51. Fatal Frame III: The Tormented (Game) (19 points)
Nominated by: Axl_Rose_85 (4/5 remaining)

Importance: 4
Fear: 7
Snake: 8

Following in the footsteps of the cult classic Fatal Frame 2 is no easy feat, but Fatal Frame 3 brings with enough enough quality-of-life improvements that makes it a very worthy sequel to its predecessor. Like previous titles, Fatal Frame III's main combat operation is the Camera Obscura, which can capture ghosts on film. The combat feels a lot more smooth and fluid compared to the somewhat clunky nature of previous titles but to compensate the ghosts feel faster too. This time around, Fatal Frame III follows the story of freelance photographer Rei Kurosawa, who ends up seeing her dead fiance in one of her photographs. Rei rivals Mio Amakura as my favorite protagonist in the series, thanks to her emotional storyline and overhang of grief that plagues every aspect of her mental state, showing in the game through Rei's dreams and through the game's antagonist, Reika, who contains other people's sadness in tattoos on her body. In a series full of depressing storylines, Fatal Frame 3 seriously goes the extra mile in showing us the torment Rei goes through daily. Some characters from previous games also return, and gameplay even varies depending on who you're playing as. If you love the previous Fatal Frames, you'll love this one too! It's the most solid gameplay wise, and its dark storyline makes you want to see through it to the end.

Nominated by: scarletspeed7 (2/5 remaining)
https://imgur.com/gallery/G7UcDsE

Importance: 4
Fear: 7
Snake: 8

If the name of the first volume didn't already clue in you in to what you're getting yourself into, Locke & Key is a heavily Lovecraft inspired comic series with plenty of its own originality to go around. Written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodrguez, it details the story of the Keyhouse, which below it is a portal to another dimension filled with demons. The comic initially follows a very simple haunted house ghost story, as a family moves into the Keyhouse after the recent death of their father. The youngest, Bode Locke, finds the ghost door, separating his spirit from his body, and from there the insanity only grows worse & worse. In true Lovecraftian fashion, Locke & Key deals with the concepts of cosmicism and insanity and the hopelessness that nothing you do really matters in the end. However, some of the artwork and focus on children can feel light-hearted at times but it really makes the horror stand out a lot more when they really start breaking out the cosmic monsters. There are 6 volumes to the series and 1 collection of one-shots, and it's not a very long read. Several attempts have been made to adapt the series into a TV show or film, and right now it's in the hands of Netflix. Maybe one day something will come of it.

53. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Series) (19 points)
Nominated by: Anagram (3/6 remaining)

Importance: 8
Fear: 4.5
Snake: 7.5

When the original 1992 film came out, the world perhaps wasn't ready for its subversive take on the horror genre. As its script was altered and changed, Whedon's vision wouldn't be fully realized and the film suffered as a result. Luckily, the satirical Scream came along in 1996, changing the face of horror forever, giving Buffy and Whedon the second chance they so desperately deserved. The series stars Sarah Michelle Gellar in her career defining role as Buffy Summers, a typical high school student who's life is turned upside down when it's revealed she's the last in line of a series of vampire slayers. Buffy subsequently tries to balance her normal life with her destiny, battling supernatural forces whilst trying out for the cheerleading team or going on dates. Buffy was specifically created as a subversion of the final girl, and is in the inverse in almost every way: blonde, promiscuous, and having a strong fighting spirit in her.

Buffy presents itself primarily as a comedy-drama series, but it could be damn scary when it wanted to be, rivaling the X-Files in memorable monsters of the week, such as the Queller, Der Kindestod, and arguably the scariest and most well-known, The Gentlemen. The fact that Buffy was able to bring significant chills to the table definitely helped separate the series from similar teen dramas, opening up accessibility to several different types of audiences. Buffy's strong and memorable cast also helped the series maintain relevancy. Characters like Willow resounded with early audiences as a loner, outcast, and vulnerable young woman, before developing into a stronger and more confident adult with latent magical powers and a relationship with Tara Maclay, bringing to television one of the first lesbian relationships. Fan-favorite vampire Spike started off the series as a one-off villain, but his Billy Idol-inspired look and complex emotions that defied the typical heartless vampire made Spike a permanent fixture of the series. Angel is another vampire cursed with a human soul, and his complicated relationship with Buffy as he's torn between two worlds is extremely compelling. Angel even ended up getting his own spin-off series.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer continues to endure and gain new fans even after the series has long since ended. It was creative, experimental, hilarious, emotional, and wasn't afraid to be scary when it needed to be. It came along at a perfect time in horror history where teen slashers ruled and a resurgence of vampire flicks rose to popularity, as Buffy challenged all sorts of long-standing horror tropes and created something new and memorable out of those tools.

