If you look at the draw rate in the Zhang Liao video, it's pretty freakin' nuts. At 5:25-30ish, there's about 500 enemies on the screen with no pop-in and no FPS drop. On a technical level, this is without a doubt the best running and best looking DW game yet, surpassing 6.

Also, for the longest time Dynasty Warriors has had PS2 syndrome where it only really focused on marginal improvements to itself as a series, and never really tried to be "modern". Tekken and the WWE games are the same way, as opposed to something like Grand Theft Auto, which has always tried to push the envelope much more in comparison. This is the first game since 6 where it actually looks like they're trying to make a game that looks like it was made in 2017. It shows in not only the graphical improvements, but the buttery smooth animations. Framerate has also been improved.

DW8 is really good. Just keep in mind that by this point, the games are purely fanservice. Artificial difficulty's at it's absolute worst in the newer games. DW9 looks to be changing that though, based on some earlier footage.

From the way they've described missions and eras, I think the system sounds pretty robust. I'd imagine one of the reasons for going open-world was to take advantage of that kind of stuff specifically.

With that said, the game's going to take a hit in some areas. Notably, there's going to a lot of clones in this game. Doesn't really bother me, as I'll mostly stick to Gan Ning and a few other characters and I like the weapons shown so far, but a lot of people aren't particularly happy. Zhang He losing his claws does hurt.

And don't be fooled by the open world. The biggest change is the graphical overhaul, but at heart this is still very much a DW game with janky animation, camp voice acting, and shallow combat. In other words, everything we love about Dynasty Warriors!

The combat has been expanded a bit, but I don't think it'll matter too much. Omega-Force aren't the most competent designers. Basically, in addition to the usual charge system, you have access to 4 other attacks by holding down a shoulder button and pressing one of the corresponding face buttons. These give you access to a launcher, stun-attack, "react" attack(finisher), and a special attack unique to each character a la Warriors Orochi/Samurai Warriors. These can also change your character's "state" and alters your normal attack string. It sounds great, but it'll all come down to the AI like it always has.

It's surprising that I actually got into video games, because I didn't care much for the game itself. I was just wowed at controlling something on a TV screen and the whacky creatures and colors.

Although, we also had a PICO but I barely ever got to play it and I don't remember much about it.
