My body is just craving sugar so bad after 2 days without drinking any pop or energy drinks or sweetened tea

Years ago when I very significantly cut back on drinking soda(now it's rare I do today), I found the big drink I discovered which enabled me to really cut back was discovering La Croix. Or for that matter, any other flavored carbonated water out there that's sold. And also switching to drinking cane sugar sodas over high fructose corn syrup sodas, was another thing that made me feel a lot better. It's worth it to look for those stores selling imported Mexican Coke or other sodas, since for whatever reason unlike the US, they are sold with cane sugar in the soda instead in that country. I prefer cane sugar sodas over HFCS soda, since my stomach doesn't feel so bloated after drinking the cane sugar type. I used to worry like you I'd never successfully cut back, but I managed to do so sometime in the mid or late 2000s. Good luck to you, I hope you're able to accomplish that goal.

And as for other things like ice cream, I often substituted lower fat and lower sugar things like fruit bars. Will still eat ice cream from time to time, of course. Good luck, hope you're able to accomplish this overall goal. Like others said, try to eat some fruits and vegetables at times as well. Even if its just fruit that has sugar in it naturally, like bananas or pineapple. For carrots, I know what often encourages me to eat that is to combine that with having a garlic hummus dip for them.

In Chicago, there used to be a news website called DNAInfo, but it pathetically got shut down last year by its owner after writers in a different city than Chicago(NYC) voted to unionize. Some of the writers are getting back together and forming a replacement for that site later this year(called Block Club), and I wouldn't mind if by some chance I could be hired there to take occasional pictures for that site? Who knows, maybe someday applying for some job will work out for me. We'll see....

Cool, I always wished I were more artistic. I learned that a camera does not a photographer make. I didn't have trouble when I went job-searching, but my method of being an unemployable loser slumming for bottom-of-the-barrel jobs may not be the recommended approach. In any case, I wish you luck. Seems like an awfully difficult thing to get into, but if you can make a hobby into a career it sounds like a nice way to go.

Honestly, I'm at the point where it no longer matters if my next job is bottom of the barrel so to speak(i.e. dishwasher, fast food place, janitor, etc). I think for too many years I was way too picky about not wanting to apply for jobs at certain places, and of course for certain types of jobs. Looking back, I'm wishing I had applied for even those low level, undesirable jobs. My aunt said that to me years ago, and I still kick myself that I didn't take that advice to heart sooner. I'm still strongly against the idea of being a security guard somewhere, or applying for a police/state trooper type job though.

Heh, Dumpster, I came into this topic to proudly say I'm currently traveling to the states for an interview. It took me 4 years to get back to this chance of an engineering job in the states, where I worked my way through a number of odd jobs, from dishwashing and cooking to chip manufacturing, to math tutoring, to getting an inventory collector position with the government to now interviewing for a software development position.

I can't win. There's too much competition and I'm not a professional person. I can't survive in the corporate world. So I play to my strengths and try to get as personal as possible. But that barely worked, only once when I hounded the chip design company to high hell, calling them and going up to the company place directly to give them my resume. Didn't last more than a couple months there anyways. After that, it was pure luck. My last few job acquisitions boiled down to who I knew. And this interview coming up is because of a friend of mine and I proved to him I could do the job because incidentally, I've done that kind of work at an internship before.

I wish I could share some of the luck I have with you man. All I can say is that you can't do it alone, find people to talk to and to work with. Even if it's free. I did this for a year at a lab, and truth be told, it did give me opportunities, just not ones I was willing to take on.

Agreed about what you said in that post. I probably will need to learn to network with others, which is something historically I haven't been good at. I'm sure someday, I will have a job of some sort somewhere. Worse comes to worst, maybe I will just sign up for an art fair and sell prints of my photos there. :)

It's a user fee. The idea is have a service paid for by the people who actually use the service.
That's how the roads were supposed to be funded, before the Highway Trust Fund ended up raided just like the Social Security Trust Fund, and pretty much every other pile of public money with "trust fund" in the name.

Funny this was mentioned. Since in several states before Illinois finally passed such a constitutional amendment, there were passed constitutional amendments in other states over state transportation funding called a transportation lockbox funding amendment. Basically, it established a trust fund that couldn't be raided for any other state government purposes, except strictly for road funding.

