Yeah... I have no idea what that's about, and triggering them consecutively doesn't seem to actually move the tree anyway. All I ever see it do is change the words displayed on the bottom and sides.

Here's the diagram:
WjGW5D0

The icon on the far left represents the element you started the combo with, in this case Fire. The two icons in the next column along indicate which elements can be used to continue the combo, in this case Fire and Water. Once you use one of those, half of the options in the third column will disappear, and the remaining 1-2 will be the elements that can be used to finish the combo (if #2 is Fire, Fire and Light. If #2 is Water, Fire and Ice). The text indicates which effect will be blocked by finishing the combo with that element (and not, as I initially thought, that you'll be sealing by using that element at any point in the combo), so half of the text will disappear after you use a second special.

Basically, in this case, it indicates the four options you have after starting with Fire:
Fire-->Fire-->Fire (Seal Self-Destruct)
Fire-->Fire-->Light (Seal Affinity Down)
Fire-->Water-->Fire (Seal Self-Destruct)
Fire-->Water-->Ice (Seal Shackle Blade)

Finishing those combos will add, respectively, a Fire, Light, Fire, or Ice orb to the target, and it's that orb that blocks the status effect and can be broken in a chain attack for fun bonuses.

It will. I was going through the tutorials and continually getting bombarded with new info and battle mechanics and I was like bruuuuuuuuhhhhhhhh

It's one of those things that you learn by doing, as opposed to learn by reading.

It also doesn't help that they introduce so many different things that are just called "___Combo" in short succession, and there's no in-game manual to act as a reference after those tutorials. The game could definitely do a better job of explaining itself (especially where you aren't necessarily going to have the elements you need to practice right away, depending on what Blades you've got at the time), but once I looked up how it works again I picked it up quite quickly. It's very intuitive once you get over that initial hump.

Colloquially, it is. "Ephebophilia" is only ever used by people who are trying to avoid having to believe that somebody they like is a pedo, and cling to even the most pedantic alternative they can find to that. "Pedophilia" is broadly used as a blanket term for attraction to minors.

Except it's flat out wrong to use it as a blanket term like that.

Do you have a better option for a blanket term? "Creepy weirdo that sleeps with minors" is a concept that does come up often enough that it could stand to have a convenient single term. "Pedophile" being the best-known term that falls under that umbrella, it's pretty understandable that it's been adopted for that broader purpose. If you've got a better option, by all means, present it and start promoting it, but until then, you should probably accept how the vernacular language is evolving.

And if you think that the difference between a 5 y/o and a 16 y/o is merely "pedantic" then there's something very wrong with you.

Is that not how the distinction is used? "This guy's a pedophile! What a creep!" "Technically it's ephebophilia if the victim's a teenager, and I'm going to hope that nitpicking about this is enough to deflect from the fact that I'm not commenting on whether or not the dude's a creep." There are certainly differences, which are reflected in that statutory rape and child rape are distinct charges, but those who use the word "ephebophilia" generally aren't as interested in that distinction as they are in trying to use a label that has no vernacular negative connotations (because nobody else ever uses it).

Let's demonstrate: Should the allegations against him prove true, would you consider Roy Moore to be a creep?

Also, side note, is the battle system in XCX-2 similar to the others games in the Xenoblade series?

It's got the same basic "autoattack while waiting for arts to recharge" thing going on, but they made some significant changes to it. Most notably, you can only have one of your three assigned blades active at a time, and each blade offers three arts and a special, with the ability to switch between blades on a cooldown. Additionally, arts recharge as you autoattack, rather than over time, and you can no longer autoattack while moving. Using arts charges up the special attack, which has four tiers, and using an art just after an autoattack connects boosts the art's damage and also fills more of the special gauge, so it's important to consider art timing. Because there's a huge variety of Blades to choose from, with different weapon types (which dictates available arts), roles, elements, and specials, this offers quite a bit of customization.

The biggest change comes in the emphasis on combos. There are several combo types, as follows:

Driver Combo - The basic Break-->Topple thing that's familiar by now, with the added steps of Launching toppled enemies into the air (which just looks funny), and Smashing them back down for massive damage.

Blade Combo - When you use a special of a given element (any level), a diagram will appear in the upper-right of the screen indicating which other elements can be chained together with that. If you follow that diagram by using level 2 and then level 3 specials of those elements (can come from party members as well) before the timer expires, extra elemental effects will be added to those specials, ending in a huge amount of bonus damage if you complete the combo. Completing a Blade Combo will make an elemental orb start circling the target, preventing them from using a particular status effect.

Fusion Combo - If you progress through a Driver Combo or Blade Combo while the other combo type is active (i.e. Topple the target between the level 1 and level 2 specials), the combination of the two will have extra effects, generally extra damage and extending the durations of the Driver/Blade Combo effects.

Chain Attack - Like other games, filling the party meter will let you start a chain attack, which in this case means selecting specials for each party member to use. If you break one of the elemental orbs mentioned earlier by hitting the target enough times (using the opposing element to that of the orb helps this), you'll extend the chain attack (each round consists of each party member using one special, and the specials' level goes up with subsequent rounds), as well as filling up yet another gauge that deals massive damage when it's full.

