The game doesn't "decide" to do anything outside of the react attacks; you're given control over the enemy's state. That's what the trigger attacks are for.

Also, Koei just completely killed off the Chinese voice and text options for Steam. The Chinese fanbase had already tanked it's review system and now they've completely hijacked it lol

Not gonna lie, I won't bother defending that. You had to go the extra mile to actually enable the Chinese options, they could've just kept it "hidden", but nope.

I'll mostly be compiling my thoughts from previous posts on the actual game board, but I'll also try to go into a bit of detail as well.

First off, enjoyment level compared to other games in the series:

Loving it.

I'm on Chapter 9 of Wu story, but so far I'm enjoying it more than a few games, such as 5 and 7. Those are the worst games in the series to me, though.

First impressions are that I'll enjoy it more in the longrun than 8, even if it's not quite as exciting as 8 was when it first released. But despite the 230 hours I've got in 8, I can't play it anymore as much as I've tried. The AI just fucking tanks it for me. This game's a bit better in that regard, and does have it's own sense of difficulty. It's also got a slower sense of progression, so it'll take damn near five times as long to make the same amount of progress as you would in any of the other games. That helps for longevity.

6, to date, had the best actual battlefield mechanics and 9 brought some of them back to a degree, but the execution isn't as good. I'm sure 9 will undergo many changes and advancements via DLC and expansions. Time will tell just how good the battlefield simulation can be, and I do believe it has the potential to be better and more immersive than 6's.

I'll always love 3. Best character designs, best music, best combat. As much fun as I'm having with 9, there's nothing Koei could do to it that would put it above 3 for me.

I might be liking it about as much as I did 4. For different reasons and whatnot, obviously, but it feels like the same level of enjoyment.

1 and 2 are 1 and 2. Love them. Not going to compare them.

A key difference that I feel between this game and other games in the series:

Honestly, it's just the most "what you see is what you get" game there is.

Also, the other games are good with getting that immediate satisfaction and blowing your load.

This game's got a bit of a slow burn to it and is about appreciating the massive scope of everything that is happening around you.

But at it's core, it's still a Dynasty Warriors game.

Complaints that I'll outright admit to is the FPS and travel. Now, I personally enjoy the travel and scenery and the feel of being part of an actual campaign, but for those who just want to jump in battle after battle with nothing in-between, this could be a pretty big turnoff. Massive battles with upwards of thousands of enemies are still there, but they're a bit spread out. Side missions still fill the screen with enemies, but they tend to be shorter with such simple objectives.

FPS seems to be patched on PS4 and players are mentioning considerable improvements. Steam has yet to be patched however, and I'm sure 360 will have to wait a tad bit longer as well.

Narrative is a lot better this time around. Dialogue scenes feature some jank, amateurish animation, but they feature the lesser characters much more than ever before. The cast benefits from this greatly. There's also proper cutscenes and the ones I've seen are great.

And I know I had more on my mind, but I'm blanking and with it being 3 in the morning, I doubt it's all coming back. So that's it for now, and I'll update this topic whenever I feel I have more to add.

Oh, yeah. New combat system shows promise but could use some work. Still pretty fun.

Yeah, Koei released a patch today and people are saying performance is much improved.

I agree about the button prompts. Not so much about the system itself or that the charge system was "perfectly good". The current system needs some work, but I think it has a higher ceiling overall.

I still maintain that renbu was the best thing for the series moving forward.

For the record, I like this game more than 8 if simply for the fact that the AI's more aggressive.



The AI's not always like this, but it's noticeably better than the past two main entries. Also, not every enemy has super armor.

Define rough. I've been playing it since I got home Sunday and I cannot really say I noticed anything that would have hindered my enjoyment on the game, that would be an issue on a more powerful console.

I can't say for sure myself, but I know people are having sub-30 FPS issues on the PS4 Pro. I can only imagine what it's like on the base console, and I at least know that people are very upset.

Not quite. It's still a musou through and through and despite the changes, it very much feels like a DW game.

It just has a lot of the typical open world features that you would find in a game like Elder Scrolls.

I'm playing the game and it's got a few issues, but it's fun. It's got your typical Warriors jankiness.

You might be waiting a decent while. Story Modes are pretty long and I'll probably do a write-up of sorts once I finish Wu's story mode. Or the very least, a handful of characters including Gan Ning's. There aren't really Kingdom story modes as they're individual again, but they're all part of the same timeline.

I'm playing on max with a rig that's a bit well under the recommended settings; with the exception of keeping Fog on medium.

Long story short, yes there are some FPS issues. However, they aren't quite as bad as people are exaggerating. One thing to note about the FPS is that it's all on-screen lag. Input-wise, the game played perfectly fine.

I did have a few other minor issues. The first was more egregious and almost wasn't "minor". When I first launched the game, I had an issue where the game would keep minimizing. However, it stopped after about the first 5 mins. By the time I got to the actual gameplay segments, it was done. And when I closed and relaunched the game to up the graphics settings, it wasn't doing it then either. It seemed to be a one and done deal.

The other is a crash. I got a "Dynasty Warriors 9 has stopped working" error message that happened when I already exited the game lol

Also, the recording footage is a bit blurry, but I can verify that the game, in actuality, is pretty crisp.

Finally, I'm fucking around a bit and I haven't quite gotten to the point where everything feels intuitive. I'm getting there, though. So expect some wonky play in the video.

Like, the series has some cool ass designs, settings, and a solid lore. I thought I would enjoy the hell out of Rogue One, but the sound effects and music were just too cheesy for me. And for such a bleak movie, it needed a bit more violent depictions. I'm not asking for Machete type stuff, but a solid amount of blood would be nice.

Otherwise, I'm all for shit like this:

Just know that it isn't easy to play, at all. The game's sort of on rails in that you are perpetually moving forward. You can break if you want, but you don't have complete freedom of movement. I mean, you do and you don't. The game takes place on various racing tracks, and it feels like you're gliding on ice.

There's also a combat aspect that demands you fight enemies from behind while facing the opposite direction in which you're currently moving. I found this incredibly tough.

Nah, it's actually pretty standard.

Famitsu slurps everything, but that more or less shows it isn't really any worse than your typical musou game.

It's really only the Western critics that are particularly harsh for this series.

For reference, here's the Famitsu scores for the other games:

DW2: 31/40
DW3: 34/40
DW4: 36/40
DW5: 36/40
DW6: 33/40
DW7: 36/40
DW8: 36/40
DW9: 35/40

Keep in mind that Famitsu scores are based on a collection of four different reviews of the game. So while 9-9-9-9 could get you 36/40, 9-10-9-8 could get you the same results.

DW9 got a score of 9/9/8/9, while DW8 got all 9's.
