Again, I'm not claiming that as any sort of serious theory - it's more of a way to criticize the scene by saying how badly what we got clashes with how his characterization actually comes across to me. As in, him acting out of self-interest would make a lot more sense to me than what I'm expected to believe. I mean if his goal was to stay alive he did a pretty poor job if Palpatine kills Luke there, Vader gets to stay alive longer seems more like his goal was to save his son even more than just to redeem himself (which you could argue was still self-interest but whatever) I feel like he had to have known messing with Palpatine in the middle of force lightning was suicide --- |

The change from Dark Knight to Paladin winds up being mostly symbolic. Hope just sort of ends up fading into the background once the entire party comes together because there's nothing more for him to do. Sazh largely does the same thing. And yeah, you can still see signs of Wakka's development in how he interacts with Rikku at times, but the game wouldn't have been very different if it had never happened. The change in his attitude toward Yevon ends up being the most notable thing about him. --- |

| LeonhartFour 09/14/17 1:46:09 PM #316 | Like, to use another example of an oft-hated character who gets development to get past his flaws, would you really notice any difference in FFX if Wakka just wasn't a racist from the start? Probably not. He gets his own arc and he provides Tidus with valuable perspective on what the average Spiran's mindset is, but that flaw never really drives the plot at any point. It's just a flawed aspect of his character that he eventually works to get past, but he isn't really noticeably different after he does either (partly because he gets along with Rikku just fine beforehand since he doesn't know she's Al Bhed). --- |

Cecil is already that dude from the beginning of the game. although I feel like using main protagonists as examples isn't the best idea here because their character development is usually what drives the plot forward Side characters like Hope get their own arc, but their development rarely drives the plot. --- |

DESPAIRSTATS CXIV - 18/102 CXV - 10/100 CXVI - 39/100 CXVII - 69/100 CXVIII - 24/100 CXIX - 72/100 Other than Lightning, Hope is the only FFXIII character who's been able to have consistent success. He has three top 25 finishes in six contests, including one top 10. He does have a couple of mediocre performances to counterbalance that, but Hope has mostly done well for himself. However, due to his small resume, this poor finish hurts him quite a bit. Hope tumbles in the STATS from 69.07% to 62.39%, dropping from 16th to 24th place. Hope's numbers are the same in the New Era, but he only drops from 22nd to 25th because there are so few characters in the 60% range for some bizarre reason. He's narrowly behind Faris in the overall STATS, but he's narrowly ahead of her in the New Era. --- |
