Yeah, it's not unlike starting with a later game in any series and then working backwards, you'll lose certain improvements, but because you're already used to the general flow of the game you'll get accustomed quickly.

I've started and stopped COUNTER/Weight about five times (they usually recommend starting there and then going back to the first season afterward). A show like that I have to be actively listening to, not just in the background while I'm doing something else, and it's just hard for me to have the time to dedicate to that.

You know the crazy thing is this game almost didnt come out

It released one day before 9/11. The JP release was scheduled a couple days later and was in fact canceled to avoid sensitive subject matter. If it had been scheduled to come out just one or two days later, our release might have been pulled too. It didnt get released there until much later, in a combo pack with the second game. This delayed release may have contributed to the smaller fanbase these games got in Japan, which may be why we havent seen any new games in a while.

tldr the terrorists killed Advance Wars

Anyone ever play the Japanese games? How do they stack up?

I have played Famicom Wars and Super Famicom Wars. There are several Game Boy Wars games too, which I havent played, but from what Ive seen, they play significantly different. FW and SFW are pretty close to what youre familiar with.

They dont have campaign modes, and between the 4 games that we did get, I think all of their maps are included in War Room or Versus modes so you can play them.

As far as game mechanics go, theyre pretty similar but feel slightly outdated in some ways. For example, if you load a transport unit, they cant move on the same turn. Or with airports/ports, you can only build new units on ones you owned at the start of the game, any others you capture are purely for healing/refueling. The units are mostly the same, with slight differences in effectiveness or movement here and there. APCs have machine guns. Famicom Wars doesnt have COs, but Super does. They have passive stat changes, but no CO Power to activate.

Couple reasons. Billy is definitely skilled at these games; he has verifiable Donkey Kong scores in the 900,000 range so scoring over a million would not be implausible for him and thus these scores on their face would not be that suspicious. Plus these scores have all been beaten by other players for several years so there was little reason to worry about debunking them compared to more recent, better scores

TopicWhat is the most oversaturated video game series next to Mario and Mega Man?
WazzupGenius00
04/05/18 1:32:03 PM

If being in the same universe is mandatory, you can't count any Battle Network and Star Force games for Mega Man: they take place in a separate continuity. But then allowing those opens up for possibilities like Dragon Slayer, or Megami Tensei, which each have 50+ entries but many separate continuities.

If we only count "same universe" games then Mega Man is probably still high up there. Sonic might actually have more than Mario if we count mobile games

I think theres some confusion because the last few remakes had orchestrated soundtracks in Japan but midi for the release here. Thats not whats happening here, the JP release also had the midi

Im not sure if an orchestrated version of this soundtrack was recorded yet, but even if it was, the precedent makes it pretty likely we wouldnt be getting it in our English release. Sugiyama is very strict about the use of his symphonic recordings now.

My understanding is that there are no stats

Yeah, even with with Retroarch, 4 would just immediately drop back to the game select menu after booting. I tried a few configurations, but got tired of carting the console back and forth between my PC and TV to test it after a few tries.

Its possible you got a bad dump of the rom. I remember I had some trouble with this one but I did manage to get it working.

Spent another hour or two fiddling with my Classic. Managed to get everything to at least boot with the exception of Fire Emblem 3 and 4. Not sure what the deal is there, might just be bad roms.

If youre using translation patches, check whether you were supposed to use a headered ROM or not. I think 4 was one I had to use the retroarch emulator for.

Alright, think I got everything important loaded onto the classic, minus a few that still have issues with the onboard emulation I guess?

There's a way to add retroarch emulation that covers pretty much all those games the base emulator can't handle, and you can set those games specifically to launch with that emulator instead with a pretty simple command line addition. Only downsides are like one extra frame of input lag, and while you can still use savestates, you can't rewind them.
