but the Japanese Idol scene was integral to the plot and themes of that game, so it's not as random a connection as it seems. And I also have nothing to say about the song itself (it's good, but no specifics or other adjectives come to mind), so rambling about TMS is the best I can do. And I don't recall that game vividly enough to even do that.

[FINAL NOTES: MewTwo.]

====================================================

If I'd known it'd make you think of TMS and the idol scene I would've chosen Take My Chance instead, just because the intro leans into and parodies idol tropes super hard.

Presuming I remember, I'll listen to that tomorrow and let you know what I think.

Nominator: Murphiroth (2/15)

I almost got the Platinum trophy on Persona 5. I did two full playthroughs, the first on the hardest difficulty (...almost. I didn't realize Super Hard Mode was free DLC until after the second palace, I think?), but I made one stupid mistake on the second playthrough. I somehow missed one text message--which just so happened to unlock one specific mission, which would award you with one specific book.

No message=no mission=no book=impossible to get the "read all books" trophy. Requiring a third playthrough. It's my fault, but I'm still bitter.

This song got a lot of support at the most recent VGMC, but I never really got why. Last Surprise is obviously the best song in the game; Beneath the Mask is also a good choice, as it's very relaxing and I love the lyrics to it... not something I'd listen to often, but something that fills a very specific niche on my playlist, unlike every other song I listen to.

Rivers in the Desert isn't bad, but it's no Last Surprise. It has some nice lyrics, but I've just never been a fan of the chorus--the verses get me pumped up for a song about vengeance, with a bit of darkness ("I'm ready to strike him down now" isn't the most heroic line)... then as soon as she yells A RIVER IN A DRY LAND!!! I stop caring about the song entirely.

Then there's another verse and I start getting back into it again, only for the chorus to pull me out of it. The chorus is too happy and metaphorical to follow the more explicit vengeance lyrics from the verses. Still a good song, but I still don't get all the hype built up around it.

[FINAL NOTE: The fact that rivers in the desert is a biblical reference does absolutely nothing to help the song. And now things are getting really crowded in the DANGER ZONE!1!!

This is another song that is a bit too advanced for me, as I have no frame of reference to even start trying to understand these lyrics. He says people tell him he won't be successful because his songs are too angry, but...uhh...is that a problem in the industry? I mean, obviously, he would know, but I know nothing about the industry or what type of lyrics bring popularity.

And don't even get me started on the whole "Panda" interlude. Who the heck are we making fun of? Is there a rapper out there singing about turning people into pandas? If so, why am I not listening to them instead? Pandas > Heartfelt speeches that I am unable of comprehending.

It's not about Donald Glover/Childish Gambino, right? He has a show named Atlanta and Panda Man has some connection to Atlanta even though he's not from Atlanta, much like how pandas aren't from Atlanta. ...Yeah, I'm totally lost here.

This song's ranking has fluctuated so much since my first listen.

I don't like how high-pitched her voice is and whatever this genre is (folk metal is what I'm calling it) it's a step too far for me.

It's unlike anything I've ever heard, one of the best nominations this contest, I love it.

I am far too poorly educated to even remotely grasp the song, I'm not a fan.

I love it because I'll never understand it.

And so on, and so on. It's placement fluctuates wildly, almost at random. I hate everything, I love everything.

https://www.thestranger.com/music/2016/03/23/23825152/the-deeper-you-dive-the-more-there-is-to-joanna-newsoms-music

""['Leaving the City'] has the rhyme at the end of each line and the internal rhymes that follow one meter, and a secondary set of internal rhymes that sort of quietly annunciate a contrary meter that's overlaid on the first meter." She also said she "overlaid a contrary musical meter" on top of all that, and that I had to be "conscious of the sublimated contrary meter in order to trace the rhyme.""

Those are words I've heard, but...uhh...never in any combination even vaguely similar to those sentences and I have the feeling it would take years of classes from an actual teacher before I could even start to understand...anything. Like, a lot of these songs go over my head, but none so completely as this one.

[Not related to anything, but this is a note reminding me to look for more songs by Vektroid later. YouTube suggested something from her MACINTOSH PLUS alias after Guile's Theme played and I think I need more of...whatever this is.]

