Oh no it is absolutely a fair criticism and concern to have. When we played years ago there were periods where I spent way too much time focusing on TLK, sometimes to the detriment of other responsibilities I had in my life. I know other people felt the same and that was probably a contributing factor in why many of us eventually stopped.

That's fair enough. I don't want it to feel like an obligation for anyone playing.

Ah, we're stacking already? Guess old man Kettch will have to figure out this WhatsApp thing tomorrow then.

Yeah I thought we were going to have another random age to use as a buffer. This is what they said in the recent official forum post about it:

We are trying to ascertain the best solution for the pvp units, but expect random joining to be implemented from now on, with the following order: Europe age random joining > Asia age random joining > Europe age normal joining > Asia age normal joining.

Now if that was accurate it means we would have had 3 random ages in a row, because the previous age had been random asia and was their way of kicking off the new system.

So I double checked and they said the next 2 ages are going to be normal joining.

So it seems a shame to waste a normal joining age if we're only going to get them half the time now.

I'm waiting for the reference guide to update with the asia units though. I'm not sure how (if at all) they have been changed since we last played. That could have an impact on what ranks best in asia now.

New Age starts Tomorrow @ 4 PM PST, 7PM EST

No country decided yet, stay tuned for further details.

And remember, even if you don't have a ton of time to play it doesn't take long to power rank the first few levels and then just join the country WhatsApp channel. Then you'll get a notification to join/rejoin a SF or the main army and it's a piece of cake.

What has set our stacks apart in the past hasn't been our dedication to spending every spare moment training, but our ability to get a country going quickly for fast wars, and our ability to get plenty of us to join the SFs when it's time. With the advances in mobile devices it's even easier than ever. There is also the fact that so many of us are US so we'll have a stronger nightshift than any other country. While they sleep we steal all their lands.

Yes, it should be.

Hopefully we have a country chosen. My shift at work tomorrow starts exactly at the age start time so I'm going to have to log in and join the country right when it starts. Fortunately Wednesdays are slower days at work so there is a possibility that I'm able to do my early game training while at work, but it's definitely not the ideal start time But if we have 5 quick Gens we could potentially be at war as early as tomorrow evening if we wanted to be.

To continue my listing of random things that have been changed since years past:

(And this one might be of particular importance to the Hero Medal Champ himself @Lieutenant_Kettch )

Heroes no longer cap at 200,000 XP. They are also like units now where they don't have lives. Once a hero is dead it's dead. Fortunately when you hire a new hero it will have a good chunk of XP, though I'm not sure what the replacement's HP is based on. I'll dismiss both my supports before this age ends and see if I can figure that out. But to perhaps balance their permadeath they can now continue to accumlate XP and points to spend on skills. They will wont level up past level 23, but you can actually afford to max healing without having to sacrifice important dueling skills.

Age ends in 4 hrs and 23 minutes.

The idea isn't to know with certainty what you are doing. The idea is to give yourself an ambitious (albeit arbitrary) deadline and utilize that to just start putting the words down. You don't have to have a meticulously planned story or have done months of prepwork. Just throw caution to the wind and start putting one word in front of the next. You can work out the quality after the fact.

Well like I mentioned about things like remembering gamefaqs posts it can definitely suffer in some respects, I still use Chrome myself for most of my mobile browsing.

But when I want to load pages lightning fast and do training battles in TLK? Puffin outspeeds any other option I have atm. I just found it recently while searching for lightweight browsers, so I'm sure it's not the only option available, it's just the one I happened to go with.

I've found that switching browsers on my phone allows me to complete my training runs much faster. I have an android and I switched to the browser called 'Puffin' that supposedly has some of the best benchmarks in terms of refresh speed and lightweight cpu usage. And while Puffin is not great for things like gamefaqs (if you switch to a different program for a second it will lose anything you typed in if you had a post in progress) it is actually drastically faster than Chrome was. And so for training runs I've been using Puffin exclusively and it's been pretty great.

So just keep training at the marketplace until you hit lieutenant keeping in mind to do the following things:

1) When your commander promotes, promote any soldiers who were waiting.
2) When your commander promotes, buy more soldiers until your auth is capped again
3) When your hero levels up, go to the Armor and buy him more gear. (Buy the bronze sword at level 4 but otherwise just keep buying armor so he wont get injured)
4) When your soldiers get injured, heal them at the hospital and keep training. This works with spears all the way until the rank of General*, but with footmen you could eventually start to run out of cash from healing them all the time.
5) When you hit Lieutenant you can buy your 2nd hero and outfit him much the same as the first.
6) When you hit Lieutenant you will no longer be able to train at the Marketplace, but new options will appear depending on the terrain of the city you are in. It will say "Patrol the Forest/Plains/Mountains/Snow/Desert" depending on where you are. Ideally you will be in a city where your country has a bonus. For example I'm in poland right now and I get a +5% bonus on mountains so I try to do all my training in mountain cities/borders. This terrain training works exactly like market training, only you run into larger forces. But you can afford more soldiers so it balances out.

