I guess my argument is simply that just because an action happens to be in your self-interest that doesn't make it selfish. MLK wasn't really the main point of my post (apparently I picked a poor example), I meant any person who dedicates their life to improving humanity.

<Yes it is. No one does ANYTHING altruistically. "There's no such thing as a truly selfless act." I mean you can disagree but the argument is strong enough that "not true at all" is not something you can say.

Lol that is definitely false. So for example people like MLK performed heroic actions for secretly selfish reasons? I can't believe that.

The theory that suffering is good for us:

Little inconveniences, exertions, pains these are the only things in which we rightly feel our life at all. If these be not there, existence becomes worthless, or worse; success in putting them all away is fatal. So it is men engage in athletic sports, spend their holidays in climbing up mountains, find nothing so enjoyable as that which taxes their endurance and their energy. This is the way we are made, I sayThat our pains are, as they are, unendurable, awful, overwhelming, crushing, not to be borne save in misery and dumb impatience, which utter exhaustion alone makes patient that our pains are thus unendurable, means not that they are too great, but that we are sick. We have not got our proper life. So you perceive pain is no more necessarily an evil, but an essential element of the highest good.

i wouldn't quite say i've found direction in life yet, but i do have somewhat of an "overarching life purpose" that i aspire to, and that is to get the fantasy series i've had building up in my head and in my notes for over half my life into a form where i can get it, the world it is set in, and the plots that it contains out into the world for others to experience, and to hopefully leave a lasting legacy with it. i've begun to seriously buckle down on this only in the past few years though.

Awesome! I'm a writer myself but a project like that is beyond my capabilities. Hopefully it comes to fruition for you.
