I think Metroid is more of a quality series as a whole, the worst Metroid games are like a Gameboy game and a DS pinball spinoff (and Other M, granted).

Mega Man's ethos was "keep shitting them out or so help me god". Mega Man 4-6 were diminishing returns at best, and 7 and 8 are barely mentioned in the same breath as the first six except for 8's ridiculous, laughable dubbing. Mega Man X is GOATed like Mega Man 2 is, but the next two games rolled back some of the biggest changes and improvements to the X series for the sake of formula and none of the later games were quite as good as the first one - X6 and X7 are just outright dogshit games.

You have Rockman Soccer, Sega Genesis ports of the first three games, a virtual board game, a racing game - and while the results varied, and those ideas all kind of kick ass on paper, they're relegated to curios nowadays because they didn't live up to quality standards for the most part.

I love Mega Man. I also love Metroid. In my opinion, Metroid is a much more consistent game franchise with a higher percentage of hits than duds.

I'm in discord servers with the CEople I care about the most, and I still post on Tumblr. As far as online communities go, I'm satisfied.

Judging from the responses, this isn't an infringement on the rights of Catholic people, it's expelling candidates based on whether - by their own admission - they would be intolerant of queer people. If you let a bigot adopt a queer kid with zero impunity, that would be worse than not letting a Catholic couple adopt a kid who might end up being queer. The chance of abuse is greater for the former example than the latter.

Reminds me of that story where a dumbass Catholic missionary sailed out to "educate" the Sentinelese people of Christ. He broke international law and got murdered, the international law being in place to prevent needless death and to protect the Sentinelese people. There's this institutionalised entitlement where you see a person or a group who you see as lesser, and your right to infringe on their beliefs and general quality of life trumps their right to self-expression or self-determination. Then when the relevant factors present themselves and put you at a disadvantage, you bitch and moan that you're actually be disadvantaged party.

I kind of feel like Larian Studios is an odd double-A studio, both independent and experienced with triple-A development owing to their experiences with them in the 2000s. You're not gonna find an indie dev this consistent and strong in like 99.9% of indie devs, but most indie devs don't have the history that Larian Studios has had on both sides of the fence.

They've managed to develop a brand recognition and a sense of quality that some studios could only dream of, being one of the only successful independent game studios to come out of the Kickstarter scene after working with publishers during their early days. It's taken a lot of hard work and time to build the sort of reputation and product quality that they've developed partially due to their experience working with publishers in the past. Most studios don't have the chance, nor do they have the staff, funding or passion that comes with extended game development like Larian games.

I'm sympathetic, but Larian has just put the time and effort in and come out the other side in sterling silver. It's not quite as cut and dry as being the cream of the crop of indie devs, but they sure as shit are the cream of the crop of indie devs.

Modern triple-A game development is often unsustainable, relying on crunch and high staff turnover in order to produce a Diablo or a Borderlands or a Street Fighter. To that end, I can understand where this sentiment is coming from.

That being said, Baldur's Gate 3 was an early access title that's only just getting its big push now after years of active development and playability. Perhaps it was able to be produced on a more sustainable model. It's also self-published, rather than having Activision or EA levels of demand or funding.

Baldur's Gate 3 may become the new standard in this style of game, and I understand the exasperation because not every studio can do that. Historically, that sort of breakthrough ala CoD or Mass Effect or whatever has come from a big publisher bankrolling a game and throwing people, money and advertising at it. As far as I can tell though, this has been a steady, years-long passion project from a group of independent devs that has naturally grown and developed in a playable state over the course of years. This is the fruits of the dev's constant labor. It's worthy of its praise, and if it becomes a new standard, I think that comes from the sheer quality that the devs have managed to accomplish with their unconventional development cycle.

So yeah, gotta say, I disagree with this take. Unless I'm totally wrong here, this is hardly the enemy that people are making it out to be.

People have been eating animals for millenia, and as omnivores we get our nutrients from both meat and plants. To that end, eating fish is fine.

Ethically, there is an issue with factory farming vs sustainably farming wild fish, with the former existing because people don't abide by the latter. At least in the past, farmed salmon weren't even naturally pink - they were fed dye pellets. So there may be an ethical concern, but that goes beyond the simple act of eating fish.

Regarding whether it's suffering or not, I feel like there's a unique religious bent that people came up with that places us above the natural order, as if having complex thoughts and opposable thumbs aren't enough. Religion, at best, is a reflection of your own personal values distributed through a third party to help hold you accountable, even if that third party doesn't exist. Animals don't have religion - bears eat salmon and sharks eat other fish all the time for survival. It's unpleasant, but it's an everyday part of life. In my opinion, a little suffering is necessary to get by - and just about everyone suffers in the end. It's the circle of life.

So basically, it's fine biologically, it's a bit iffy from a consumerist standpoint and it's a mixed bag depending on your religious stance. I still err on the side of it being okay

Mortal Kombat games have been launching with pre-order DLC ever since X. The latest game has also launched a trailer for the first wave of DLC, and the actual-ass base game comes out in September.

Mortal Kombat 9 was banned from Australia. It released in like 2011 and it was only legally available in Australia after 2013 bc of the legalisation, there was apparently a sincere effort to intercept any copy of the game that came onto Australian shores at the time. The same way there was an inalienable right to censor and fuck up Left 4 Dead 2, MK9 (and Hotline Miami 2, to this day) was illegal and could be seized as contraband.

