Absolutely. That last scene is why I think Gaga has a better chance at acting awards than Cooper. She played it like it was absolutely real to her. Very powerful.

Saw it today. The music was good because of the performance more than composition. Without Gaga, I don't know that the movie actually works. Gaga is more likely to be awarded than Cooper because she also held her own as an actress. And yeah, anyone who hasn't seen it but will, be prepared for the likely tears. I found the beats of the story predictable, but you'd have to be pretty cynical and/or cold hearted to not be touched.

The Dark Knight is the reason the academy expanded the number of potential nominations. Logan, well, all of the oxygen got sucked out of the room by Get Out and The Shape of Water. I do agree that the Academy leans too hard on arthouse, but with the 6-10 nominations system non-arthouse films are getting recognition.

As for Deadpool, the Academy doesn't like anything crass. Winter Soldier was quite good, but personally I can't name a movie that should have been dropped for it other than American Sniper. That movie was garbage, but the average age of the Academy means they couldn't see it. Eastwood is so much better than that jingoistic dumpster fire.

That's not true. While I would agree that the academy has lately been far from representative of what the general audience will like, some of their picks are still great. If you haven't seen the aforementioned Whiplash it's amazing. Last year Get Out got nominated. Mad Max Fury Road and The Martian both got nominated in the same year. I feel mixed on their choices, but such an absolute statement is a bit unfair, don't you think?

I don't see something as pandering when you're talking about a movie with such deep cultural impact. Even though BP made 1.3 billion people in Hollywood still think "black films" don't make money and aren't worth making/distributing/promoting. It's definitely not the best movie of the year, but it may be the most important and impactful.

I just saw A Star is Born today and First Man last week. I've also seen some fringe contenders for nomination in Black Panther, Eighth Grade, and Crazy Rich Asians.

Of those, First Man is in my mind the straight up best. It is absolutely brilliant. If you compare it to Apollo 13, which covers a similar topic, you can see just how much difference a great director can make over a good one. Whiplash and La La Land weren't flukes, Chazelle is a powerful director and this might just be his Best Picture winner.

The movie I'm disappointed in not seeing many (is any) mentions of is Sorry to Bother You. If you like dark comedy and haven't seen it yet you should (unless the deserved R rating might turn you off).

I'm gonna hold on to hope that the two will be teamed up for Heroes For Hire. Disney wouldn't want to poach either character in their current live action form, it's not kid friendly stuff. Combining the two opens up new possibilities and lowers production costs overall.

Cuphead didn't get a lot of noms and he's performing like a 16 should against a 1 seed. It doesn't look like he got done dirty to me, it looks like he got a pretty fair placement and votes for how popular he is.

I think this is right. FFs and Zeldas tend to gain more popularity when they aren't the most recent. I think for some games there may be a goldilocks zone where it's still new enough to give it a second chance and reconsider, but not old enough for them to lose favor due to a shrinking fanbase.

I did mean 2006, and I did state that the results were questionable that year. But if you think of Tifa and Vincent as being roughly similar strength then Zelda isn't too far off from Squall. Either way the point is moot. I didn't come into this topic to debate the relative strength of these two. Like I said a few posts ago, I knowingly took Zelda out of betting interests. You don't win the contest without taking some chances, and it wasn't the biggest chance anyone took. Probably wasn't the biggest chance I took, for that matter. The chips will fall where they do.

the gap between Link and Cloud between 2006 and 2010 actually shrank and that's with Cloud getting noticeably weaker

it's probably bigger than ever now but that's mostly because FFVII in particular has dropped off sharply in a way that nothing else here really has

Chrono friggin' Trigger came out of nowhere in 2015 looking like the strongest game on the site, and it's had nothing.

I still at my core reject the notion that CT wasn't always a favorite son for this site. It wasn't meant to be, but I took Crono in CB2k2. I can't remember if something happened that year of note, but CT is solid 'round here. I think what we really didn't see coming was the complete collapse of Melee, which was apparently a flash in the pan in that first games contest.

And if we're going straight stats, Zelda found herself right in the middle of the N9 in 2k5. Questionable stats, of course, but better than anything Squall ever did.

I don't know about that first part. Maybe it doesn't matter, or maybe he could have garnered a bigger boost. It doesn't change the fact that his stock is in decline since.

As for significant, I mean in the past he'd have to have beat her every year and it wouldn't be a question. The fact that she has been strong enough to potentially challenge him in the past means, to me, he's not significantly stronger.

Squall is primarily from a one-off game and in the KH series he's not called Squall. Also, he's never been significantly stronger than Zelda, whose name is on one of the most celebrated games of this (and every) console generation. I won't claim that my pick of her isn't the minority pick for a reason, but I will say that she'll put up a hell of a fight either way.
