I thought Prometheus had a better concept and was more interesting, but Covenant was a better movie.

It's definitely not the end, though. Even if it goes on a long hiatus and Scott never does another one, someone else will, like with Star Wars.

It'll never be the same. They don't make good movies like that anymore, not like Alien.

I thought Prometheus and Covenant were great, probably the third and fourth best films in the series. Not sure why people have such an issue with them.

I think most people expected something different, and didn't understand what they got instead. It might have been to ethereal, too abstract when people might have been expecting a movie more grounded in what came before it.

:(

"Although 2012's Prometheus was met with a mixed response from both fans and critics, it did well enough for a follow-up, this year's Alien: Covenant. In the lead up to Covenant's release, director Ridley Scott spoke about his plans for more movies, suggesting that the Covenant sequel might start shooting in 2018. However, the movie's disappointing box office performance has cast doubt on these plans, and now Scott has admitted it might not happen.

In a roundtable interview hosted by The Hollywood Reporter, Scott explained that he was working on many projects at the same time as Covenant, and suggested that time was nearly up for the Alien series. "It was a crossfire of too much business", he said. "I'm doing a lot of TV and films, there are six films going out this year. I figured it was a good piece of business to follow through Prometheus, which, from ground zero, had good lift-off. So we went to Covenant to perpetuate the idea and [revive] the franchise of the Alien. [However] I think the beast has almost run out, personally."

While Scott does not mention the movie's financial performance, it was clearly well below what was expected. The movie made $240 million worldwide, much less than Prometheus's $403 million take.

In March, the director suggested that the next movie would be called Alien: Awakening, and that the series would continue for several more films beyond that. "There will be more after this. If this is successful, and then the next one, and then there will definitely be three more," he said. "If you really want a franchise, I can keep cranking it for another six. I'm not going to close it down again. No way."

The other big sci-fi movie that Scott was involved with in 2017 was Blade Runner 2049, this time as producer. The sequel to his 1982 classic has to date pulled in a similar box office take to Covenant--$239 million to date--but on a higher budget. It is estimated that Blade Runner 2049 had a production budget of $150 million, compared to Covenant's $97 million.

Yeah, you make payments. So what? two years it's paid off. They don't even charge interest. You know what your bill will be. If you know you can pay it, then there is no surprise.

By obscuring the cost, they can slowly creep up the price tag and most people will never realize.

You mean in general for smartphones across the board? 'Cause I mean it's the same payment every month for two years. It doesn't randomly go up for the customer.

Yes. It takes agency away from the consumer by making it harder, even if only slightly, to consider price in your purchase. If everyone had to buy every phone outright, Apple wouldn't even have a $1000 phone. They only reason it exists is because they know most consumers will never know how much they're paying.

I hear what you're saying a little better. You're right that this is the only way they can make this fly. But, I look at it like financing anything else, a pc, a car, etc. When I got my s8+ I knew very well that I'm on the hook for $850 for the next two years. But then it's mine.

I don't think anyone on CE makes a living by writing fiction. That is incredibly rare. My understanding is the majority of people who do make a living writing fiction, mostly factory produce an ungodly amount of awful romance novels every year

the rest are jk rowling and grr martin

is romance the only genre that sells? erotica and romance? do you know if action & adventure stories sell well?

You have to imagine what would someone now-a-days really take time out of their day to read. I recommend something scandalous, but that's where your imagination and creativity come from. That's what you got to make, the story that will make someone take time out of their day to want to read, That's what you write my friend.

http://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/Judge-sets-execution-date-for-Sugar-Land-man-12336728.php

But here's the interesting part: he stages a burglary on his family to kill them and inherit the money. He killed his mom, his brother, and his dad was there and survived the attempt on his life. But the dad don't want his son to be executed! He even stole $10K from his dad right after that.

"A Sugar Land man convicted in a murder-for-hire scheme to off his own family in hopes of snagging a plump $1 million inheritance is now slated for execution early next year, according to court papers filed this month.
A Fort Bend County judge on Wednesday signed the papers that could send Thomas Whitaker, who used the cover of a faked burglary to mask the murder of his mother and brother, to the Huntsville death chamber on Feb. 22.
"This is a case in which retributive justice plays no part," attorney James Rytting said late Monday. "The victim in this case is a father who does not want his child to die. It seems that this case shows that the only victim's right that counts is the right of vengeance - you don't have a right to mercy."
Just after a 2003 celebratory dinner marking his supposed graduation from Sam Houston State University - a milestone that never happened - Whitaker arranged for two friends to wait at the family home for a burglary set-up.
When the family of four returned home from the restaurant, a gunman opened fire as they walked through the door, killing 51-year-old Patricia Whitaker and 19-year-old Kevin. Only Whitaker's father survived the attack.
Afterward, as police probed the killings, Whitaker stole $10,000 from his father and fled to Mexico.
When authorities picked him up 15 months later, his father hired an attorney to argue against the capital case.
The pair of slayings came after three years of planning and at least one previous murder attempt, according to court papers.
Triggerman Chris Brashear pleaded guilty to murder a decade ago and took a life sentence, while the getaway driver - Steve Champagne - agreed to a 15-year plea deal.
But a Fort Bend jury settled on a death sentence for the mastermind behind the plot, and after more than a decade of legal battles, the condemned man lost out in the Supreme Court last month.
He does not have any pending appeals, Rytting said.
Fort Bend County District Attorney John Healey declined to comment.