It's a lot on paper, but I'm finding that it's fairly intuitive once I've gotten the hang of it and learned to read the Blade Combo diagram that appears, and it offers a very pleasing number of options for customizing the party to maximize damage. It's not exactly the same battle system as prior games, but there are a lot of similarities, and it's no less dynamic.

Its pretty crazy how 3 levels can make you overpowered.

Level differences dictate accuracy bonuses/penalties, with a huge jump between +5 and +6 levels (-40% hit rate and -120% hit rate, respectively), where the enemy's level switches from yellow to red. When you're facing a higher-level enemy without enough bonus accuracy, you end up missing a lot, which not only means you aren't doing damage on those hits (which is devastating on higher-cooldown arts), it also means you're building up your talent arts more slowly, and most significantly, your Tension is going to drop. Having low Tension also provides a significant accuracy penalty (at the lowest level, you'll have a 5% hit rate) and crit rate penalty, so the problem just gets worse.

Basically, if you're having trouble beating anything, the first thing you should be looking to do is improve your accuracy, whether by leveling up to reduce the penalty (which isn't an option for the superbosses, since all but one are 6+ levels above 99), stacking more agility, or using Night Vision. It'll help tremendously.

The easiest way to tackle higher-level enemies is to use a party of Melia, Riki and Sharla, link Melia's skill that gives increased accuracy with Ether attacks to the other two, and put heavy armour on Riki so he can tank effectively. You won't be doing a lot of damage, but you'll at least be able to hit them, and Melia's DoTs are very powerful for longer fights. If you want to use physical attackers, you'll want to give them Agility VI and Night Vision VI gems and fight at night to fix their accuracy, but even so you're going to have a bit of a rough time until you get better skill links (like the one that makes all double attacks be crits, paired with a Double Attack VI gem and the skill that heals on crits).

There's probably something in the contract that allows Disney to back out if EA fucks up this badly.

I kind of doubt it. If EA were actually causing monetary damages to the brand as a whole, maybe, but screwing up one video game isn't grounds for breaking a contract. This whole situation is going to do nothing to SW movie or merchandise sales, just make people less willing to trust EA with future Star Wars games.

Bonus points because Battlefront 2015 did have an abundance of cosmetic unlocks, so it's not like there's no precedent for it in the series (and it was done without grievously violating the canon, no less, as much as that means anything in a fanservice crossover game).

For even more bonus points, people have been doing some datamining and found that there are additional skins and costumes lurking in the game, presumably with the intent of releasing them at a later date. It's not only a flimsy, nonsensical excuse, it's a bold-faced lie.

Little of column A, little of column B. The initial stock drop would have been because removing microtransactions hurt the game's earning potential, rather than in direct response to the outrage, but I could see that further loss of value might be due to the fact that the outrage is still ongoing, and EA's damage control efforts aren't doing a particularly good job of restoring the game's image. That could definitely cause more investors to jump ship, since there isn't much reason to have faith that EA will turn this around any time soon.

Canadian citizens have rights, which the government is not supposed to violate. Omar Khadr is a Canadian citizen, and therefore has the same rights as any one of us. Even if I were paying attention, though, and they were still releasing on Steam, I doubt I'd be getting too many of their games. I almost never buy non-Nintendo stuff at release (since it's not like Nintendo stuff's going to get cheaper if I wait), and by the time the games get discounted enough, there's enough unsavory information out there about their games that I don't think I'd buy them anyway. *Shrug*

Unbridled9 posted...
We've got a LOT of linear games that sell extremely well (just look at Pokemon)

I wouldn't really call Pokemon linear. Its story is, yes, but a lot of the game's appeal comes from exploring and collecting Pokemon, which is much more in line with open-world gameplay and the kind of ongoing player engagement EA and other big publishers love. It's not linearity that's bad for them, it's players finishing their games and putting them down (since that's when they stop buying microtransactions). So long as there's enough postgame content to keep players playing for a while, it doesn't matter how linear the story is.

Quite simply, Visceral's Star Wars game was canned because it wasn't going to make EA any additional money after the initial sale. They tried turning a linear single-player game into a cash cow with Dead Space 3, and they weren't able to do it without people getting uppity and disliking the game for introducing needless grinding and tedium. EA isn't interested in just having games sell well. They want those games to keep giving them money for years to come. Publishers have been saying that linear single-player experiences have been dead for years now, but that's less commenting on any actual observed trend, and more trying to convince consumers that they don't want something that's less profitable for them.

While that's not a good position to take, it's important to recognize that it's in response to the attitude that legitimate sexual assault allegations should be downplayed or ignored because it's more important to avoid false accusations. In far too many cases, that attitude is even taken so far that victims have been prosecuted for making false accusations (typically based on minor inconsistencies in their testimony, since that tends to happen when somebody's interrogated without legal counsel shortly after being traumatized), only to find out a few years later when their attacker is arrested on more concrete charges that the allegations were completely legitimate.