https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/momo

Importance: 4.5
Fear: 5.5
Snake: 8.5

In just a few short days, Momo sprung up and disappeared as quick as she arrived. And yet, it's hard to get her face out of my head. The first time you lay your eyes on Momo you will undoubtedly be at least a little freaked. Her giant eyes and horrid grin seem out of place in such a realistic image, and you may even think to yourself, "Could this be a real monster or even a person?" Then you dig a little deeper and learn of Momo's cursed phone number on WhatsApp and the suicide game associated with it. It all adds up to a little urban legend perfect for late night storytelling amongst friends. I really quite enjoy stuff like this, and I try to ignore a lot of the bullshit that also comes with it. YouTube clickbait runs rampant with Momo even today, as people try and use her image for cheap scares, fake pranks, and even faker calls. A lot of the fear factor with Momo gets greatly diminished not only by these dime store videos, but when I saw Momo's chicken legs, I laughed at the sheer absurdity of the entire thing. In reality, Momo is an art sculpture designed by Link Factory, which is cool, but makes Momo more of an absurdist statement rather than a fearsome icon of horror.

Whether you love her or hate her, the short story of Momo was also undoubtedly an interesting one either way.

It did, back in 1989. There's like a million crossover comics with Predator and Alien with practically every major character you can think of.

Some other notable ones off the top of my head are the Wildstorm Nightmare on Elm Street comics, Army of Darkness which crossed over with Marvel Zombies, and a crossover called Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash which also had a sequel of its own.

55. This scene from Shutter (18.5 points)
Nominated by: jcgamer107 (1/5 remaining)

Importance: 3
Fear: 7
Snake: 8.5

This scene is absolute proof not all jumpscares are created equal. It's arguably the most memorable scene in Shutter and it's perfectly crafted in many ways to scare you at any moment. Note the quietness of the scene and the safety of both Jane at Tun's side and the general symbolic nature of beds and sleep. It slows builds up tension, with the pulling of Tun's blanket seemingly lasting an eternity before it hits with the jump, BAM! Most movies would be content to stop there, but Natre continues to be aggressive, turning the jumpscare now into real, tangible danger for the protagonist as he desperately tries to wake Jane up. Suddenly, however, it's all over. Under the bed? Nothing. Around the room? Nothing. Perhaps we can finally breath now. Shutter though continues its assault on the senses though, with one last jump violating the safety of where Jane should be positioned and coming as a true shock to the senses.

This scene is so good! We feel fear at many points here because the danger of Natre is haunting and omnipresent as the film continually pounds your senses with scare after scare and tension ratcheted up to 11. You're supposed to be afraid of Natre, and the film makes plenty sure of that. That's all you can really ask for in a horror film.

Importance: 6
Fear: 5
Snake: 7.5

The Man They Could Not Hang may not be that well-known in the mainstream Karloff canon but to horror aficionados it's a very enjoyable part of it with a few neat trivia facts to its name to really cement its horror legacy. It is the first of three films with similar plots all starring Karloff and each directed by Nick Grinde, lightly based on the story of John "Babbacombe" Lee who survived three separate hanging attempts. In the film, Karloff portrays a mad scientist obsessed with resurrection (sound familiar?) but is hung when his assistant's girlfriend finds out about his twisted experiments. Karloff vows revenge on everyone who sentenced him and is brought back to life using his experiment and Karloff executes his murder plot. The plot is simple, but the real draw here anyway is Karloff's performance. One very interesting thing about this film is that Karloff builds a machine very similar to the basis for open-heart surgery, as a science-fiction concept became reality. At only an hour, it's sure worth a watch for yet another great Karloff performance.

https://aeolipera.wordpress.com/2016/04/08/excerpt-from-pet-sematary/

Importance: 6.5
Fear: 6
Snake: 7

Whilst Pet Sematary doesn't stand on the same legs as great american novels like The Stand or It, there's a lot to be gleaned from this creepy tale that still keeps up people late at night to this day. Pet Sematary deals with death in various creepy and interesting ways, even including the death of Gage, a two-year old toddler, which of course devastates his family. Rachel, who fears and greatly hates the concept of death, also has experience with it from when she was young with her ill sister Zelda, who died from spinal meningitis. Rachel hates admitting it to herself, but she feared her sister more and more by the day thanks to a monstrous appearance that worsened by the day. Of course, there's also the titular Pet Sematary, which in reality is an ancient burial ground with cursed powers of resurrection. I particularly love how the Sematary looms over the entire book, and how no character who even sets their eyes on it can escape its reach and unholy power. Even Louis by the end of the book learns nothing from using the Sematary on Gage and tries to resurrect his wife with it to a fate we can only assume was the same as his son. Pet Sematary is regarded by even King himself as one of his darkest and most hopeless books, and the way it deals with such heavy topics makes the book a chilling read from front to back.