At that time looking back when it was on the ballot, I only voted against it since I wasn't sure how well this would cover non-driving forms of transportation that are still important(i.e. bicycling infrastructure, trains, buses, etc). I think since that has passed, this amendment has worked very well. And looking back if this vote did occur over again, I would've voted in favor of it.

For this topic JUST on the thought of applying for jobs, almost a C. It's ridiculous how many I've applied for in recent years, and still don't seem to get hired at regardless of how much I try(sometimes repeatedly at a few places). I do still want to find another job, but with certain jobs it's BS that they want ____ amount of past job experience doing ____ job. And if you haven't had that experience in the past, it almost feels like a (near impossible, unless one is to white lie on an application and I'd rather not do that, though deep down sometimes I've wondered if I should have...) catch 22 question of how do you gain that? It almost seems like it may as well be an impossible task, to do. I almost just from NOW ON don't want to bother with online job postings, and hope for the best applying for those rare job postings that aren't posted online, and hope something works there. I've applied at too many job openings posted on some website, to yet again and again bother with job openings that are posted online.

No wonder I've often thought deep in my head about instead just signing up for art fairs, and selling prints of my photos I've taken instead. And to (almost) never again apply for jobs, since it's almost too much of a PITA to do. I feel convinced when I look at websites of people being annoyed about applying for jobs(i.e. just look at all the people whining/bitching on ANY indeed.com message board about how annoying it is to apply for jobs), that applying for certain ones is more a waste of time than anything(especially openings that are posted online). Don't get wrong I still do apply with some job openings I see from time to time, just that I've gotten to the point of saying 'fuck bother applying' at just a few certain places I've gotten rejected at numerous times over the years.

So are you a photographer, then? Sounds like a headache. Have you tried looking at different types of jobs that would suit you?

Yeah, I mainly take pictures on my free time, as a hobby if I'm not applying for jobs. I wouldn't mind getting hired by some lesser known news website(and not via one of the major 2 newspapers in Chicago, those papers are too greedy to the point they've laid off photographers among other positions) to take photos, but not sure which places would hire me for that. In Chicago, there used to be a news website called DNAInfo, but it pathetically got shut down last year by its owner after writers in a different city than Chicago(NYC) voted to unionize. And where sadly, too many employers don't give you a fair chance even if you would do good working a certain job. Heck I volunteer at several places, and I still am annoyingly unable to land a job.

No wonder I've often thought deep in my head about instead just signing up for art fairs, and selling prints of my photos I've taken instead. And yes even when I've had others look at my resume and I did work on it, I still always struggle to ever get a lot of job interview chances. I wish those who have luckily been employed forever at some job(s) could really understand how annoying the process of applying for jobs is, if you don't have a lot of past job experience. :( I'm convinced many will never understand the difficulty of finding a job, especially if you're coming from the background(like me) of not having a lot of past job experiences and more volunteer activities.

In short, the process of applying for jobs(especially the online posted job openings that get(probably) hundreds if not thousands, of job applicants) is such a painful and annoying process that can go fuck itself. I wish I wasn't so darn horrible at doing that, since there is NOT a thing in life that I've found to be more painfully annoying than applying for jobs. I do keep trying, and I wish some companies would give hiring new employees a chance that may not necessarily have had tons of past job experience before being hired. And that may have had more volunteer experiences, vs. past jobs. Ranting done for now.

What the hell? I never even knew breastaurants were a thing. That's why living in the UK sucks!

And on that note, I wish more fish and chips places existed in the US! I went to Ireland and Northern Ireland last summer, and LOVED how there were so many 'chippy' businesses out there. I also wouldn't mind if more British food items like banger sausage, could become easier to find in the US. I LOVED eating banger sausage, every morning at my Dublin hotel on that trip.

I wouldn't feel too bad, about the lack of 'breastaurants' in the UK. Went to a couple of those in the past(especially Tilted Kilt), and most of them are meh IMO. They're basically glorified sports bar chains, with female servers showing off skin, and food that starts to all feel mediocre after a while. Hooters is okay due to the fact the food is a little better there(vs. Tilted Kilt), and I suspect you'll get your chance to go to a Hooters someday if you visit the US. I am surprised Hooters never quite expanded to the UK, myself.