What you are doing now is called Force Heal (FH) Training and it involves burning through your supply of gold to continue to train without stopping. But as I mentioned with footmen this wont be possible forever and so if you are starting to run out of gold then you will want to do training runs instead, where you train without stopping to heal until a large chunk of your army is injured. Then you will see at the hospital how many ticks it will take for them to heal and you'll come back in 60 or 90 or however many minutes it will take and resume training then.

At the beginning of the age it is perfectly safe to train and go offline because no one can pvp you that early. But once wars start if you go offline while your army is injured from training then there is a chance that someone will pvp you while you are gone and they can do a lot of damage to an army that is weakened from training. So typically once wars are beginning you will only "train down" if you know you can stick around until you are healthy again. But at that point you wont need to get all your XP from training and you can join in the battles to capture cities and you'll get a lot of XP from those instead. The important thing to remember is that we want to optimize the training in the early game to get our country to the point where we are strong enough to go to war faster than the other countries. Once you've reached that point you can survive mainly on Strike Force (SF) XP rather than training XP.

^That should get you started. I'm sure there are plenty of small things that I neglected or that I take for granted that you would know so if something is not clear then let me know. Additionally I can hop on discord or something if anyone is going to hop into a country to practice the early game training and give answers on the fly if you have questions.

Tom Bombadil posted...
there a strat guide or something I can be reading while I wait? I don't remember much about how to play <_<

I'll write it up as a step-by-step.

-Getting Started-

-Log in to TLK.

-Go to your Encampments [E] Page. This is where all your soldiers and heroes will be listed when you have some.

-Go to the Barracks [K] Page. This is where you buy soldiers and heroes. You wont be able to buy your first hero till you hit Corporal at 90 XP.

-Buy your ranking unit of choice. On the Europe map that is usually Footmen because they are better long term. Spearmen are faster and safe until the rank of General** or Vice Marshall, but they tend to fall off late game and would need to be replaced. Just buy as many as you can. You have "Authority" which determines how many soldiers you are allowed to have in your command.

-Go to the City Center [C]. It's time to start training.

-Until you hit Lieutenant (1000 XP) your training method choice is going to be Patrol The Marketplace which will be one of the options on the City Center.

-When you click to Patrol the Market it will give you a scenario, such as a boy stealing an apple or some rowdy patrons at a bar stirring up trouble. The scenario does not matter and is just window dressing. Just choose whichever option will lead to a fight. It will display the results of the fight and look something like this:

Private TomBombadildefeatsAnne Bonny
SoldiersTotInjDeadCaptSoldiersTotInjDeadCapt
Commanders1------Commanders11----
Heroes0------Heroes0------
Artillery0------Artillery1------
Cavalry0------Cavalry0------
Infantry10------Infantry11----
Private TheOddRanger enters the battlefield.
----
----
----
This fight gave you 12 xp points!
You were victorious!

Only with better formatting so the Total / Injured / Dead / Captured columns aren't screwed up. The chance of getting an injury at these early ranks is pretty small, especially with spearmen. After each battle just click "Return to the Marketplace" and do it again.

-If you do take an injury then go to the Hospital [H] and pay to have your soldier healed. Especially if it's still an Apprentice Footmen or Apprentice Spearmen it costs the same amount to heal it immediately at the hospital than it would to dismiss it and replace it with a new one. This makes it very cost effective to heal Tier 1 units.

-So you will continue to train at the marketplace. Once your commander promotes you will buy a hero from the Barracks. Then you will go to the Armory [A] and buy your hero a leather vest. He will only be a level 1 hero to start so he wont be able to hold any more than that at first. Because you promoted you will also have more Authority now, so you can go to the Barracks and buy more soldiers.

-You continue in this way training at the marketplace. You will also need to start paying attention to when your soldiers are going to be ready to level up. It will say at the bottom of the battle screen when this happens. Something like "Apprentice Spearman Odelric is ready to level up!". When that happens you can go to the Encampment screen to promote him. But when you promote units they require more authority, so if your authority is already capped out you will have to either dismiss one of your soldiers to promote some others or simply wait until your commander promotes again.