58. Undertale Genocide Route (18 points)
Nominated by: trdl23 (2/5 remaining)

Importance: 4
Fear: 6
Snake: 8

The capacity for video games to make us feel like monsters can vary from title to title and the tone can be different too. We probably don't really feel much slaughtering 1000s of unnamed NPCs in a GTA game, yet one Little Sister sacrifice in BioShock can make us feel dirty and even a little sick. Undertale on the other hands combines the two and makes every character in the game matter. Playing Undertale through the genocide route will make you feel things you thought you never would, especially if under the right circumstances. Playing through a pacifist route your first time will get you nice and acquainted with the game's entire charming cast, from its dungeon-crawling monsters to heavy hitters like Sans, Papyrus, and Undyne. Genocide route will then task you with killing all your favorite characters, everyone from Napstablook to Lesser Dog, absolutely no one is spared and you will feel terrible for doing it. No exceptions. Even if you do Genocide first, playthroughs for Pacifist and the game in general become irrevocably broken to always remind the player of their horrible misdeeds. Many games are meant to bring happiness and relief, or to pass the time, but Undertale destines itself to be something more and pry emotions out of the player they may not want to experience.

3) Absolutely, Year One is a solidified classic, Trinity is the pure distillation of the three big heroes of DC, and Slayride shows not every story needs to be grand and universe-spanning to be great.

4) I'm not sure if it would be against TOS but maybe you could link to official buying sources to help the people who want to go that route instead of the Discord way.

Nominated by: Inviso (4/6 remaining)

Importance: 4

Okay, I have one very important question: when the hell is she getting her own movie?! Seriously, this girl is amazing. I suppose each one of her performances becomes a mini horror film anyway, with even the judges fulfilling particular roles, like Anggun's frightened and cursed protagonist and David's laidback and disbelieving character that would probably get him killed first. I really love her imaginary friend performance the most I think, because it really shows off Riana's chops for tension and horror theatrics. Appearing in a Polaroid photo though or even performing an honest-to-god jumpscare on Anggun are also both incredible too and such are classic horror elements that it's impossible not to love when you seem them performed live like that. The sheer devotion to her craft and character astounds me, and she nails every aspect of the J-horror tropes so well, right down to the twitchy movements, sense of dress, the long black hair, even her soul-piercing gaze, and she combines them light Western horror elements too such as the Ouija and demonic possession and haunting.

She ended up winning the Asia competation but went out in the quarterfinals of America's Got Talent, which probably means all the judges and all who didn't vote for her there are cursed now. I know I'm safe anyway! Riana is a great character and horror creation that just may just make you a believer in the dark side of this world.

60. Hachishakusama (Japanese Urban Legend) (18 points)
Nominated by: ihatethisCPU (1/5 remaining)

E4KwWM3

Importance: 3.5
Fear: 7
Snake: 7.5

If you hear three deep, bumping sounds, you are warned that Hachishakusama is coming for you. This eight foot tall woman has been compared to the Creepypasta legend Slender Man, due to her penchant for abducting children, but I think she may even be a lot creepier than the infamous tall guy in the nice suit. Her horror roots are firmly planted in the realm of J-horror, and as such, Hachishakusama lives in the realm of curses and psychological torture; her appearance means a three-day limit on your life, much like Sadako's 7 day curse. She is usually drawn with a white dress and long black hair that covers her face, further cementing the Sadako comparison. Where she differs though is her abnormal height, towering over her victims and usually appearing out of place in small rural villages of Japan. This sense of misplacement can make her victims feel insignificant and powerless even before her curse settles into the dark recesses of the mind. Hachishakusama's unique calling card, a deep voice that goes "Po, po, po" like deep thudding sounds, can also be quite haunting. Overall, a fun urban legend that may have you jumping at any similar sounds late at night.

Really enjoyed this ranking, I like the sporadic and off-the-cuff way you do write-ups, you never know what you're gonna get in them.
