2002 was utterly insane just because we knew none of the stuff we know now, and because we had insane matches like those Ulti mentioned as well as stuff like Mario/Crono I.

Seriously, Mario/Cloud was one of the greatest matches in contest history, and in my mind the only ones that match the craziness of that one was Link/Draven and maaaaaybe the 2007 finals where L-Block won out.

X-stats are a nice baseline but those numbers lack a lot of context.

The rare times I do well in these contests I generally look at past matches and see how debated characters did before and how their competition fared in other matches to get a rough guideline, basically reviewing the polls themselves rather than the actual x-stats. Other times like this contest I either go by gut or do a quick runthrough and forget to go through again and bomb.

Nintendo boost/FF7 deboost, though it turns out the deboost was probably more Vincent being a giant goober than FF7 in general.

Luigi is on par with X and Tifa, not really too bad and nobody really thought hed be exceeding that level anyway. Tifas definitely looking good here, and her performance here is also good.

So do you all think Link will SFF the Dorf worse than he did in 2004? Blowouts are more difficult with the lower votals and all (unless you're facing Draven), but Link also has a hell of a lot more reason to boost while the Dorf doesn't really factor into Link Between Worlds and Breath of the Wild.

It's specifically Squall's match. It really kills my enjoyment because I always loved the fact my favorite FF protagonist was very strong even if he wasn't the strongest. It made me happy to know he could always make some noise (before getting fed to Snake, forever, because...I don't know why, really). But this hurts because it indicates a downward spiral that is not reversible. Characters are not like sports teams, they don't have down years followed by rebounds - they weaken and weaken and weaken unless a very good and respected new game comes out to make them strong. And that's not going to happen for Squall because Final Fantasy is not that kind of franchise, so I have no reasonable way of clinging to hope that things will get better. It's a very bitter pill, really. Even if Mario (my other big beloved character) got the most unreal boost ever out of mario odyssey and scored 48% on Link, it wouldn't compensate the fact I know Squall's super finished now.

Now I want to see the reaction of someone whose favorite character is Kefka.