I haven't been to Hooters in a while, and there aren't any other breastaurants nearby.

I think people are too harsh on the place; the food is pretty standard for fast casual. I never will forget the time a dumb bitch waitress let my friend order crab legs and then informed him, as she placed them on the table, that they didn't have any of the tools to open them. It was sort of funny, but holy shit at the bad customer service.

Funny thing is that Hooters is now opening 'fast casual' restaurants where the servers don't dress up in the traditional Hooter girl uniforms showing skin, called Hoots. Allegedly I've heard is that it's because sales are down at traditional Hooters locations, hence the company testing out Hoots locations. You can still get alcohol at Hoots including beer, allegedly. Never been to Hoots, so I don't know all the differences beyond the main one I've read about, is that the female servers don't show off their skin.

I'm surprised there aren't any Hooters locations in Canada. That's really weird, don't know what to tell you on that. Are none of the competing 'breasterant' chains(i.e. Twin Peaks, Tilted Kilt, etc) in Canada? I thought at least one of those other chains might be, but not sure.

I always thought it was amusing back when I used to go to Illinois State University, discovering(in Bloomington, IL) that there was a ripoff chain called Show-Me's. As you can guess from the name and the state it references(Missouri, the 'show me' state), they're based in the Saint Louis area. But do have locations all over the Midwest.

It was a dumb post in general. There would literally be no difference in sales.

That's what I was thinking. That any effects in alcohol sales from fully legalized pot, won't be too significant. Plus I suspect those who drink wine a lot, probably aren't the likely type of person who would smoke pot anyway. Or use anything beyond edibles to help them with certain small medical issues, at most.

Which seem to be among the very rare times, I've seen an anti-smoking ad that was effective. I'd also add the Yul Brunner(sp? he was an actor in a lot of old Western movies) one he did just before he died, as being effective as well.

That would completely kill the point of amazon.

They already are entering that field in a way, with Amazon Books stores opening up in some places. In Chicago there's an Amazon Books on Southport Ave(south of Addison, and not far from Wrigley Field. in the space where Mystic Celt bar used to be) among others in different parts of the US, and last year they bought Whole Foods. I won't be surprised, if Amazon makes more retailer acquisitions. Not sure how true the rumors are that they were considering buying Target, but I did hear one person write an article speculating that Amazon was going to do that this year. Not so sure they'll do that, but I am confident the retailers they acquire won't only be Whole Foods.

I've read that in the US, we overbuilt shopping centers and malls more than other countries did(i.e. in Europe). I have no doubt that many of the more successful malls and shopping centers will remain, but that many that are dying or struggling as of now eventually won't make it.

Maybe you live near the one Sears location where the owner cares. Almost every Sears I have been to in the past ten years has seemed like absolutely no one there gives a crap about the store. Twenty-five years ago, walking into a Sears felt similar to walking into a JCPenney. Today, walking into a Sears feels more like walking into a Kmart. That's bad enough for Kmart, but even worse for a place that's "supposed" to be classier than Kmart.

Sadly, that's the strategy of the guy who took over both Kmart and Sears, Eddie Lambert. Not doing crap to invest even a penny in their stores(other than rarely put up new signage), and quietly getting rid of departments such as video games has been killing Sears Holdings. I've read a lot of vendors have quietly decided to no longer sell Sears Holdings merchandise, due to how greatly struggling that company is.

Mark my words, I think we will see a liquidation of all their remaining stores if not by later this year, within a year or 2. The fact all the Canadian Sears stores just shut down, is a warning that it probably soon will occur with all remaining US Sears stores.

For most years in Chicago, yes. Winters like last year, are honestly pretty rare where you don't get a lot of snow, and a lot of above average temperatures. Usually you do get numerous noticeable snowfalls, but that the number of days where wind chills get below zero or to minus 10s(rarely) aren't excessive. Heck, I remember a handful of days this past February(in 2017), where the high got to something like the mid to high 50s or the low 60s! Most winters it never gets as warm as that, and any days above the 30s or 40s is rare.

