I always demand to see work before I pay them anything

almost every artist i've seen with a commission info page mentions upfront payment which i don't think is entirely unreasonable. the last artist i commissioned from like two years ago allowed half payment upfront and the rest upon completion which i was fine with. she was very responsive and open to feedback during the work but it seems like she's in a minority with a process like that.

i don't really look through the commission info of artists on a "lower-tier" so maybe that has something to do with it.

part of the reason why i waited. he was posting finished commissions, just not mine. he has 20k+ followers on twitter so i was wondering if i really was that far down on the queue. in retrospect i should have asked how many people were ahead of me to get a better idea of how much longer i could expect to wait. obviously after that long a wait with no response i suspected he either had a massive backlog, straight up forgot about my commission or didn't like the character so was putting it off or something which i mentioned to him.

in seriousness though, someone who's clearly not an amateur i guess (weird body proportions, poorly defined faces, or some other apparent flaw that's immediately noticeable in a piece, etc.). i would expect to pay $25 minimum and that is usually if their style is more cartoonish/distinctive. otherwise would probably expect to pay upwards of $35 at least so someone who feels comfortable charging that much for their work. obviously these aren't super strict descriptions and i'm not expecting any super professionals though.

if anybody's had positive past experiences with an artist, i'd like to take a look at them too.

i'll admit deviantart did not cross my mind because of the stigma it has

character fanart. under $100.

don't care particularly about the kind of style as long as it's "good"

i'll think of something that i think their style will work for if i like them.

this seems pretty similar to me! but on a lesser scale

i was not on anything so that may have been a contributing factor.

i think it's interesting(?) that you seem to characterize Honeybear primarily as a comedy/funny album. clearly there are humorous elements and maybe i'm showing off my plebeian side here because the draw for me is the more obvious romantic tone and themes of the album. i'm a sucker for the cynical "the world sucks and we're all going to die but at least i've got you" attitude and the resulting intimacy conveyed as a result.

i'm honestly not that big on Mouth Moods myself actually but i'll just ask you for your favorite track. Starting Line/Smooth for me.

i'd like to hear more about how the book club works and your experience in it. it's something i've always felt like i wanted to be a part of but predict i wouldn't "do well" in because of my reading habits.
