One way they could shake up the Mario Bros. formula without being too drastic is to make it so that the two main forms actually have their own advantages, instead of just being inferior to the powerups.

Like give them a certain ability that can only be done in that form, or branching paths that can only be accessed by certain forms. Such small additions could noticeably change both play styles and level structure, and get back to those branching overworld paths from both SMB3 and World.

Going back to listening to music while reading, a couple weeks ago something bizarre happened. I was listening to music while reading this manga Seishun Pop, and there was a scene where the main character was also listening to music. It showed his iPod, and he was playing the same song as me. Escape by the brilliant green. Man, the odds of that..

I was at Walmart and saw that they had Gargantia for $10, so I said what the heck.

They actually have a pretty decent selection for a mainstream store, and cheap too. I got Akira for $5 to replace my VHS, and I've been eyeing Dragon Ball Super part 1 for $25.

I listen to music when reading manga. Sometimes normal songs, but mostly soundtracks or other BGM. It gets to where I start to associate certain songs with certain series, especially if I happened to hear it for the first time while reading that series.

On a related note, I like to listen to rock/high energy songs while playing Smash Bros., particularly VAMPS.

Why is it that the series gets criticized for being predictable and samey, when that's exactly what people love about other series, like Kirby?

When it comes to mainline Kirby games, you pretty much know exactly what to expect, with some new abilities thrown in and a new storyline. NSMB is more or less the same, except the story is almost exactly the same too.

Both series offer decent platforming fun, and seem to go by the "don't fix what isn't broken" mentality. I guess Kirby tends to come up with new game modes or collectibles which are usually fun.

She doesn't fit for several reasons, one her hair yuck, I would like her more if she had black hair like a normal black chick and brown might work as well, the blue hair just says pandering to Tumblr. Second, she's too tall, make her the same size as the rest of the Powerpuff Girls. Third, what's up with those hips? She looks like an experiment by non-anime fans to create a loli but they missed the point as she's too tall.

Spiral - the manga is fantastic. Haven't seen the anime but I heard they made up a weak ending. But the main plot is great, with lots of individual mysteries and cases that all connect to the larger ongoing mystery of the Blade Children.

Big O - everyone needs to watch this, because it's just plain awesome. Gets a bit too complicated for my taste in the second half, kind of like Eva.

R.O.D - the three episode OVA is amazing. The TV series is a bit different, but also really good. It takes place a few years later with different protagonists, with some minor characters returning. The first few episodes switch between action and slice of life, and the real plot doesn't kick off until near the end of the first season. Also has an amazing soundtrack that I listen to nearly every day.

Kare Kano - this one's kind of odd for me. It's actually pretty good and enjoyable; it's a well-written character-driven drama about a couple coming together and facing their problems, with the music and visuals complementing it perfectly. And doesn't get too heavy handed thanks to a sizeable dose of comedy. But for some reason it can never hold my interest for long.

Cromartie - It's a little bit like Daily Lives of High School Boys, if every character was a badass delinquent. Also there's a robot, a gorilla, and Freddie Mercury.

I can't think of any games that have made me cry before. I haven't played very many visual novels, or the list would probably be pretty high.

I didn't cry during the climax of 999, though it tugged my heartstrings right out.

I think I may have cried in Legend of Dragoon, when they're in Hell and Lavitz and Dart say their goodbyes. Bromances like that can get to me.

That's a tough call. Rachel is fine as hell and does indeed mature over time, but she's also high maintenance as mentioned. I do like Phoebe, but there's no way I could deal with her maximum quirkiness every single day. Monica is very stable and competent but a control freak.

Being able to react without missing anything is an underrated benefit, especially if you're watching with other people. You can pack more content without a laugh track, but if you take too long to enjoy a joke you may be left asking what happened directly after that. Or rewinding every once in a while, which isn't an ideal way to enjoy a show.

To begin with, I specifically said his origin story, as in the part that was explained when Raditz came to Earth. It's common knowledge that Dragon Ball was originally based on Journey to the West, and that has no bearing one way or the other on this. But maybe it would have been more accurate to say the Saiyan arc in general was influenced by Superman.

There's not much point in pointing out all the ways the two are different, because if they were exactly the same, it would just be plagiarism. We know Dragon Ball is inspired by JttW, but it's still different in many ways. The point is that there are several similarities.

You are right that I can't find any direct quote confirming it though. But it's a commonly held fan theory. In any case, I think you're blowing this whole thing out of proportion, from as soon as I mentioned anime.

I thought the Superman influence was obvious. Being sent to just before the destruction of his home planet, fighting for good and against others of his kind. (And a possible nod where Superman gets powered up by the sun, and Goku does by the moon.)

There's all kind of influences or references to other series in DBZ. Lots of tech and the Namek/Frieza arc have Star Wars influence, and Androids/Cell had Terminator.

Well most series aren't meta enough to use the term superhero. Most of the people who fight for good would just be called "the good guys." But the likes of Sailor Moon, the Z Fighters, and Team Urameshi would fall under the category if they were made in America. Heck, Goku's origin story was directly inspired by Superman.
