72. The Last of Us (Dragon66116)
vSJq2Sw

As you can see, I am not one of those people who believes The Last of Us was the game of the generation or anything like that. I mostly like it, but I do have some issues with it, so I will not be quite so effusive with my praise as others. It actually took me a little while to really get into the game. I put the game down for a little while after a couple of hours because I wasn't totally feeling it, but when I picked it up the second time, I saw it through to the end. I can tell you the exact moment this game hooked me, and if you've played The Last of Us, you'll probably know precisely what I mean when I say, "End of Summer." I really enjoyed the Fall and Winter arcs, too, because you get to see Joel and Ellie's relationship gradually developing after a rocky start, and I had mostly gotten the hang of the gameplay by that point, so getting through areas became a lot smoother for me. Then I largely enjoyed Spring, until we got to the end.

I have big problems with the ending of The Last of Us. I don't like it at all, in fact. I'm endeavoring to keep these writeups as spoiler-free as possible, so I won't go into detail, but I've elaborated on my issues on it in the past. I've had several people tell me something along the lines of, "That's the point. That's why it's so good," but that's nonsense to me. There's a certain Ellie quote that hits me hard when I think about how this game ended: "It can't have been for nothing." Apparently, it can. There are some people who thought this game didn't need a sequel because it ended perfectly, but I'm pretty relieved they're making a follow-up because then maybe they can do some damage control and alleviate some of the negative feelings I have about it.

Bonus Question: What's the worst ending for a game you like?

73. Super Mario Bros. (pjbasis)

Another YouTube video, but when it comes to hilarious Mario 1 stuff, that was the first thing that came to mind. It's a Board 8 classic. Anyway, Mario 1 is a game that needs no introduction or explanation, and I can't say anything about it that probably hasn't already been said before. As such, I'm not going to attempt some hackneyed review or talk at length about how this is the first video game I ever played (which is true) since that's not a unique experience for people my age. I played this game a bunch, but I probably haven't beaten it that many times. There was no real pressure or compulsion to do so for whatever the reason. I could play until I ran out of lives a few times and be fine with that. I do remember when I got a little older, I wanted to beat the game without using any Warp Pipes. It took a while, but it felt like a pretty big accomplishment when I finally pulled it off.

It was pretty difficult to nail down exactly where to rank Mario 1 on this list because it's always been a part of my life (as weird as that is to say). A lot of my knowledge of its secrets and tricks feels like second nature or common sense, like it's stuff I've just always known. I haven't played the game in years, but I feel like I could manage to remember most of them. I'm not sure how much of my love for it is just nostalgia. You never forget your first time and all that. I wouldn't quibble with anyone who would rank it higher than this because you're not going to hear me say a bad thing about Mario 1.

Bonus Question: What was the first video game you ever played?

That was indeed my thing. I haven't done one in several years, but I don't know that there's much point. With the voter pool so low, anyone who can get a half decent B8 rally can get a character in nowadays.

I think when Badd tells you that he waited on the first floor until Gumshoe got there and when he got to the hallway, Yew was already there, that's when I figured out who the killer was because they had to already be dead before Gumshoe got there for someone else to be the killer. I'm usually pretty bad at figuring these things out, but that one seemed kind of obvious to me.

I actually liked the fact that you got to watch a few CPU battles during the Martial Arts Tournament. I wish there had been more of that. I used to like to do CPU tournaments with fighting games when I was a kid just for fun.

I remember Moltar ran the Brawl Fighting League in the wake of SSBB, which was basically a weekly series of CPU fights, with him writing storylines a la pro wrestling. It was great fun. I've thought about doing something similar on B8 with maybe another fighting game, but I'm definitely not as good of a creative writer as Moltar is, so I wouldn't be able to do something of that quality.

74. Persona 4: Dancing All Night (Janus5k)

This is another instance where a YouTube video is more appropriate than a GIF because that thing is seriously amazing. It fits so perfectly. You don't even need to have played the game to enjoy that. Anyway, Persona 4: Dancing All Night was my very first Platinum, so it will always hold a special place in my heart for that alone! Seriously though, I do like this game. Probably the biggest bummer is the fact that you can't freely choose your character and partner for any given song, but they gave each character a unique dancing style, so I kinda get it. I think they should've given you more leeway on your dance partner though, but I honestly eventually got over it because I had a lot of fun with it. I don't have a lot of experience with rhythm games, so while I'm sure there are ones out there with better scoring systems and control schemes, I can't judge it based on those qualities. I wanted to play this one to get one more game with the Persona 4 cast (one of my absolute favorites in anything) and because I love the series' music.

The most pleasant surprise of this game is Kanami Mashita, the Risette replacement from Persona 4 who had been occasionally spoken of but never seen until now. She's just so much fun. I love all of her songs because they're so high energy and catchy, especially her version of Your Affection. Kanami is also an intriguing character in the story mode, the entirety of which is basically a scathing commentary on how fake and unhealthy the pop idol industry is. The premise of the story (defeating Shadows with the power of dance!) is absurd, but there's a serious message hidden in there, too. Kanami develops a really endearing friendship with Nanako, too. The other members of Kanamin Kitchen are kinda whatever, but Kanami herself is really good.

As far as the gameplay itself goes, I suppose one of the appeals of rhythm games is seeing yourself gradually getting better and better at the songs until you eventually nail the perfect run, which Dancing All Night refers to as "King Crazy" for some reason. I eventually got to the point where I could at least complete every song on Hard, although I've only gotten a perfect run on a few. I could barely handle the All Night difficulty, but again, I don't play these games often. Probably my favorite songs in the game are the aforementioned Kanami version of Your Affection, Yukiko's version of Snowflakes, Kanji's version of Best Friends, Rise's version of Now I Know, and Marie's version of the P4AU theme, Break Out Of... (yes the song title trails off at the end like that). I generally enjoy them all though. I'm looking forward to the Persona 3 and Persona 5 versions, too, so hopefully they get localized!

Bonus Question: What is your favorite Persona song?

75. Skee-Ball (WhiteLens)
U1phpTZ

This was my favorite non-video game to play at the arcade growing up. There's something addicting about Skee-Ball and trying to get a perfect score on it, which I'm pretty sure I never did. I always went for the highest scoring holes though, partly because I didn't care about getting tickets from the machine to exchange for stuff at the counter. If that was my goal, I could've gotten higher scores and more tickets by playing a bit more conservatively, but I was always "go big or go home" with Skee-Ball. It always felt very satisfying landing a ball in the 50 point hole and especially the 100 point hole for the ones that had those.

Apparently, Skee-Ball is still alive and well. For some reason, I figured this was something that had gone by the wayside since arcades have largely become defunct. I guess I've just been living in the wrong places because I can't remember the last time I even saw a Skee-Ball game. However, I have learned that there is a skeeball.com where you can buy your own Skee-Ball machine for your home, for the low, low price of $6000! What a deal! Plus, you don't even have to insert coins to play this version, so it basically pays for itself after several thousand games! Wow!

Bonus Question: What is your favorite non-video game at the arcade?