It is a good song and I love the sound fonts here (I should listen to more 90s arcade game soundtracks), and I do still like Street Fighter... but it's just too common. I've heard this constantly on so many ports, remakes, rereleases, and mods of Street Fighter 2 that it's almost omnipresent. Add in the Guile's Theme meme and the multiple Guile stages I have for MUGEN and...yeah, this song is everywhere.

Don't get me wrong, it's still good, but like Radio Ga Ga before it... there's just nothing new here.

The first thing we can point out here is that this song is significantly less hardcore metal than the rest of your nominations.

Largely because it's one that I nominated after you had everyone throw out as many songs as they wanted just to completely fill out everyone else's lists. </.<

I went into it a bit over at my topic, but I truly love everything about Fast Car. While I don't usually stick with serious songs like it, it resonates with me in a way that few songs ever have. Just perfect... actually at this moment, I may list it as my favorite song I nominated over here--it at least joins the top three alongside The Stand & Lady Stardust to battle it out, with the winner being whatever type of song I want at that exact moment.

Am I crazy enough to put this song up this high solely because they included a barking dog to illustrate how their boss barks like a mad dog?

Yes.

...though to be fair that's not actually the reason. It's pretty catchy and quite funny (the bit with the gun is even funnier than the dog), so no, it's not up here just because there was a dog; but also, yes, I am crazy enough to do so and the addition of the barking certainly didn't hurt the ranking...

I don't even like Devil May Cry, but this song is just ludicrous enough that I have to love it anyway. Also, I'm going to hell for putting this above that song about surviving genocide.

[FINAL-ER NOTES: Well that was unjustifiably short for a writeup, but it's difficult to properly praise the song because while it does a lot of things I like, it's all things I've praised before.

The voices seem to have some autotune or light distortion going on; not as much as I might like, but it's something.

It's cheesy and funny, so it always makes me smile.

Saying "I don't like Devil May Cry" is accurate, but doesn't quite do it justice; I had a friend who really liked the series and DMC 3 came out at the best time in my life, so while I wasn't too fond of the game (or more accurately: "too terrible to play it", wasn't there something with Capcom raising the difficulty so that our Normal was Japanese Hard or something?), it and the series do bring back some truly amazing memories.]

If I'd known it'd make you think of TMS and the idol scene I would've chosen Take My Chance instead, just because the intro leans into and parodies idol tropes super hard.

I think I like this song, but I don't come anywhere close to understanding it. Amusingly enough, TV Tropes accuses the band of having "Word Salad Lyrics" all over the place with no attempt given to explain any of it. So I'm apparently not the only one completely lost by this band.

Considering that I like this more than Short-Haired Tornado, I wonder if it's because it's so much harder to understand or if it's just that much catchier than the other song? *shrugs*

Why did I think there could be a song by a female artist without 90% of the comments being about her ass?

Why did I think there was no way anyone could take this song as a political statement?

Blech... sometimes you find insightful comments, sometimes incoherent gibberish like back at Red Sam's ranking, but usually you get the dumpster fire that is this video's comment section. Ah well, my fault for wondering what people had to say.

Hey, another band described as being "post-hardcore". I'm still not completely clear on what that is, but let's not go back down that rabbit hole. Good song, I'm also amused by how everyone seems to have a radically different theory on what it means:

One person arguing that, since the song is named after the guitarists third daughter, that has to be significant (it's about parenthood, or infancy, or both simultaneously, or whatever).

The standard 'improper pleasures has to be talking about kinky sex' theory.

And at least one person theorizes it's about gun control because someone in the band said there was a bit about gun control somewhere on the album and this song has the words 'killing field' in it, so maybe it's here??

Well, even if I don't completely get what it's about or what the genre is or why all of their song titles are in lower case, it's still a good song and I may regret having it this low. [NOTE: This song started in the bottom 20, but has jumped up to 139th place as of this writing. We'll see if it gets moved any higher.]

[FINAL NOTES: And the song with the most improved ranking finally drops. I have no idea how I ever had this at the bottom of the list, but this was the mythical song that I referenced moving up over a hundred places in the ranking. ]

well, it depends on what you mean by "classical music."

there's "classical music" in the broad sense that encompasses all kinds of classical music. that's still being composed today.

but there's also classical music as in "classical music composed during the classical era," like mozart. obviously that's NOT being composed today. by that definition holst's music isn't classical music either because his music is from the modern era. so he composed "modern classical music" (or "20th century classical" or whatever you want to call it), not "classical music."

does that make sense? >.>

It does, actually. Thank you!

