Meh, wouldn't affect me much, I generally avoid rolling humans (or elves) as much as possible in any RPG that offers them as an option. To the extent I've actually skipped some MMOs where they were literally the *only* options.

If the game can't even compel me to make it past character creation, I don't much stock in anything else it has to offer.

I find that incredibly hard to believe, but I am not saying you're wrong. Not sure about other MMO's, but I do remember playing World of Warcraft the first five years or so and women players were looked at by guilds like they were unicorns (you know, rare to the point of being mythical). None of the major guilds ever presented as being heavy or even just equal on female representation, but it is of course possible that their members were either lying or just really secretive. It was refreshing to see women players featured in a few short WoW documentaries, but it was almost always part of a story about men and women dating online and even marrying in some instances.

It's possible the numbers have gone up over the years (given the age of WoW in particular), and it probably varies between MMOs too. I knew plenty of gals who played City of Heroes and WildStar for example. Ironically, those are games that got shut down, more interestingly though is that the ones who played CoH never really latched onto any other MMO, having seemingly abandoned the genre, and the ones I know that are funneling out of WS right now have no plans to pick up any other MMO. That would seem to suggest that for at least some female gamers, there's something that draws them to some games within a genre while making them avoidant of others.

I don't know if it's relevant that both of those games were based on original IPs (as opposed to something like WoW & FFXIV being based on existing RTS and RPG franchises that are sometimes viewed as "for boys"), or how one game was renowned for its character creation, and the other had a massive amount of housing customization, suggesting perhaps that the appeal of both games for some gals was more for the RP potential than PVE or PVP. (There's been claims that RP servers tend to be populated by equal or greater amounts of female players, but I wouldn't know, I never played on RP servers.)

By comparison, I think MOBAs are still predominately male, and I don't know about class shooters and battle royales. Though... I think it was mentioned in this topic that Fortnite has a lot of female players, incidentally one of it's mechanics involves building stuff.

Hmm, now that I think about it, I know a pretty equal number of male and female gamers who play things like Minecraft, Ark, 7 Days to Die, Subnautica, Rust, Conan Exiles... but then that probably makes some degree of sense because the survival/building genre became huge around the time that games started being more gender-neutral in their marketing. Which in turn might account for why the genre continues to boom; Everyone feels invited to play in the sandbox.

Another consideration is that a lot of the boys from back then are dads now, and it's probably safe to say that a lot of them would be just as peachy-keen about their daughters playing games as their sons, so that's another factor helping to remove any stigmas above games being a "blue aisle or pink aisle" kind of thing now, to the point I wouldn't be surprised if said gamer dads care even less about drawing lines between PC/console/handheld/mobile compared to us childless folks, because they just enjoy the fact that they can share a hobby with their kids regardless of how "into" said hobby their kid is.

Which was kind of funny, that for all the jokes people make about men playing female characters, it's likely that there's just as many women playing male characters, or that a female character *is* being played by an actual woman (but they purposefully lie about their real life gender to avoid... obvious issues).

Another interesting factor is how "fanservice" doesn't seem to be limited to just scanty female characters as much anymore, plenty of male characters get to run around half-naked too or find themselves subjected to butt/pec shots during cutscenes. I suppose one *could* argue that it's meant to cater to homosexual male gamers, but that's probably only half-true at best.

As far as gaming goes overall (mobile included), the numbers probably aren't "equal" but there's definitely more female gamers than most people think.

Black Ops 4 doesn't show deaths or kill/death ratio on the in-game scoreboard, you have to scroll over someone's name to see their deaths. Plus, in objective game modes, it lists score and objectives captured before kills so they're seen first, and there's no public combat records so you can't show off your K/D ratio to other people.

Which is a good thing. The less people care about padding their precious K/D ratio so they can win what's essentially a virtual dick-measuring contest, the more they'll (hopefully) play the fucking objective and actually try to win the game. Every time I get a teammate who gets 30+ kills but less than 5 confirmed tags in Kill Confirmed, or 40+ kills but only 1-2 flag captures in Domination, it makes me want to punt the guy's head into the grand canyon.

I distinctly remember when I first played Final Fantasy 8, I was 15 at the time, I found myself crushing on Laguna just as much (if not moreso) than Quistis.

Was a weird thought at first, since being fond of female characters wasn't new for me at that point, but that was the first time I found a male character attractive, and it made me rethink my tastes up to that point to see if I had been "missing out".

I'm 35 now, and ultimately it turns out my tastes are still pretty finite and fickle. A guy, real or fictional, has to be pretty girly to catch my attention, but it still showed that I had a preference for both genders when previously I thought I only had it for women.
