Still, Trump also repeated praise for Boris Johnson, who resigned this week as May's foreign minister and is seen as a power rival within her own conservative party.

"I said he'd be a great prime minister," Trump said. "He's been very nice to me. He's been saying very nice things about me as president. I think he thinks I'm doing a great job. I am doing a great job, that I can tell you, just in case you haven't noticed. Boris Johnson I think would be a great prime minister.

This makes me roll my eyes harder than anything else I've heard today.

Guys you know many Republicans are real people with real reasons for voting in the way they do, right?

This kind of talk isn't any different to me than the kind of dialogue trying to turn all liberals into Antifa boogeymen which you are calling out Red Sox for.

Yeah, duh.

"People like him" isn't all Republicans, nor did I say it was. There are plenty of republicans that don't act like this. Go ahead and point out in my post where I said otherwise so I can correct it while I can still edit, because that isn't what I meant. Thanks so much!

Your post isn't the main post I was responding to, to be fair. (Which was Lasa's)

I do think it's very easy to misinterpret what "people like him" is referring to exactly though. Basically my stance is to just avoid making statements that are dismissive as much as possible, and especially ones that are vague about who they're being dismissive of.

Fair enough!

But, again, at least what I was saying wasnt that. It was this specific reason is bs and you should stop falling back on it as a crutch for Trumps bad behavior.

ALSO my post doesnt even preclude Red Sox from having good reasons to vote Republican. Although I dont think he even voted for Trump IIRC.

My criticism is with how disingenuous this reasoning is for why Trump won. It is extremely common for never Trumpers and you hear Ben Shapiro in particular espouse it many times. Trump isnt Republicans fault! No sir, it had nothing to do with the toxicity of talk radio, years of fear mongering, embracing the tea party and killing off many moderates, hysteria amongst voters, latent racism or sexism within a small but sizable contingent of their voters etc etc etc.

No, it was because of Democrats! It was because of these forty moronic teenagers and their guy fawkes mask. It was this one woman in some no name school at Portland that said white people are dumb. It was this random bakery in San Francisco that sells cakes with penises on them.

It is a way of passing off their worst mistake onto the people who didnt even vote for him. Obviously republicans have good reasons for voting republicans. Democrats hurt my feelings and I need some warm milk is not one of them, and it deserves to be called out.

Sadly, Red Sox isn't even entirely wrong. The past two years have confirmed that Republican voters just care about the mean ol' Democrats being mean and nasty to them, but don't expect any retaliation for the way THEY act towards Democrats. Unfortunately, Dems are more mature and vote for reasons other than "fuck those guys", which is the whole reason we're in this mess.

I'm not saying he is wrong, but the issue with Red Sox insincere pearl clutching is that people like him will always find something to be triggered or outraged by. Antifa, new black panther party, immigrants, people that don't look like them, etc etc etc. It doesn't matter. It is very easy for a small insignificant group like antifa to be built up into some big boogy man because being afraid is what they want.

We could get rid of antifa tomorrow and some other idiotic group of like ten people could pop up wanting to ban Christmas and Red Sox would use that as justification to vote for the stack of children in a trench coat running for president.

I know this may be hard for certain people to understand, so how about this ELI5 version:

Your mommy tells you and your siblings you each need to go out and gather some carrots for dinner. You are the biggest so you have to gather 5 carrots for the family, while younger kids only need to get 2 or 3. This is for the whole family. Everyone does this so everyone can eat. No one is deficient in the number of carrots they need to get.

BUT your mommy also says you should probably get some carrots just for yourself, in case you get hungry. These are just carrots for you! You don't need to share these carrots with your brothers so you're free to get as many or as little as you want. She recommends at least 2 to hold yourself over.

You are so hungry that you get 4 carrots for yourself! But your brother only gets one. He wasn't hungry. So you go over to him and say "Great! Now we're all going to starve! I did all this work getting four carrots you slacker!" Except those carrots are just for you and you don't have to share. Your brother tries to correct you, but you throw everyones carrots on the floor, run out of the room, and go hug the bear that is outside in the woods.