Another song that feels a bit too on the nose for a nomination. Yes, I wanted more rap music. Yes, I was complaining that most of the other nominations were too hardcore or too hard to understand without more familiarity with the genre. Yes, I was complaining that some songs were dealing with too serious a subject matter.

"Here's a simple, happy rap song with references to The Simpsons and Febreeze!"

Yeah, I guess that's the literal definition of what I was looking for. Just....too literal, maybe? Like, surely there's some ground between GUMMY & half-hearted Simpsons' references, yes?

Nominator: Bane_Of_Despair (5/15)

It sounds haunting and mysterious, then you hear Tegan say that she wrote the song about having to wait until after 9 PM to make calls due to her cell phone plan. I can get wanting people to understand your art, but sometimes the work is better if you can step back and let it speak for itself.

Take Anodyne, a somewhat obscure Zelda-like game. I was completely fixated on that game and could not put it down; I had to find everything, read every line of dialogue, explore every single screen. Their was a story, but it was vague and difficult to understand--it was like exploring a dream, incredibly familiar & disturbingly wrong at the same time, with cryptic messages.

...then the creators decided to take to the Steam Community page to comment on which player's theories about the story was closest to the truth. In one post, they completely shattered their work. All the mystery was gone. I still like the game, but it's just not the same anymore.

So it is with this song; Without that one bit of honesty, this probably ranks even higher. But I can't forget what she said, so here we are.

[FINAL NOTES: Anodyne is out on PS4 these days... I can't decide if I want to buy a second copy to have on consoles or not. I did love that game and want to support the developers, but after they went and ruined everything, I'm not sure I'd enjoy it. Wonder if anything changed? I can think of a few lines of dialogue that I'm pretty sure wouldn't get onto consoles unedited... ah well, I've got too many PS4 games as it is. Maybe I'll wait and see if it drops onto a Flash Sale someday.]

This song should be my thing, but it's hurt by the fact that I don't care about the story they're trying to tell. "Sinister Silence" doesn't exactly inspire fear or an interest in learning more. The chanting of a fictional language doesn't really work for me, because why is the rest of the song in English?

That being said, the song is impressive and I like how it keeps changing throughout. The aquatic section starting around 4:20 is a candidate for most beautiful section of any song on the entire list, but the sheer variety of styles on display here keeps me from assigning too high of a score to any one specific section. It's a unique experience, but I need a better story to really pull me into it.

[FINAL NOTES: Yeah, this song's quality is too all over the place to raise any further than this.]

69:

Song Name: They.Resurrect.Over.New.

Song Link:

Nominator: Dragon66116 (5/15)

Hey, remember how I said that there was someone else who made a rap song that sampled Nightcall that I didn't like?

...

Turns out it wasn't this guy! As soon as I heard that Lupe had his own take on that song (American Terrorist III), I figured that had to be the song I was thinking of. It was thematically appropriate: This topic, after several years, giving me yet another chance to directly compare Childish Gambino and the rapper I couldn't remember the name of--this time with fully original songs, unlike the last time.

Then I listed to American Terrorist III and I definitely never heard that song before. Which is unfortunate, because I really like it too! Probably not as much as R.I.P., it's not a life-changing epipheny of music, but it's really great.

...too bad you didn't nominate that one. Not that you could have possibly known "alternate versions of Nightcall" were my thing (much less that I would have such a very specific thing), but... well you indirectly led me to a song I wanted to hear, so I guess it worked out anyway?

As for this song, there are parts of it I like. It probably gets way too big a bonus for opening with pinball sounds and because it led me to the other song, but whatever.

[FINAL NOTES: Honestly, this song is much better than that write-up made it sound. It just doesn't compare too favorably to the Lupe Fiasco song that I want to be listening to instead, which makes it harder to say nice things about it than it should be.]

71:

Song Name: Hard Habit to Break
Song Origin: Chicago
Song Link:

Nominator: IhatethisCPU (7/15)

Another song I had heard enough times to know by heart before the ranking, but this one gets a bit of a pass since I've never actually had this song on any of my playlists or mp3 players before.

