The previous summer I was in a pretty dark depression, very suicidal and hopeless. Fewer friends than ever, my parents had just divorced but dumped me at my grandparents. This had been a prolonged issue, and it reflected in my grades as I slipped low enough to lose my scholarship (sub-3.0). Pretty much the only way I could attend college without large loans and my family would kill me if they knew. And of course there's the whole bi/trans thing coupled with a deeply conservative family, with me finally deciding to be open that summer about it online. I managed to appeal the scholarship loss on basis of extraordinary circumstances, and won: I'd be given the scholarship for one more semester, with full reinstatement if I did well enough. Well enough implied turning my cumulative GPA to 3.0+. Which I didn't realize at the time: I thought it was semester. I buckled down that semester. I had a rough start but ended with a 3.6 that semester - 3 As, 2 Bs. One of those As was from me acing a final: if I didn't ace the final I would've had a B. After we moved closer to my grandparents she ended up getting pretty close to me. The kind of cat that would sleep with you or jump up on your stomach when you lied down. Once I went off to uni and started spending weeks up there she apparently started missing me. (She was getting old and for some reason the others in my family hated her so I guess she missed being doted on.) She was practically hugging my arm one weekend I came back. It was also like she could sense my depression since after the first spring semester I was heading to a really dark place mentally. Whenever it was particularly bad she would somehow wind up cuddling with me. Probably coincidence but part of me always wondered. I miss her. When my parents divorce my sister took her, gave her to a friend... Which was dumb. The cat was old, frail, and declawed (not my choice but that's another issue for another time). Said friend kept her cats outside. ... Odds are she's dead now, not that I'll ever know for sure. The cat was like 20yo though. Probably anything would've killed her: old age, coyotes, a car, the other cats, a dog.... Who knows. It's been almost two years since I've seen her. ... When I get out on my own I'll probably end up getting a gray cat or two. Kinda almost replacing her it feels like, which when you put it that way it sounds kinda scummy. But I guess part of it's like... No one really likes me anymore. Or really ever. At least in real life. Before my parents divorced at least I had the cats and my sister, but now I am dumped at my grandparents and have neither. Just a bunch of guilt trips from my grandparents, reminding me how much of a burden my existence is on people. If I at least had a cat like before, it would make things just a little easier. That one piece of unconditional love that I can't get anywhere else, that makes me feel like I'm valued. It would soften the blow and at least provide some iota of constancy in my life. God I wish my dorms at uni would let me keep pets that weren't fucking fish of all things. *Sigh* Sorry for the mindless ramble. I guess I just really miss my cats. They were practically the only reason I ever came home from university. Well.