That's sort of what's happening here.

Any just to further demonstrate how asinine this all is, here is the US budget in 2014:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_United_States_federal_budget

Here is foreign aid:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_foreign_aid

For those that are too lazy to click the link:
Budget was 3.02 trillion
Total foreign aid (all together) was 43.1 billion
Total military aid (all together for all countries) was 10.57 billion

Now lets look at how much foreign aid just Germany receives in a year. If you follow this link you can actually search by country:
https://explorer.usaid.gov/cd

If you click this you'll find Germany receives $5.5 million in TOTAL foreign aid. A country like Israel, meanwhile, receives over $3 billion. Almost all of our foreign aid goes to places like Israel and Egypt. Cut all foreign aid to Germany entirely, not just military, and you have enough for Trump to buy himself a couple of planes.

And, again, this ignores how important foreign aid is in shoring up US alliances and positioning ourself as a leader on global issues.

Just in case it isn't clear, Trump and his supporters are conflating two separate issues here. Direct and indirect funding of NATO.

The direct funding of NATO can be found here:
https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/topics_67655.htm?selectedLocale=en

No member of this pact is deficient in this funding. This funding goes towards shared interests of the alliance. The US pays 22% of this, per an agreement, and it is based on the countries total GDP. You will notice Germany pays 14% and France 10.5% even though our GDP is much better than theirs. This works in our advantage. We pay more but we can afford to pay even more than we do.

Any one who is beyond high school should understand why this alliance is beneficial to US interests.

Then there is indirect funding. This is funding a country pays towards its OWN defense. The benchmark is 2% and yes, many countries don't reach this amount. BUT this isn't really for NATO funding. It is just money spent on your own defense in case of a conflict breaking out. The reason the US is much much higher than everyone else (3.6% of GDP) has nothing to do with a failure of these other countries, but just because we spend so much of our own budget on defense. We could absolutely cut this if we wanted to without permission from any of the other countries.

People telling you otherwise are misleading you, either through ignorance or malice.

The Trump vs. Sanders thing is not as clear as you think. Sure, I prefer Trump, especially now that he's actually doing things and not just talking, but I did support them both, as both stood - or at least claimed to during the campaign - against the establishment, i.e. globalism. It's not so important to me whether globalism is undone by a left- or right-winger. But it seems it's the right that is actually doing it.

They're both against free trade, sure, but that doesn't mean he's against globalism.

For example, he is for NATO, for accepting refugees from the Syrian crisis, and for DACA and much more pro immigration in general just as a few examples I remember from the campaign.

I could be wrong as I do not read your topics all that frequently, but these sorts of things are antithetical to your way of thinking (if I had to guess). He's also socially progressive in about every way and I don't think I've seen you ever support a single one of those positions.

You can say "it doesn't matter if done by a left or right winger" but you agree with a right winger on just about everything and a left winger on a single issue.

Also I would delineate even further between Streaming Pewdiepie (himself) and YouTube performance video Pewdiepie (a character)

But also I realize that I am an adult making this decision, and his content is made to appeal to a young audience, so on that level he can fuck off publicly using slurs anywhere.

Old Pewdiepie, maybe. All of his new videos aren't even that any more. Sure, he used to act up how SPOOKY and SCARY Five Nights was or whatever, but he doesn't play games any more. Not in a long time, at least, and not on his youtube channel. He just talks about stuff. "Stupid Twitch thots", memes, random news stuff he complains about, etc etc etc.

It isn't a character anymore, and I'm not sure it has been for a while.

(I never paid attention to him until he became the alt rights favorite youtuber so I don't know exactly when the transformation occurred)

DrDisrespect is certainly a character, but Pewdiepie (at least modern Pewdiepie) I would say is definitely not.

I view DrDisrespect as sort of like a MirandaSings, where it is someone doing a character on Youtube/Twitch that isn't necessarily reflective of themselves. It gets murky here, I agree.

Jakyl made a point of "it is ok for people to like Pewdiepie because content is content and I still enjoy (notable horrible person) Chris Benoit's performances".