It's important to avoid falsely accusing people of crimes, but that goes both ways: Making a false accusation is also a crime, and alleged victims of sexual assault should be presumed innocent of that crime until proven guilty. That means providing the resources victims need to be able to provide testimony that's usable as evidence, and not placing them immediately into an interrogation situation that's likely to pressure them into slipping up and failing to convict their attacker. Some police departments do this, which is great. Others still have the presumed attitude that any allegations are probably false, which is bad.

Also, a sizable chunk of the "court of public opinion" problem with sexual assault is the prevailing feeling that law enforcement is unlikely to solve the problem (see: Turner, one of the rare cases where a violent sexual offender was actually convicted, but just got a slap on the wrist for being a good boy that made a mistake). That doesn't excuse kangaroo courts, but it does explain them, and citing the kangaroo courts as a reason not to bother fixing the underlying cause of them is completely faulty, backwards logic.

Generally, the higher the last three digits, the better. The first digit is the generation, and while a higher generation will typically beat a lower-generation CPU of a similar tier, if they're different tiers, the comparison gets trickier.

Any money spent on these products should be considered ephemeral entertainment, on par with theme park tickets, or overpriced themepark funnel cake.

Except still with a much, much greater entertainment:cost ratio than you'll get from those things. As much as games shutting down like this sucks, you still come out pretty well if you put even 10 hours into it.

Well, first off you have to have *actual* arguments to back up your opinion. Even if it's on something subjective you need at least some claim to validity.

Secondly, don't be up and in your face about it. One of the quickest ways to get someone to reject you is to come up into someones face and be like 'The world is flat you sheeple and I have evidence to prove that you've been knowingly lied too all these years by evil conspiritors!' That's not going to make you credible (even if it's true... which it isn't). It's just going to make people think you're crazy.

Thirdly. KEEP CALM! You will be mocked and insulted for it; so it's important to keep your cool. If you can come off looking like the better man you can get a lot more people to listen to you. After all, you stayed calm and reasoned while your opponent was shrieking at you.

Pretty much. Nobody's going to take you seriously if you can't support your opinion, and nobody's going to take you seriously if you come across as just being contrary for the sake of stirring up trouble. Even if you do those things, you'll still get people who'll dismiss you for being contrarian, but they're the sort of people that would look for a reason to dismiss anything they disagree with, and "you're just being contrarian" happens to be the easiest option for them. You can safely ignore those people.

I'm irrationally bothered by that article's decision to use "fake news" in place of "satire." Trump's America, ladies and gentlemen.

Our current enemies don't give two s***s about the Geneva Convention.

Your allies, however, do. That's why your allies care about your enemies. The Geneva Convention exists not to let its member nations scream "you're not following the rules" when somebody breaks it, but rather to unite those nations behind the cause of stopping any nation that does perpetrate such war crimes.

TheWorstPoster posted...
I say we should simply abolish it, and win all wars, at ALL costs.

That's pretty easy for somebody to say who will never in any way be involved in bringing about such an outcome. If you aren't ready to personally mow down a militant's grandmother to get to him, then you're in no place to suggest that anyone else should do such a thing.

It's an inevitability, but one which should be minimized as much as possible.

Neither of which is a great example of waste, especially Christmas trees since the trees served no practical purpose in the first place.

Except for the huge tracts of land that are used to farm Christmas trees, and of course the water and fertilizer/soil nutrients that go into raising them. Those trees don't come out of nowhere. Even if they are being harvested from an existing forest, that's disrupting the local ecosystem by removing a habitat and shaking up ground-level vegetation. All for a decoration that lasts 3-4 weeks tops before being thrown away.

Funny how all of a sudden most of you guys claim the UK's Committee is irrelevant and out of touch just because it their statement doesn't fit your narrative.

I think it's more a matter of thinking they're wrong than anything else, and the government is certainly not above logical scrutiny. People have reasons for lumping loot boxes in with gambling. The UK's focus here is on whether or not there's a monetary prize involved, which most people in favour of loot box regulations don't see as being particularly relevant. Instead, those people focus on the psychological principles that are exploited by gambling, which are also exploited by loot boxes. Gambling regulations exist to protect people from that exploitation (which can easily result in addiction), and therefore should also be applied to any other examples of that exploitation.

Basically, it doesn't matter if it's gambling or not. What matters is that it should be regulated for the same reason gambling is regulated.

This method allows Blizzard to continually update Overwatch with free maps, modes, heroes, and patches for everyone.

As I mentioned in your other topic (and you failed to address), Nintendo's pretty comfortably managing to provide a steady stream of updated content to Splatoon and ARMS without charging more than the shelf price of $60. Perhaps Blizzard should be asking Nintendo for advice on running online games if they're concerned about their ability to do the same.

False dichotomy. You're already accepting that genders aren't necessarily binary by accepting a trans man, why insist that sexual orientations are still binary?