And ugh, don't get me started on how too many liquor stores in Chicago are sketchy looking and seem ripoff like(for prices) in how they operate.

You don't fuck with Binny's?

I wasn't referring to Binny's. You know what I mean! The type of liquor store that often are usually more convenient than a Binny's to travel to, but often look mediocre and sketchy inside, and don't have very good prices. You know, the type of liquor store you only go to in a pinch if you're desperate.

And I really like Binny's, myself. In fact, I wish I didn't have to drive to get to the closest one. Although I've heard talk that one might finally open near where I live, soon.

Haha I know what you mean. I should've asked if you're located near a Binny's; I know that feel. Hyde Park has a couple non-skeevy liquor stores thankfully.

I recall when I was down there, I liked Kimbark Liquors. Also, I do recall noticing a Binny's Express, that was on 53rd Street. Maybe there are some other liquor stores down there, I'm forgetting about. I should try the new Jolly Pumpkin brewpub and restaurant, that opened not long ago in that area.

So I basically live inbetween a few Binny's locations, but none exactly near where I live. There was one proposed to open on Lawrence east of Damen where Sears used to have a store in till just over a year ago, so if that one comes to fruitation, it'll be a lot easier for me to get to Binny's. The new one in Lincolnwood was pretty nice(in an old grocery store space), when I stopped there en route to going to Village Crossing and also Half Price Books. Sometimes I have stopped at the ones in Skokie(Dempster St) and also Clark/Halsted, if I'm in that area.

Sigh with how unusually cold it's gotten, I don't feel up as much to want to travel. Hopefully we get some weather days in the teens and 20s soon again, instead of this annoying wind chill pushing temps below zero.

I hate the parts of the country, where liquor stores are still ran by the state or some other government under strict rules. I really prefer the states where private businesses can operate liquor stores as they want to, but to each their own.

bro that's what i was thinking this morning. i drove by this liquor store at 9:30 and it's not even open yet. it looks like it's been around since the fuckin 50s.

i feel like if i could get a loan i could rent a building and run a liquor store and just sit around all day doing inventory and orders. i used to work at a liquor store in Washington before they allowed supermarkets and stuff to carry liquor.

it's just that i don't really know anything about taxes or requirements for owning a business outside of needing to obtain a liquor license lmfao

Good question. I'd assume as long as you didn't have anything weird on your record(i.e. felony conviction), that you probably could theoretically apply for an alcohol off premises(to go sales) license without any issue in most states.

And ugh, don't get me started on how too many liquor stores in Chicago are sketchy looking and seem ripoff like(for prices) in how they operate. :( I've gotten to the point, where I only go to a few select ones that do a decent job of carrying craft(microbrewed) beer. My favorite one is just outside of the neighborhood I live in(Bottles and Cans), but I find it more than worth it to go a slight bit further to go to that one. Such a great run store, and the staff ACTUALLY knows about the beers they carry! Also they even do the rare step of allowing you to mix(most any, there are some exceptions) beers into a create your own 4 or 6 pack, that aren't in the CYO 4/6 pack section. Most stores don't allow any deviations from what's in the CYO 4 or 6 pack area to be mixed into one, so Bottles and Cans permitting that is a big treat IMO. The Beer Temple is also awesome, if you're into craft beer.

Yes. My brother's. I cried because I saw how happy they both were. They struggled a lot to stay together; many people were against it and it caused a strain in the family. And in the end, they took the chance together and just.......jumped. I was so happy for him; it was an overwhelming feeling indeed.

I think once or twice, I may've cried at a wedding. Not too often, but a few rare times it has occurred.

For fully one type over the other(and not a mix between the 2), car over an SUV. Although I can see why some prefer SUVs, for the fact they offer a higher vantage point.

Personally, I kinda like cars that are a mix('crossover', as people often call them), between a regular car and an SUV. For example like a Nissan Murano, Subaru Outback(brother's girlfriend has one btw), etc. And it still allows a vantage point, where less often versus a traditional car, you get blocked by a big vehicle in front, back, or the side of you.

I once brought Burger King to a McDonald's.

rude

McDonald's charging for water in the middle of the Arizona desert was rude, so I was boycotting them. When my high school track team's bus stopped at McD's after a meet, a few of us ran to the BK across the street instead and brought it back.