My counter is that for other people that have done bad things, you can separate out their art from themselves (well, if you can do that - I don't begrudge anyone who can't). It exists separately from them, and you can view it without endorsing who they are as a person.

Pewdiepie, who obviously isn't as bad as Chris Benoit, isn't the same. His "art" or "product" here is himself. Him using a racial slur necessarily taints the rest of his content because that is just him. His content, quite literally here, is himself and his views.

There's a difference here.

Chris Benoit is playing a character. He isn't being "Chris Benoit as himself" out there - it is a performance art. I don't begrudge anyone enjoying Seven even though Kevin Spacey is in it because he isn't Kevin Spacey in the film. Mel Gibson using racial slurs doesn't mean that Martin Riggs is a racist.

Pewdiepie is being Pewdiepie. What he is selling is himself. Pewdiepie using racial slurs means that Pewdiepie is a racist. You can enjoy Lethal Weapon without endorsing Mel Gibson's views. You cannot enjoy Pewdiepie's channel without at least, in part, endorsing his views.

I mean that's partially in response to the Pewdiepie controversy and advertisers fleeing.

BUT Pewdiepie already has more than enough money than he'd ever need. And he still has the same platform, with more subs and views than just about anyone. His message is still being consumed. I don't want YouTube to censor him or kick him off the platform or anything like that, mind you. But it is disappointing that he is still looked up to and people want to listen to what he has to say, given what has happened.

The 8values just looks much more accurate, particularly with its placement of Vlado relative to the rest of us.

There is something fundamentally wrong with a test that has Vlado as a liberal, further to the left of Obama on every metric. It simply isn't asking the right questions or tabulating them in a way that makes sense if it is coming up with results like that.

It's like a bear detector that picks up every animal. Sure, it scans polar bears, black bears, sloth bears as bears, but then it also scans dogs, cats, fish, and a pair of shoelaces as bears. And you're going "I don't know what you're complaining about - it scanned all the bears as bears!"

You can easily shift the average to the left on one of these through question selection. Like I mentioned before, having a bunch of questions like do you consider your race to be superior to others is designed to do this. You could also do the reverse and push people to the right by including stuff like people should not be allowed to own property.

Mm. That's a good point.

My main issue is where they are placing the actual candidates, because they don't match up at all. Their questions aren't always great like you point out, and seem to be forcing people to the left with a series of layup questions.

They don't organize things right, at all.

If you think Vlado belongs closer to Bernie Sanders than Trump, I don't know what to tell you. Like he's almost on top of Sanders, and no where near any of the republicans. He's more liberal than Obama. You are intentionally ignoring pieces of information. You aren't to the right of Vlado, for one. You should know this if you've read his topics over the year.

I really like the 8values one, it asks essential questions, and the most essential one is question 53: We must think long-term, beyond our lifespan.

Whoever answers "No" to that should not have any say in politics, ever.

This is really interesting to me, because I am not positive Vlado and I agree on any other question on that 8values site. But I completely agree this is one of the most essential questions, and I answered the same way he did.

Although, honestly, I am not entirely sure who would answer that differently now that I think about it.

I took it again and I'm barely in the top left quarter now. The test is generally useless. So many questions are stupidly phrased, so many double negatives.
https://politicalcompass.org/analysis2?ec=-4.5&soc=0.82

Thanks to @Vlado for doing this!

I think this pretty definitively proves my point that it is poorly constructed. Vlado is far and away the most right wing, nationalistic person here. He should not be left of Obama and Clinton, and close to Sanders. This has to have some sort of ulterior motive. Either "you're too left and out of touch" if it is put together by people on the right or "look how right all politicians are and how left you are - we need a new more liberal party!" if it is put together by people on the left.

Either way, not a good measure. The values test seems to be putting together much more accurate results.