((As far as I can recall the only three Chicago songs I've ever gone out of my way to listen to were "Walk Away", "Does Anybody Know What Time It Is?", and "25 or 6 to 4" ; though apparently I've never heard the full version of Time before, so it's debatable if I should even count that song.

...Having heard the full version now, I don't think the piano solo intro adds anything to DAKWTII? and am probably glad I never heard the full version, but I suppose that's neither here nor there..))

Either way, it's a nice song. It is very much the type of thing that I listen to on a regular basis and I think it gets a fair amount of radio play around here. The only complaint is that it offers nothing new to me ; it kinda makes me wonder why I haven't listened to more Chicago music, but if this song hasn't inspired me to listen to more of their work by now, it never will. Ah well; good song and I like it, but I'd have preferred a more obscure song of theirs that I didn't already know so well.

[FINAL NOTES: Coming up next--another song from the same time period, cut for the same reasons.]

70:

Song Name: Radio Ga Ga

Great song and video, but I've listened to Queen's Greatest Hits too often. From actively seeking out Greatest Hits albums, from the radio still playing several of their songs, to The Protomen releasing an entire album of Queen covers...

That being the only Protomen album I didn't enjoy, by the way. I loved the Cover Up with covers of a variety of artists' songs, but only copying one band--and not doing anything different with the songs--turned them into just a third rate cover band. Terrible album.

Anywho... great song, as I said, but not new enough to get a super amazing ranking.

[FINAL NOTES: It breaks my heart to put this song so low... but I'd feel even worse about putting any more songs below something I already liked as much as this song, so I'm cutting it off here.]

They are the hunters, we are the foxes

Baby, I know places we won't be found

That line bothers me too much. If you're going with a "we are the [non-human creature], they are the [human]" metaphor, don't immediately follow it with the humans chasing their tails. It doesn't work.

On the other hand, this song was pretty much guaranteed to get into the top 100 thanks to the "we are the foxes" line alone. Also, I guess it's pretty clever that the song is a secret recording, to emphasize that Taylor can never escape regardless of what she says. But mostly it's because she compared herself to a fox and I'll award bonus points to whatever I want.

I think this song is too deeply connected to other songs on the album for me to properly understand it. People start talking about "Jesus of Suburbia", "St. Jimmy", and "Whatsername" while I have no idea who any of those people are. I'm told JoS may be Jimmy and it's like...okay?

I do like concept albums and when they're done well, they could inspire me to seek out the rest of the album and try to understand everything. Unfortunately, this song doesn't do that; it's good, sure, but I don't actually care who Jimmy is. I feel no desire to get to the bottom of this mystery, which limits how far the song can go.

Before this started, I was reasonably prepared for multiple songs about suicide. Not a topic I'm comfortable with, but it was really an inevitability. I was not prepared for the Armenian Genocide.

This is another song that I feel is a set-up. Serious question: Am I even allowed to have a song like this in anything other than first place?

Of all the reactions I could have to this song, "want to party" is not one of them. I could be inspired by the message about people surviving in the face of overwhelming adversity and that even after genocide, some will survive and still find reasons to celebrate ; I could use it as an excuse to learn more about history, especially as it regards this topic ; I could dwell on the problems of the world, or really anything except shout "WOO! Hard to say exactly, as I didn't have hard numbers assigned to anything until near the end of the process. Notes indicate I had this predicted at somewhere in the top 30, so it dropped drastically between the second and third listens for reasons I was never able to put into words.

I would have thought it too soon for me to be nostalgic for the most recent VGMC, but apparently not. This is a song that I really wanted to like at the time, but I just didn't. I listened to it several times during the nomination period to see if I wanted to support it and I never did. And I don't think I voted for it in any of its matches, though it's possible I took it against something at some point.

Listening to it now though, I'm actually digging it this time. I'm not sure if it's just all the memories associated with the song pushing it up the ranking or if I'm just more interested in this style of music than I was earlier, but I actually like this now. Huh.