Good for you guys, for doing that years ago! I think I would've done the same, if I had been annoyed about McDonald's for some of their practices. They also do the crap of charging if you request extra sauces, as well. :( One McDonald's that's within a gas station is famous for charging something like 15-20 cents(hadn't been there in a while, I don't know what price in cents it's at now) per each ketchup packet outside Gene and Jude's in River Grove, IL, since Gene and Jude's does NOT serve ketchup whatsoever. Even if you only wanted to get an order of fries.

This is Duncan, our newest accidental addition. My wife had taken the kids to the animal shelter to donate some toys and play with all the cats in kitty city and he made us fall in love with him. He's at least 8, a little bumpy and I think he's mute but he has an awesome personally.

He was in the shelter almost 6 months before we got him so they dropped the fee to 5 bucks.

Cool cat. As someone who volunteers at a cat shelter, it's good to see not everyone ignores adopting the middle aged and older cats at shelters. I still wish more of the older/senior cats in particular were adopted out, though.

I didn't realize there were still some library cats around, infrequently. I know of a few bookstores with store cats, but I rarely hear as often about library cats for whatever reason. According to an article I saw in the Chicago Tribune today, Litchfield, IL's library(between Saint Louis and Springfield, IL) has one, called Stacks. And it mentioned that in the staff breakroom of the Richmond, IL library(Nippersink Library), that they have a cat who resides in that room called Newby. I'll post a link to that article later, when I have more time. Anyway the link on Litchfield, IL's library site about Stacks:

http://www.litchfieldpubliclibrary.org/stacks-the-library-cat/more-stacks-photos.html

Also, some other library cats that are still actively serving as library cats:

Socks and Spot have just turned six months old, and are off to the vet next tuesday to be neutered/microchipped - then we'll have the fun of introducing them to the outside world. :)

They still look pretty tiny to me. They only weigh around the 5.8/6lbs, which is half the size of Oscar, who is always around the 12.6-13lbs range. Maybe they're just going to be small cats?

Here they are looking cute and cuddly together:

Nice pics. I still miss Shosti, my brother's former cat who died last June. Ditto with Bear, who my brother's ex-wife kept when they divorced. I wonder if Bear is still alive anymore? My guess is that he perhaps still could be, since I saw Bear in a non-private pic with that ex-wife's new husband on Facebook.

I'm pretty sure she's a tortie

Folklore[edit]
Cats of this coloration are believed to bring good luck in the folklore of many cultures.[10] In the United States, these are sometimes referred to as money cats.[11]

According to cat expert Jackson Galaxy, tortoiseshell cats tend to have a much more distinct personality.[12] The magazine of the Smithsonian Institution has reported that studies suggest many tortoiseshell owners believe their cats have increased attitude and they call it "tortitude", but there is no science which supports this.[13]

All this is true, lol. I was paid $200 to take her in and she's probably the sassyest cat I've ever met

Yeah, I'd agree about torties. They always have more of a sassy attitude, vs. most cats I've seen at the cat shelter I volunteer for.

Amazing this motorcyclist, saved the life of this young orange cat! Kudos to her for doing that, I think I would've attempted to do the same if I had been the one on that motorcycle, and could safely reach and grab that cat WITHOUT getting hit by a vehicle. I noticed these 2 vids, thanks to someone posting about it on City Data.

(cat being rescued from busy intersection. also watch carefully, the cat first appears at 0:13, but she doesn't realize it fell into the intersection till 30 seconds later. can't believe all the cars stopped, so she could pick up the cat and get back to her motorcycle)
(update on that cat)

Long time, no post in one of these topics. My brother's orange cat(Shosti) died in June of this year due to suddenly developing lymphoma(and at a middle age of almost 10 years old, ugh), but funny enough my brother's girlfriend has an orange cat(Benny) I've really started to like as much as him. Benny even lets me pick him up and carry him on my shoulder(though I never do that for too long), just like Shosti did!

I'll post a pic soon, that I got of both her dog(a greyhound named Cali) and Benny sitting in the same room. It was awesome, to see them chilling and enjoying each other.