Anita Sarkeesian basically confirming herself as a bigoted monster

how did she do this and toward whom is she bigoted

The major reason was her being given a panel at VidCon, and some YouTube news people like MudaneMatt, Dave Cullen, and Sargon of Akkad showed up at the panel to listen. Because those people have often reported on idiotic stuff Anita has done and they sat in the front row, Anita felt intimidated and then decided to lash out, calling Sargon names like "shithead" and "garbage human". Then later that same convention, she unleashed a tirade on another anxious guy just for daring to share his experiences, all because his point of view clashed with Anita's ability to play the victim card.

Then the people in charge of the convention took her side despite her breaking rules by publicly defaming an audience member, because they took her words about the intimidating people in question being "serial harassers" completely at face value (when all these people did was weigh in on her statements and ration out why they disagreed), despite in their own words, remaining "blissfully unaware" of the situation.. And THEN Anita doubled down by basically saying that "I'm a woman in a deeply misogynistic culture" as an excuse for defaming someone - even if that were the case (which is at worst EXTREMELY debatable - she also literally said "women are 2nd class citizens in their own country - which is laughable about any Western nation), that still does not excuse her actions. Add in an undercurrent of misandry in her body of work and ye gods, I'd say she's more bigoted than Trump.

Anita said of the guy that she called a "garbage human" that he "literally made a career out of discrediting and mocking women", which, if you look at his content (this is "Sargon of Akkad" by the way) is a blatant lie. If anything Anita is self-projecting herself here.

Oh and right before she put out a video called "Manufacturing a Muslim Menace" which was so ridiculous. It basically came down to "any instance of a white guy killing a brown guy comes with unfortunate implications" (even using one famous Indiana Jones scene in a montage of examples), and "Muslim terrorism is a fabrication of the media". Oh. My. God.

I hope I'm not turning into Ulti!

We had this conversation in the politics topic before.

I do not believe a child of a less than fully developed mind and body has the necessary tools to understand sex and sexuality at young ages. Thus, I feel children should not be put into households they cannot properly understand yet and may cause confusion within the child, ostracision from peers, and feelings of fear, depression, and/or dissatisfaction due to such situations.

I believe if a same sex couple wishes to adopt a child that the child should be 13 years or older and also willingly sign off on being adopted by the couple.

I believe that because I believe that the protection and well being of the child is utmost and paramount in the situation.

I get it, because I feel the same way about straight adoption.

I think a lot of people do not like to see just where they truly are on a chart.

Like I think a lot of you want to feel you are not so extreme and are center, when you truly are.

I also think people very often misrepresent where they truly are politically in their arguments because they think it gives them clout or credibility.

I am very happy with where I am on the chart.

The fact I am further to the left of Sanders is insane. There is no issue where he was right of where I was.

The fact that Obama 2012 is essentially the same as Romeny/Jeb/Rubio and close to Trump is also insane. There are substantial differences between the two parties in 2008, 2012, 2016, and there will be again in 2020.

There are plenty of other places that score these things, and none of them have Obama as a Republican:

I don't think they scored the candidates right, though. According to this I am way to the left of Bernie, while listening to his propositions I always thought he was to the left of me. Meanwhile Obama and Hillary are basically republicans while there are plenty of differences between them and say, even someone like Jeb!

I do think its score of me is fairly accurate, but I question how they plopped in these candidates on the way they did.

Oh, Corrik is right, thank you.

In 2008 in was pretty close to center. In 2012 he is high in the upper right, close to where both Hillary (and Trump) are. Hillary is in the upper right both in 2008 and 2016.

The commentary also rails against the uniparty and how both parties are the same and how Bernie betrayed his ideals etc etc etc. It sounds like a far left unhinged rant. Or maybe a far right unhinged rant? I have a hard time discerning between those two at times for some reason.

This is where the us presidential candidates landed on the spectrum.

Lol what the fuck is that?

Apparently I'm further left than Sanders and Stein!

(Obviously not)

If you check back to 2008/2012 they basically have Barack Obama almost identical to where Trump is.

Their analysis (the actual write ups) is truly bizarre, too.

Your Political Compass

Economic Left/Right: -3.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.21

That sound about right, honestly. I am definitely more liberal on social issues than I am on economic ones.
