Over the past few months, I've been going through a pretty rough time with my dad passing away. I knew my dad was on drugs for pretty much my whole life, and I knew that was why my mom decided to leave him when I was very young. I think I was about 1 year old at the most when they split. I never knew the details surrounding it, though.

I drove to Pensacola, FL to visit my dad while he was in the hospital. That Friday, we (myself, my aunts and uncles) had to decide on how we would deal with his end of life care. We decided to put him in hospice care. He died about a week and a half later.

During that whole process, I was able to reconnect with a lot of family on my dad's side. A lot of them haven't seen me in ~30 years. Neither my mom or dad ever talked about the story behind why they split up. All my mom would tell me is that he was on drugs and that's why she left. Over the past couple months, I've learned the story from multiple perspectives. My mom, aunts, uncles, etc.

My dad was promoted to plant manager at some construction company and we lived in a relatively nice house in Pensacola, FL. While taking my cousin home, he was driving drunk in the company car and hit some lady while she was crossing the street. She sued the company for $2 million and my dad lost his job.

That started a downward spiral into him doing drugs. My grandparents on my dad's side brought him back to Pollard, AL so they could help him get better. They paid for his rehab and everything. After graduating from rehab, I guess he went back to the same environment and started doing drugs again.

My mom tried to stay and help, but eventually she had had enough of it all. She worked for IBM and her manager was aware of what was going on. Her manager got her a position in Austin, TX to help her get away from my dad. She took me with her. I was about 3 years old when we moved to Austin, and I grew up here. I'd go back and visit my dad every now and then, but I grew up with out him for the most part.

I was talking to my mom about this again on Thanksgiving. This was the first time she told me that she had regrets about how she handled it. She moved to protect me, herself, and her career. She said she wonders whether he would have actually been better off if she had stayed instead. I had never considered this before she said that.

I told her I think she made the right decision. It could have also gone the complete opposite direction, meaning she'd get dragged down by it all, lose her job, etc. Then who the hell knows whether I'd still be around at all.

So yeah. I've always been thankful that my mom took care of me, but now that feeling has been amplified in ways I can't even describe.

Can you arrogant lads please explain to people who believe wi-fi harms you the science behind why it's safe rather than acting like jerks about it

Wi-Fi is safe, because it falls here, on the electromagnetic spectrum:

9f9Jpdz

It's on the 2.4 & 5GHZ spectrums, which is relatively low in the grand scheme of the universe. It's safer than direct sunlight, believe it or not. Have you ever had a sunburn? That's your skin literally getting irradiated by the sun. If Wi-Fi were tuned up to the same strength as you feel while outside on a sunny day, you would start to get sunburns from your router. That's pretty cyberpunk, actually.

How many X-rays have you ever had taken? X-rays aren't particularly safe when exposed for a while, but when an X-ray photo is taken of your body, you're momentarily bombarded with radiation in the 30 petahertz-30 exahertz range. Fuck, that's high. These are all SI units, just like hard drive storage, so imagine the difference between dealing with a file that's anywhere from 2.4gb to 5gb, and compare that to the nightmare size of a 30pb-30eb file. You don't even see "pb" or "eb" commonly used, because they're fucking enormous. A petabyte is one MILLION gigabytes, and an exabyte is one BILLION gigabytes. Fuck.

So, the differences are astronomical. And if you were literally sensitive enough to radiation that you couldn't handle the 2.4ghz and 5ghz frequency bands, you'd have to be placed in a dark bunker where no visible light could penetrate, effectively making you blind. You could listen to a radio, without any lighting at all, and that's it. Even reading a book would require some kind of visible light source, which would be a no-no. What a miserable life.

So, yeah, that's fun science for you. Print this post out and show it to people and I guess erase all my "fucks" if need be

1) The odds of running into someone who thinks this IRL are slim to none.
2) The odds of running into said person who thinks that and them understanding that chart and explanation are even slimmer, by comparison.

The anime really went to fucking pieces with the pacing. I put my hands up when I realised it took luffy about 30 episodes to beat Bellamy at Dressrosa.

I'm not even exaggerating. They rehashed that scene for 30 straight episodes, I counted. In the manga I believe it was one chapter.

Which is a shame because the anime truly is brilliant when it has its moments. That music, the voice acting, it's all top tier.

I refuse to belive this is true

I think it's more that they kept cutting away from the fight to show other things going on. The fight went from episode 698 to 720, but it was because they didn't show the fight in one continuous scene.

Yes this is true, but it's still inexcusable. In that arc I watched the same scenes cut and pasted over and over again over various episodes just to drag it out.

It was like this scene but without any self-awareness:

I can understand why they did it, but ultimately it ruined all dramatic effect.

Yeah, it definitely takes away from what could be good-to-great dramatic events.

Does it bother people to not be able to have a conversation without everyone hearing what you have to say?

That's what bothers me the most about the idea.

Our corporate office actually has white noise playing in the background, so it's actually a bit difficult to hear other people's conversations at normal levels unless you're sitting relatively close.

I had forgotten about the white noise thing until I bought some noise canceling headphones and heard the difference with them on/off.

1) Make sure you pay all of your bills on time
2) Keep your balance as low as possible. The % of your total credit that you owe is a factor.
3) Keep credit card accounts open as long as possible.
4) Ask for credit limit increases and/or sign up for new credit card accounts. Don't do too many of these too close together. Having more hard inquiries hurts your credit.

scheme to help a coal company avoid paying for a costly toxic waste cleanup

Isn't that supposed to be the job of the EPA?

The job of the EPA would be to enforce regulations so that companies avoid having toxic waste that needs to be cleaned up. Not helping them avoid paying for a toxic waste cleanup that they're responsible for.

It's the Environmental Protection Agency, not the Escape Payment Agency.

WASHINGTON (AP) The Trump administrations top environmental official for the Southeast was arrested Thursday on criminal ethics charges in Alabama reported to be related to a scheme to help a coal company avoid paying for a costly toxic waste cleanup.

Trey Glenn, 47, was briefly booked into a county jail in Birmingham before being released on a $30,000 bond. Glenn was appointed in August 2017 to serve as chief of the Environmental Protection Agencys regional office in Atlanta, which oversees operations in eight states stretching from the Carolinas to Mississippi.

A grand jury indicted Glenn and his former business partner Scott Phillips earlier this week. Prior to Glenns appointment at EPA, he and Phillips worked for the coal company Drummond Co. to build state and local opposition to a federal Superfund cleanup in Birmingham that their client would have had to help fund.

Glenn resigned as director of the Alabama Department of Environmental Management in 2009 following an earlier ethics scandal in which he was not charged. He worked as an industry lobbyist before his appointment to EPA.

In a statement provided by his lawyer, Glenn denied the charges.

The charges against me are totally unfounded, and will be vigorously defended, Glenn said. I am innocent and expect to be fully vindicated.

The office of EPA Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler has declined to comment since Glenns indictment was first reported by local media in Alabama on Tuesday.

Were not going to comment on that, EPA spokesman John Konkus said Thursday. Were just not going to do it.

Wheeler has been running EPA since former Administrator Scott Pruitt resigned in July under a cloud of ethics scandals. Congressional Democrats on Thursday pointed to Glenns arrest as further evidence of the corruption they said has been rife at the agency under President Donald Trump.

How many Trump administration members have been arrested now?
