Under the new approach, one lucky winner will take home the six-figure cash prize every quarter, with as many as 10 people getting Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedans or $40,000 each, President Scott Kirby said in a memo to employees Friday. The program includes smaller awards as well. Workers need perfect attendance to participate. And the airline has to hit its performance targets.

We believe that this new program will build excitement and a sense of accomplishment as we continue to set all-time operational records that result in an experience that our customers value, Erin Benson, a spokeswoman for the Chicago-based carrier, said in an email.

The prize drawings are a sharp break from the past, when the airline would pay broad-based employee bonuses of as much as $300 a quarter if it hit certain on-time operational measurements, said Craig Symons, president of Uniteds flight dispatchers union. For some employees, he said, a chance at a new Mercedes apparently isnt as nice as a small-but-steady stream of cold, hard cash.

So instead of getting cash you can use, you might get a new car that you can't afford to keep. Clearly a well thought out system that employees would love.

Not all penguins live on Antarctica.

But the object (i.e. the subject of the story) was in Antarctica?

Yes. Though it's an island off the Peninsula of Antarctica. So it's not really that big of an area being found.

Hmm. Good point.

Also another fact about penguins that do live on Antarctica. They live on the edges of Antarctica simply because it's access to food and water. They can't live in the center of Antarctica, because there's absolutely nothing there.

Most of Antarctica is just empty and white.

https://www.cnet.com/news/nasa-satellite-reveals-penguin-supercolony-antarctica-adelie/

Researchers thought the overall Adlie penguin population had been in decline for decades, but they've now discovered a secret stash of the photogenic seabirds.

It all started in 2014 when Stony Brook University Professor Heather Lynch and NASA scientist Mathew Schwaller found evidence of guano stains in NASA satellite views of the Danger Islands. Where there is lots of poop, there are probably lots of penguins.

A 2015 expedition discovered a massive number of birds. The team counted them up with an assist from a quadcopter drone. The drone snapped photos of the island, which the team stitched together to get an accurate penguin count.

Pretty amazing what can be seen from space.

Failed Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore is asking supporters to donate to his legal defense fund in order that truth will "prevail against the unholy forces of evil."

In a message posted to Facebook, Moore indicated he'd raised $32,235 out of a goal of $250,000 for the fund, which was established to help the former Alabama chief justice fight a lawsuit filed by Leigh Corfman, one of the women who said Moore had sexual contact with her when she was a teenager. Corfman filed a defamation suit after the election, claiming Moore and his campaign defamed her by saying she was a liar and immoral.

Moore lost the December 2017 election to Doug Jones, who became the first Democratic Senator from Alabama in more than two decades. Just days before the election, the Employees' Retirement System Board of Control approved Moore's annual pension of $135,845 for his time as Chief Justice.

I can't believe he managed to drum up enough support to get $32K. People are far too willing to give their money away to people who are already pretty well off.

Interesting to note that in the AMA done by Bill Gates like 2 days ago he admits that his success was ultimately the result of luck, by having access to good education, family and peers, and that he wants these, as well as health care, to improve so that the world can be much more fair and progress faster.

A lot of people have all those things and aren't billionaires or even millionaires.

So what gives

Bill didn't give the stereotypical cop out that it was 100% all him and nothing could hold him back. A lot of people are born into better situations, access to more and better quality resources, even the ability to borrow money and try to make something or invest with it. Obviously this isn't what composes every single rich and/or successful person, but the stereotype exists because it's so many people. Once you're born into a powerful family, there's a good chance that wealth will be passed down. Bill wants his kids to get, iirc, nothing, and that their access to good education is all they need and the rest is up to them.

I remember reading a while back that Bill was planning on leaving his children 10 million as a small portion of his fortune. Do not know if that number if accurate, but it's likely safe to say that while his kids might not inherit his billion dollar fortune, they will be far ahead compared to other people of the same age.

No. They do not mean luck in suddenly finding yourself with a huge sum of money. They mean luck of being born into a good background that gives you advantages over other people. Good education, parents being stable financially, and even just meeting the right people at the right time are all things you cannot control but influence your ability to earn money.

Let's compare the two. There's no Constitutional Ammendment that says anyone has the right to marry or to have someone bake a cake for them. Gun ownership on the other hand is specifically granted as a right by the 2nd Ammendment.

And yeah, this. I had a lot of those, because there's absolutely no room for nuance on most of those questions.

Easy example is the first question I saw: "Oppression by corporations is more of a concern than oppression by governments."

My opinion is that it ultimately doesn't matter where it's coming from - oppression is oppression. If I click "disagree" because I don't exactly agree with that statement, the test will likely interpret it as me saying I think governmental oppression is worse than corporate oppression, which I don't agree with either. If I click "neutral/unsure" then the test will likely not move the meters in either direction.

Boom - my actual opinion doesn't have a choice here. So fuck this quiz.