It's quite an impressive song. The lead singer has good range, I suspect she could sing just about anything. But somehow it's not clicking with me today, which is unfortunate. I enjoy the song, but not as much as it feels like I should. I think part of it is that I don't really care about the main Mario series. I don't have any negative feelings about the series itself, but I just...don't care. So you took a song I have no interest in, from a series I have no interest in, and covered it in the style of a music genre I've never really heard to have any opinion about. It's good and I do like it, and I praise it for being unique (both in context of the list and in things I've heard before), but...yeah.

It's somehow even goofier in practice:

The announcers don't say the name of unlockable characters (or at least Fred Durst's name), referring to him only as "Superstar". Resulting in a bored Tazz declaring things like "SUPERSTAR...is different than other Superstars.". It's all very surreal.

Limp Bizkit - Rollin'

Nominator: Seginustemple (2/10)

One of the only two songs on this list to directly play with my love of professional wrestling! Unfortunately I'd stopped watching WWE by the time Biker Taker was a thing, so it lacks the nostalgic punch of something from the 80s or 90s.

Fortunately, this still has several things going for it:

1.While I stopped watching wrestling, I was still playing the games. "Just Bring It!" included this song on the soundtrack, but as payment they had to include Fred Durst as a playable wrestler. So, I guess I do have wrestling related nostalgia for this song! Just in a really, really roundabout way.

2.I don't know why Fred Durst stealing Ben Stiller's car amuses me, but it does. I don't even care that I shouldn't factor that scene into the song's ranking, the opening always makes me laugh, and as I've said before--this list really needs a bit more humor.

3.Even though I'm mostly laughing at the song, it's catchier than something this stupid and repetitive has any right to be.

So... should the song be up this high? Probably not. But it amuses me and I can use whatever criteria I want, so it's up here anyway.

Considering the title, I was expecting some extremely vulgar death metal song. I wasn't prepared for the song to be, basically, the exact opposite. It's simple, but emotional enough that I still enjoy it.

[FINAL NOTES: So few comments and yet so many of them involve thoughts of self mutilation and death. This isn't really about suicide and yet the reaction it inspires in people is even bleaker than those songs.]

Quick thoughts on recently posted non-nominated songs:

"A Greener Grass" was amazing. Assuming it holds up on multiple listens, I think it'd probably drop around 17th place? It's not impossible for it to go higher, but I'd have to listen to it more times on different days before committing to anything really crazy.

The first Touhou song is interesting. It kinda reminds me of Persona music somehow; I like it, though I'm not as crazy about it... probably in the top 100, but I prefer Adequate, so around 90th place is about as far as it'd likely go.

The second Touhou song made me want to scream "AAAHHH, IT BURNS!!!" and throw the iPad out the window to escape the song after 30 seconds. Unless it improves drastically after that, it'd probably come in an easy last place.

Third and fourth Touhou songs were alright. Not as good as Adequate or the first link, but my thoughts on them were generally positive.

Nominator: Bane_Of_Despair (7/15)

This song mostly makes it so far due to the chorus. Like I've said before, I like villain songs, and those lines are just dark enough without being vulgar. Unfortunately, most of the rest of the song devolves into generic metal screaming, which drags it down quite a bit. I do like it, but it could be a lot better.

[FINAL NOTES: A better writer could draw some interesting parallels between this song and the Metal cover of Hellfire. The whole repeated lines of if I can't have you/her no one will and the way both songs are influenced by classical literature (Romeo & Juliet here, Hunchback of Notre Dame over there) while being done in a modern style of music...

...but I really wouldn't really know where to begin with such insight.]

This is a lyrical version of a Touhou song, right? I had no idea such things even existed. I've never played any main Touhou games, but I've seen a lot of the characters converted to MUGEN and had to try looking up quotes for most of them, so I have a decent knowledge of the most popular characters.

I'm into the concept of the song (I've listened to everything by The Megas, so yes, I like lyrical remixes of VGMs), I love the computerized instruments, I love the lyrics of the song... I just don't really like the singer himself, unfortunately. This comes so close to being one of my all-time favorite songs ever, but his voice holds things back for me.

More specifically, after listening to a few of his other songs, I don't think he's able to put enough emotion behind the words. No matter which character he's singing from the perspective of, or the lyrics themselves, it's always in a similar tone of voice. The villain singing in "No Guardian Angel" as they prepare to kill their victim should not sound exactly like Reimu lamenting that she never has a chance to rest between battles in "On The Moon".

