He didn't misapply anything because the Supreme Court had not ruled on the specific matter at the time. He did it only as a response to the gay marriage ruling that wasn't related to shopkeepers in any way.

The guy put out a sign twice. First in protest of gay marriage being allowed(what TC linked to thinking it was about the bakery thing). More recently he put out a sign because now he thinks he can bar gays.

There's a few reasons. Someone might find two dudes hot so they decide to pair them together because that would be even better.
Gay relationships aren't accepted in some places, so pairing two dudes together is "wrong" which makes it more interesting.
Some people just like shipping and will pair people off regardless of sex and orientation just because they think they'd go well together.
