Because your experience is no longer in any way reflective of Steam's impact on PC's. A decade is a long time. Things have changed.

Wrong. They may install from the disc but that copy is mine. It can't be taken away if a license expires.

Wrong. Even with a physical copy, you are only licensing the game. You do not own the game in any way, and if the publisher had legal cause to do so, your license could legally be revoked, leaving you with a useless piece of plastic.

Now, the actual logistics of making that happen? It's not exactly practical. In practice, they're more likely to respond to you misusing the license by fining you. Legally, however, you have absolutely no right to the ownership of that game. Given your absurd paranoia regarding Steam, I'm surprised you haven't read more EULA's for the games you buy.

Don't you have to be online to turn on offline mode?

Not usually. You do have to go online every two weeks or something like that to maintain it, but if you, say, open your laptop in a place that doesn't have wifi and want to play a Steam game, you can activate it then.

Nobody has proven otherwise. They just claim you're offline and your games won't work. They won't improve anything.

I don't own the game in a sense that I can edit and resell. What I DO own is that specific copy to play when and where I want. License be damned, it's my copy on a read-only format. They can't do anything about it.

The ironic thing is you're preaching like you know anything about discs while also pretending Steam isn't trash. HL2 was the ONLY game I purchased that straight up told me I couldn't use it. Any other disc or cart, toss it in and it works. Because I was offline Steam was like 'go F yourself' when trying to load HL2. If this is what you're defending then you're a lunatic.

Online every 2 weeks huh? Funny 'cause I remember M$ trying to push 'always online' a few E3's ago. They got what they deserved and never recovered. If PC users were smart they'd dump the platform just the same.

On the other hand, any dimwit company who wants an extra buck could take back a digital release and you have nothing to say about it.

Maybe YOU haven't lost a digital game yet. We've seen games get delisted. PT vanished. It's the fact they have the ability to do it. And I like the collecting aspect too. I go all the way back to Atari.

No. You purchased the game and it belongs to you. That's the law. No company in history has ever had the legal right to take a product back from the buyer. The closest thing is recalls, which are only done because the product is deemed dangerous or faulty, and even then recalls aren't really mandatory, just a way of the company getting ahead of legal repercussions by acknowledging a problem. No one can come into your house or go on your computer and take something you have purchased.

Yes, Steam can remove a game from the listing so no new people can buy it, but people who already own it can still play it and reinstall it forever. That is entirely different from a game being taken away from you. Your entire argument is pulled directly from your butthole. So you like collecting? Fine. That doesn't mean Steam sucks. It means you prefer doing things the archaic way.

I have plenty of reasons, all true. Because of Steam PC's will never catch up with consoles again. Specs and graphics aren't as important as you think.

I know, because I bought the disc. The rights can't be sold and my game disabled remotely. There are no such protections with digital. As I said it may not have happened to you yet but we've seen enough to know they CAN do this. A disc at retail will drop in price months faster than anything digital online.

Oh it absolutely means Steam sucks as well as anyone ignorant enough to use it. Maybe you don't know or don't care what it's doing without your permission. Hell it's probably your parent's PC anyway. I won't say digital is useless as there is room for both. But going all digital is 100% wrong.

Sony has the games that's why. What possible reason could XB have to win anything? All they manage to do is recycle the same 3 games. Nin released 2 of their biggest franchises already and besides Smash they need time to make more.

Past E3's showed games that were way further off. I think their new plan is to show games coming in the next few months.

Yes it can. You may have the disc but the disc can be made to stop working in the only machine it works in by license expiry. That disc doesn't protect you from DRM.

DPsx7 posted...
Without discs you're paying too much for nothing. As bad as Steam is, there's a reason they have to sell games for 75% off.

The game functions the same with or without a disc, however Steam games are cheaper and the DRM is easier to get around (what with all the data being on your PC, not a copy-protected disc).

My PS3 YLOD'd, so I decided Sony was no longer relevant to gaming. That makes just as much sense.

Special editions, not discs and manuals. Kinda pointless really.

Don't talk if you have no clue. That disc is going to work on my console or any replacement console to install and play the game. Digital is the only way it can be stolen without it being my fault.

Steam games are not cheaper considering you're getting way less product with hours more hassle.

Hardware failure is usually your fault for not maintaining it. (Not all cases, don't get me wrong.) My internet went down through no fault of my own so why doesn't that game work offline? Because Steam, which ruined PC as a gaming platform. Similar to how the Wii brought non-gamers to consoles, Steam was invented for those who wanted their hands held. Those too lazy to install and update games on their own. Then it became invasive by searching the drive for more games, blocking use of purchased titles, and let's just say Steam is worse than all the microtransactions you could count.

First off, you don't buy the cards. You get them free for playing games naturally.

Secondly, have you even read a manual since.... '08?

They're the most barebones pieces of shit ever. Manuals haven't been good since the PS2/NGC/OGXB era. Furthermore, discs are completely obsolete and redundant now. I'd be all for 100% physical copies of games, but now they only exist to install the game onto your HDD and ironically, as a form of DRM. Even though you have the game on your console's HDD, you can't play it without the disc unless you own the game digitally

I honestly don't know what you're talking about regarding not being able to play online or otherwise.

Microsoft's gone do what Microsoft does best.

MS is gonna come at us with stronger hardware than both Sony and Nintendo, a controller that both feels better and has a better layout than what's offered by Sony/Nintendo, a better online infrastructure that's more advanced and versatile in every single goddamned way, a backwards compatibility system that would make Sony bow their heads in shame, the potential to put everyone's high end 4KTVs to work in a manner PS4 Pro could only dream of... but still fuck it all up in a legendary, iconic, meme-worthy fashion that leaves us laughing at their expense for years to come.

You're kidding right? 4K is pretty much useless right now so any extra power isn't going towards anything useful. (No, I'm not buying a Pro.) The controller is no contest - DS4 wins. Anything with an asymmetrical layout needs to be disposed of. I even got a 8bitdo controller in case I don't like the Switch layout. Online is the same. BC is nice to have because I do go back to the classics once in a while but it shouldn't be a priority and definitely not a replacement for new content.

Honestly after seeing what they've been doing recently I don't expect much at all from M$. Never did though. I can only play so much of the 2 genres they support. I need the variety that JP based consoles offer.

Actually physical is cheaper because of price drops.

And depending on where you get. Like, on base, no tax. Or when they have the buy 2 get one free/half off sales.

Switching to all-digital would lose any of the companies a lot of customers and money. Having only certain things digital is fine, I guess. But I also agree that people wouldn't want to have to pay more. Because nobody wants to have to buy the games & multiple storage devices. When they could just buy the physical copy and that's all...

Companies may hate it but the advantages discs offer are too much for us to give up. Buying/selling used, trading, or insurance that it can't be taken away like digital content can. Seeing the examples used above, companies HAVE to know that going all digital will be suicide. I mean M$ never recovered and their biggest threat was no used games.

With that said digital has a use to bring us smaller games that would otherwise not see release. There's room for both here.

I hope they wait. I still have a handful of PS3 games to play, plus a ton on PS4.

Nah, all digital won't stick. There are various reasons like the cost of storage, ISP or bandwidth limits, rural areas of the world without reliable connections, or the millions like myself who will not give up on physical formats (disc or carts). The Go and Ouya are proof we don't want all digital. Multiple stores like Limited Run Games show there's a market for it too. Then because digital costs just as much as physical there's no incentive to switch. Actually physical is cheaper because of price drops.

The thing to remember is M$ already tried to bully the market into doing what the company wants and they paid the price. As long as we have the money companies need, WE call the shots.
