so what motivation do I have as a landlord to be a landlord if not to maximize profits? you seem to de facto be arguing for rent control, and if you do any research on the subject you will quickly see it does more harm than good.

but lets say there is an area that is getting nicer causing the market rate to increase but for some reason I am legally unable to raise my rents for existing tenants. what do you think the landlord does?
Do they keep the places nice, trying to keep their tenants happy? no. they try to make their tenants as miserable as possible, often doing illegal things, knowing that the tenants that are getting these protections don't have means to fight back.

and at the end of the day it is my property, not theirs. i am the owner. they get to live there because it is a temporarily beneficial proposition for me. and because of that i have rights and duties to them and the property.

There aren't positives on the aspects of it that are negative.


Are we speaking the same language here?

Look, we have positive aspects: reduced crime in the area, improved infrastructure, new profitable businesses, influx of skilled wokers, more money for the city, etc.

And we have negatives: poorer residents may have to migrate as the cost of living rises beyond their means.

Do the positive aspects outweigh the fact that the poorer residents may very well have to move out of that neighborhood? If they do, then it's a net-positive, no? I acknowledge that it may not always be easy to determine.


I don't gradate the aspects and values in such a way. But such is the nature of a personal opinion, which is what the topic was asking about.


doesn't that just lead to decision paralysis? how else are you supposed to resolve issues of conflicting positions?

I'd support freezing property values based on what you bought a primary residency at, but rents go up. im a landlord, I want to maximize my investment. you think I shouldn't be able to do what I see fit with my property just because someone has been there a while and it becomes their home rather than my property they are temporarily living in? Most people impacted by gentrification are renters, not owners. Why are their property rights greater than mine?

Looking at a calendar and trying to remember back:
Graduated Dec. 16, 2004
Had 3 job offers upon graduation. Job offer I accepted I received Jan. 7, 2005.
Start date was February 25, 2005 because of drug tests, background check, interim security clearances, etc.

The mad scientist did not patent the single example of the flying car he made. You can do whatever you want with it, including patent it, but that will require you to reverse engineer it and do the proper paper work.

I talked with a number of people at work, everyone making between like 70k and 150k, no one was getting more than $10 a paycheck (every 2 weeks). At the end of the day what you are getting now is just how the companies expect it will impact your end of 2018 taxes, could be my company is taking a conservative approach but my CEO is all in on Trump, the company even donated to the inauguration party, so seems like they would have the inside scoop on things.

I think for me lack of potassium gives me cramps. not nearly that bad but if I don't have my legs straight while sleep (like a leg tucked under the other leg) I will sometimes wake up in excruciating pain and limping the next day.

I gained a lot of weight out of college because I was eating the garbage most people shovel in their face as like a distraction. I control what I eat so I don't get fat again but that upsets people.

I tend to not eat at office functions in general. even in seattle people tend to give you shit for it. for a lot of people food is like how you bond or something. seems like for a lot of people food represents love or something. or is a replacement for it.

when I was a kid parents of friends, aunts and uncles and grand parents always tried to force me to eat more and more because I wasn't fat. gave me body image issues where I thought I was a rail thin stick even though I was pretty muscular and in good shape.

Stillwater is the underwriter that Geico used when I briefly had them for home owners insurance.

I dropped them August last year and have been trying to get the remaining balance of my pre-paid premium from them since then. They are now requiring me to fill out paper work to get it back or else it goes to "unclaimed property".

Seriously, fuck them so hard.

Let me ask this in another way. Would you have supported ending feudalism? The feudal lords were the ones who were paying the taxes and keeping civilization. Shouldn't their voices be the only ones being heard? The serfs are the ignorant masses who have minimal skills and only have value when led by the feudal lords, no?

As far as I can see we are making the owners of capital the new feudal lords and the arguments I see now are the same as the ones hundreds of years ago.

its not a matter of leading, its a matter of saying we are all Americans and all deserve a fair say in who will lead us.

People naturally try to move up the ladder. Those who have power try to silent the voices trying to usurp them. We have a system that keeps those in power in power and makes it harder for new players to get a bigger stake of the pie.

The voice of the people being governed must have weight according to the founding fathers of this country.
