Because despite all that editorialized nonsense you just spouted, he did in fact do more for peace than Obama ever did.

Enjoy thinking about that while you're trying to sleep tonight ;)

Are you gonna answer my question now?

No, no of course you aren't. Because you know you can't.

Work on some literature on the side. I been writing some poetry, it's not good at all, but it's my own style, so I enjoy it.

Stay true to yourself because at the end of the day, you will be the only one you are trying to impress.

I definitely try to use my brain on the side, but the immense pressure from school and fierce competitiveness were the true motivators for myself to unlock the real power of my brain. It's simply impossible to replicate outside of school.

There are a bunch of writing competitions, although I guess that would maybe influence you to not stay true to yourself. Do you need monetary compensation for your competitions, or would the reward of doing well in the competition (getting like top 3 or something like that) be enough?

Maybe we can start up monthly competitions on CE if just the competition without some sort of physical reward is enough?

That actually sounds like a cool idea, and I'm down to do it. But I know it won't ignite the fire under me like the fear of getting below an A in a class.

The essays I wrote in college often involved reading numerous literary sources in regards to economics and using them as sources for either support or counter arguments for your overall thesis. If we could something like that going then it would be really nice.

Yeah, I understand.

I am probably not the best when it comes to writing papers like that, but we can still do stuff like that. Make it a May competition.

Let's plan something.

>Software engineer
>Can't find job that requires critical thinking

Try reading my entire post. It's not as glamorous as you think it is.

The interviews though. That's a different story. That requires immense critical thinking.

What isn't, your job or software engineering? Don't be one of these guys on CE that assumes because you personally do fuck all at work that all jobs are like that

I know a lot of people in the industry, and a lot of them agree with me that it's nowhere near as stimulating as college.

I never said I'm not doing anything at work. I'm probably working 90% of the time while I'm there, but it's not difficult work.

What makes a great software engineer isn't your critical thinking ability, it's being an effective communicator and working well within your team.

And this is why you wouldn't make a good software engineer.

Poor communication.

I'm sure, as a software engineer, you don't need me to tell you there's companies and jobs out there that require critical thinking

I said it doesn't require a lot of critical thinking. There is a degree of critical thinking when debugging production failures across multiple apps, but that isn't the majority of your work. The majority of work often involves building endpoints.

Have you heard the quote by Isaac Newton, "If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants."

A lot of the difficult work in software engineering has already been solved. Modern day software engineers essentially use a bunch of tools that have already been built and combine them to make something new.

Companies build their products using popular frameworks like Spring, Rails, Django, etc. for this very reason. There's no need to rebuild the wheel.

Even with hot new topics like machine learning. There already a bunch of machine learning libraries already built which abstract away the difficult math.

There are definitely difficult software engineering jobs out there, but they make up very little of the total number of jobs. The majority of software engineering jobs you'll find involve doing CRUD work by writing endpoints on an established framework. However what is critical is ensuring that there is effective planning prior to working on certain endpoints in order to not bottleneck other teammates. In addition, code reviews are quite essential to provide a consistent and readable code base for new engineers. There is a degree of critical thinking involved in these areas, but it is nowhere near as stimulating as college. Your average google or facebook engineer will be doing CRUD work involving endpoints.

can you give us an example of a task you would have to do at your job

write scripts to migrate data, implement CRUD endpoints, design some basic objects, DRY up code, etc.

Getting to the point where this type of work is mundane takes an immense amount of self-discipline and studying, but once you're there you kind of stagnate, and regress in all other areas including critical thinking.

God damn I was such a great writer. I can barely write for shit now, and I often struggle to come up with articulate sentences.

It's seriously crazy how mind-numbing 99% of jobs are. I'm working as a software engineer for a prestigious company, and from an outside perspective it's considered to require immense critical thinking, but that's simply not the case. Compared to school, I use very little brain power. Most of it is pretty mundane and quite simple compared to actual school work.

The brain truly rots if you don't use it.

You gotta adjust as you go along. So many freshman do all that crap you said and get academic probation after a semester. Some don't even turn it around the second time and lose their aid and leave. If your major is hard, you won't be doing any of that anyway, especially towards the end.

Lol. If you know how to manage your time you can do that stuff and do well in school. I did computer science and did really well. Studied for a few hours everyday during weekdays, and had fun on weekends unless I had a midterm or project to work on.

so much free time, only stress is during midterms and finals week, tons of people your age who are eager to socialize and make friends, big ass beautiful campus, dorm life is fun af.

Partying is way better in college than in the grown up world. Going from frat to frat drinking free booze and meeting all these chicks who aren't just there to attention whore. Compare that with shitty grown up world partying where it's all about who can flex the most cash and value.