To be entirely fair, that's not exactly his fault. It would be virtually impossible for any one person to portray so many different characters and the fast-paced nature of Touhou music doesn't offer much opportunity to even try properly expressing emotion. He did the best he could and I don't honestly know there's anyone who could have done better.

....Then again, I wouldn't mind hearing an entire album of these songs. so I may not be giving him enough credit...

[FINAL NOTES: I honestly don't want to have this song this low, but like Pentaly Shootout, I can't bring myself to move any other songs down to boost it.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: ...Is what I said at the time, but now I want to move this up at least 16 rankings. Very, very undervalued song.[

Song Name: National Anthem of USSR
Song Origin: The Red Army Choir
Song Link:

Nominator: handsomeboy2012 (5/15)

I have nothing to say about the Soviet Union or anything this anthem stands for, but it's easily the best anthem I've ever heard, regardless of who it was for.

[FINAL NOTES: I don't feel entirely comfortable having this song up as high as it is, but it really is quite good.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: This a hard one to justify ranking so highly, even for me. Let's see what arguments I can make to try and get away with this.

First, I have a bit of a bias towards songs that are unique on this list. This is the only national anthem, so it gets a boost from that.

It gets a further boost because there's very little Russian influence anywhere on the list. You have this and a gag song from an EA video game, and that's about it... and said game song only serves to make this sound even better in comparison.

Second, while I wouldn't say I really want to study history, I do get slightly intrigued by music that offers a bit of a lesson. In this case, I didn't know there were multiple versions of the anthem and found some interest in comparing the 1944 lyrics to the revised '77 lyrics--also, full disclosure, I have no idea which version of the anthem this is and I choose to be willfully ignorant so that I can pretend this is the '44 version because I like the lyrics more.

Third, the '44's chorus is actually rather nice. Particularly the:

Long live our people, united and free.
Strong in our friendship tried by fire.

line. That's just a good message, regardless of where it came from.

Fourth, and I know I've said it too often this list, the song honestly is rather catchy. Parts of it have gotten stuck in my head a few times and that's rather impressive, considering what the song is.

So while I would drop this down a few spaces to give a bit more credit to the last two songs that got eliminated, I do feel alright with the song being in this area of the rankings.]

I'm hard as nails, it ain't hard to tell
I break 'em down whether they solid or frail

...I know it's a common saying and this song predates the Dreamcast, but I can't read the song title without having flashbacks to Knuckles' SA theme.

Anyway, what I like most about this track is that it invites direct comparison to "Nas Will Prevail" ; while I was told Prevail was basically the demo of this song, almost all the lyrics have been changed and the background music is radically different. It's really interesting to listen to both songs side-by-side.

I vastly prefer the background music on "Nas Will Prevail" (to a point that I think that song may have hit the top 40, had it been nominated instead), but "It Ain't Hard To Tell"'s line about Shotguns in Hell might just be the most brilliant line in any song on this list; the line, by itself, is so evocative that it works even if you don't understand it (suffice it to say that I did not), then it takes on new levels of brilliance once you actually get what he meant.

....granted there's no way I would have ever put any of that together without the help of YouTube commenters, but that's probably why it's so brilliant.

[FINAL NOTES: This song joins Jeopardy & Winter as the third in the "you nominated the wrong version of this song" trio.]

Very bold statement there, blog. You believe that it seems like there's a story of some sort. Having repeatedly listened to this song, I can confirm that it is my opinion that I believe it feels like the singer is trying to communicate things.

[FINAL NOTES: The transition between both parts of the song also repeats "The Beat Goes On" too many times. It's a good song, very catchy, but I've already cut songs for less than that.]

[FINAL-ER NOTES: I feel like I slightly undervalued this song and slightly overvalued the song in #87's slot... doing this again, I'd probably drop the 87th song down to 89th place and move this song (along with the next one eliminated) up one space each as a result.

...not that such a minor change would really impact anything in any notable way.

Rukey & Gilman are both amazing, but I'd probably back Gilman since I...can't think of a single other worm-like character I've ever liked in anything, actually.

I still need to try to clear a run on the highest difficulty that was added sometime after launch. I tried going through it with all the Titan Stars active on every match...it uhh...wasn't going so well. Think I was around the last cycle with only one person saved before deciding I would just try again later, then started playing other things.
