A more thorough quote from the article:

In February this year the influential OECD think tank said a universal credit system, like that being introduced in the UK, would work better than a basic income in Finland. Universal credit replaces several benefit payments with a single monthly sum.

The study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said income tax would have to increase by nearly 30% to fund a basic income. It also argued that basic income would increase income inequality and raise Finland's poverty rate from 11.4% to 14.1%.

In contrast, the OECD said, universal credit would cut the poverty rate to 9.7%, as well as reduce complexity in the benefits system.

It's almost as if there are different ways to implement a UBI system, and some might not work as well as others.

this is kind of the dilemma that every sitcom has:

- group of friends/associates wants X
- they go a while in the show without getting X and longing for it
- they finally get X
- Now the motivations for the character need to be re-written & all new conflicts feel contrived

it's why the big bang theory got weird when all the nerds starting getting poon on the reg, why the office got boring when Jim and Pam got together and started cranking out kids, etc

This is why Seinfeld was so good. They had none of that crap, aside from maybe one episode of Jerry and Elaine weirdness that didn't last.

A lot of people are missing the point. It's not about seniority. It's that a lot of lower paying jobs offer little to no paid time off, no matter how long they've been at a company. And that's for all types of time, including sick time.

The point is that why should these things be available only to some people and not everyone? Just because historically that's the way we've done things doesn't mean it is right. PTO is not something that should be considered a luxury, same as health care.

The single most bullshit component was the lack of forcing hospitals to advertise their prices, followed shortly by not allowing people to buy insurance over state lines.

The two most practical things you could add to ANY bill, and for some reason they weren't in the ACA.

The first one would be a mess because our insurance system is a mess. The second one doesn't make sense because even if you could buy insurance over state lines, that insurance doesn't have a network in your state. The reason why insurers have monopolies in many markets has nothing to do with not being able to sell insurance across state lines.

I hate guns. I think they're dumb as shit and only came about as a way for humans to murder each other quicker. I see no reason why we need them in today's society.

So if a bad guy breaks into your home with a huge knife, you don't need a gun? What if he has a gun? What are you going to do, reason with him?

See, if he comes in with a gun, I'll give him my stuff so he doesn't kill me. I also don't live in fear of people breaking into my home cause I'm not a paranoid person, you know.

Maybe you should stop being afraid of people.

What if he doesn't want your stuff? What if he wants your wife, children, or even you? Being prepared isn't paranoia. Being unprepared is negligence.

I think part of it is there aren't a ton of dishes that would appeal to mainstream tastes. Everyone I know who has tried adobo, pancit, or lumpia has loved them, but there's not a whole lot else. I think in bigger cities Filipinos are having luck with fusion cuisine restaurants, but for whatever reason there just aren't that many restaurants out there otherwise.

But just because there aren't that many restaurants doesn't mean Filipino cuisine isn't lauded. It's just that you have to go to people's homes to find Filipino food, rather than restaurants. I have friends who want to go to Filipino parties just because of the food.

It actually fits into their narrative of "personal responsibility". If they villainize women who get abortions and say "they knew the risk", they don't have to care if anything bad happens to them. Or worse, they'll think the women deserve it.