I feel like there are a few other small changes I've neglected to mention, but I can't think of them at the moment.

-If you upgrade to a Duke Account (8.00 GBP which is like 11.50 USD atm) they changed the way Healing Turns work. You still get a HT after 6 hours of not training and you still get your 2nd HT after 9 hours. But now SFs and main drops no longer interrupt that timer. So you can join every SF and be in the main at all times and it won't Interrupt the HTs. Only training battles and offensive PvP battles will ruin those now.

Also if you are Duke and you join randomly you still get the bonus 2 HTs so you can hold up to 4 HTs at once. But once you use your bonus HTs you only hold 2 again. They are counted as different types of HTs.

The current age just hit 4 countries remaining so the end age timer has begun.

Current age is set to end on Tuesday November 7th at 6 PM PST.

I believe there is still 24 hours between ages so the new age should start on Wednesday November 8th at 6 PM PST.

This time is subject to change if another country gets killed off.

Edit that time is honestly not great for me. I typically work from 4pm until 11 pm. The best ill be able to do is schedule my break that night to line up with the start time.

-When you zoom on the map, if you click the individual city it will tell you which cities border it. This is very useful for cases where it can be hard to see if two cities touch or not.

-Instead of 1 LD and 4 HC, you now have 1 Leader, 1 Chief of Staff and 3 HC. The CoS can do basically everything the LD can do including switch HC tags. Also HC can assign a new 2ic of the Main Army even if the 2ic got lost somehow. So basically you can be LD without having to be available 18 hours a day now because there are a lot more ways for the main to get moved without being stuck.

Couple things!

1) If you are brand brand new to TLK and are going to give it a shot then please let me know. It is definitely easier when you get started to have your hand held a bit. You can fly past the earliest stages of the game and cut through a lot of the confusing aspects that can overwhelm new players. B8 might not be doing something fun as a group for another age or two (depending on how the random joining is going to work), but this is still a perfect time to make an account and get some of the basics down. (Also PM me before you make an account if you don't have one yet!)

2) With that in mind I recommend returning players to start getting your feet wet as well. Even if it's just to practice power ranking through the blue ranks and getting used to the new early game heal costs. I've tried out outline the changes as best I could, but there are a lot of them so there is no substitution for just experiencing them yourself.

3) Another change that I forgot that is a pretty big one! Merchant Items now sell for different amounts. They increased the item value of the low tier items and decreased the value of the highest tier items. The net result is that 50 merchant is worth a LOT less than it used to be, and lower merchant values are worth somehwat more. Here is a table:

Item - Old Value - New Value

Hides - 5k - 10k
Paper - 10k - 20k
Timber - 15k - 30k
Wheat - 20k - 40k
Clothes - 30k - 50k
Oil - 40k - 70k
Salt - 55k - 100k
Grapes - 70k - 125k
Bronze - 100k - notsure
Iron - 150k - 225k
Wine - 250k - 300k
Silk - 400k - 400k
Dyes - 600k - 550k
Spices - 1M - 750k
Ivory - 2M - 1M
Silver - 3.5M - notsure
Gold - 6M - notsure
Gems - 10M - notsure

I think bronze is 150k and I"m not sure what values come after Ivory now, but i've heard that the highest item is only worth 4M now so it might just be 2/3/4M.

So that in addition to the removal of trainer XP really reduces the ability to do significant ranking very late in an age.

I feel like there are a few other small changes I've neglected to mention, but I can't think of them at the moment.

So probably not worth the hero XP loss and unit XP loss to try some sort of bizzare suicide strat at Gen* to rebuild to cavs/arty and Gen at the beginning of an age?

Because I'm imagining 5 of us rushing to Gen* with spears. Setting up HC so we can start a war and then suiciding to a large city one at a time. Rebuilding to... something fun(?) with the 1M gold we'd get and going straight to war immediately to SF and level up our fun(?) units.

How long would you say it takes? I would do some testing myself but I'm in the hunt for a ranking medal despite starting this age over 2 days late so I don't really want to suicide -_-

Well then consider that another pro of the lower activity. Wheels are a lot easier to plan when you are lucky to take more than 5 cities per wheel -__-.

Hopefully if we stack a country we'll be able to do more than that though.

Did you see the Beauty and the Beast remake? They somehow made every single aspect worse.

Is this another one of those Anagram Opinions I hear so much about?

I'm debating whether I should try to get another idea ready even though now I'll be a few days behind or if I should just drop out entirely

Definitely run with a new idea.

The idea here is to do.

You can worry about how good it is later and benefit from the doing regardless.