When MK9 was one of the first games unbanned by the decision, God of War: Ascension was one of the first brand new releases to gain the R18+ rating.

It still exists, it's just not on top of the world any more. Like we don't have Poison on the radio, but if you know what's up, you've given King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard a go.

And it's no different from other genres like disco or electronic. Dua Lipa is kinda carrying the torch of disco right now, with "nu-disco" being a thing since the late 90's, and that Ellie Goulding "Miracles" song is probably the biggest 90's club throwback I've ever heard on the radio. Rock has the occasional turn in the spotlight, look at that Led Zeppelin tribute band or Manskin, and the early 2000's had a sort of grungy "nu-rock" sound that yielded to trashy, dated radio rock. King Gizzard continue to push the envelope, and other bands like the Chats are pushing rock and other rock subgenres to new areas after over a decade of stagnation.

Rock is only dead if you can't be assed looking for it.

I've got this wart on my finger, it's been bugging me for months. I used to have a cluster of them on my thumb, but after a while they just kinda... dried up and fell off as dead skin. You can barely tell they were there.

I've been picking at this wart just in case the same thing happened, but it was still alive inside my finger. I got carried away and yanked some of it out, it hurt like a bitch but it was just kinda sticking out. So I clenched my teeth and got a cloth, and just... yanked the rest of it out.

As far as I can tell, warts have roots that go down into your skin. I dunno if I got the whole root, maybe it'll just grow back, but I got some of it y'know.

I'm skeptical, only because Yoshimitsu's picture is a bunch of illegible colours and shapes. The whole "handheld shaky-cam" thing is a feint that fake leakers do sometimes to legitimise their leaks, I think by fudging the Yoshi picture they're trying to bank on the fact that he usually looks alien and weird and wouldn't come out right in a picture like this.

Also, look at the second screenshot. Azucena is the only new character with a fleshed out description, and she's the only newcomer who's been revealed. We already know her personality is "muh coffee". Victor is a generic-ass soldier dude and Reina's description is a poorly done fanfic plot. I wouldn't put it past modern Tekken, and I'll eat my words if it's true, but I think the other two newcomers being so bare bones compared to the one new character we already know are a sign that this is fake. Reina in particular makes me think the leaker is trolling.

So yeah, I'm skeptical.

At best, I think the Mandela Effect is a fancy way of trying to legitimise ignorance, made in good faith but having a negative effect. Like hey, here's a thought experiment, a room full of people didn't know that Nelson Mandela was the president of South Africa - were they simply misinformed/subject to a fit of group hysteria, or did they come from an alternate fucking universe where their version of reality was actually true? At worst, I think the Mandela Effect is a deliberate move to destabilise truth and facts in favour of pushing misinformation and "alternative facts". The Berenstain Bears thing was an internet trend and a real social thing where people genuinely thought it was pronounced Berenstein. It happens. People later claiming that the Mandela Effect was actually always called the MANDALA Effect and redefining what it means is a blatant attempt to manipulate the truth.

Consider the mental gymnastics you've seen from Trumpers and qanon supporters and TERFs and shit, the way they willingly bend the truth to serve a version of reality that makes them a good guy fighting some latent evil because they "connected the dots" right, even if what they're saying is patently untrue or doesn't make sense. I think that has roots in the Mandela Effect.

It's an anti-intellectual viewpoint that legitimises ignorance and encourages conspiratorial thinking, no matter how ridiculous the outcome is - like coming from an alternate universe where a Nobel Prize winner whose struggle helped to end apartheid actually died in prison, and his lasting legacy was mostly posthumous. This might ring hollow since I'm 28, but let me tell you about wasted time. From the ages of 18-25, I was in a toxic and codependent friendship - before that, I was being bullied at school and at home from the ages of 6-18, and starting at age 15 my mum began dating an emotionally volatile drunk. That toxic friendship was everything I had.

In 2021, that friendship imploded. I reacted badly to something that happened and I left - it took me over six months to fully cut the cord because I was trying to be "fair" and come back to that friendship so no-one would feel bad about what happened. I tried to squash my emotional reaction to prevent anyone else from getting hurt. But I couldn't. It led to me starting from rock-bottom, making new friends and re-establishing old friendships that hadn't been nurtured in that prior environment.

Since then? I've made a few new friends from work, and I have new friends who treated me better than my former best friend ever did. I got a new job, I moved into my own place and I made enough money to have a massive blow-out holiday.

Things have been touch-and-go financially since then, but the holiday was unforgettable and I feel a lot more healthy and self-expressed than I did before.

Your salad days may be over, but there's still time to grow and change. You can still live it up, save some money and go on a big holiday. You can still meet new people. Again, I may be younger than you, but I wasn't planning to be alive past the age of 20. I wasn't planning to die, but I wasn't planning to be alive either. And I had some dark fucking days.

Even now, I think about all the time I lost and all the ways I've had to learn things the hard way. And yet right now, today, I've been able to bounce back and make some new memories to help combat the constant flood of bad ones from my past. I've come from nothing, and I've been able to live it up in the end. It was later than usual, and I can't say I enjoyed the same reckless abandon as your average conventionally attractive young adult, but I got to move past my faults and really lose myself in the moment.

Initially I was wondering what the fuss was. For every Metroid Prime HD there's been like three Etrian Odyssey HD Collections y'know, port pricing is inconsistent.

Here's where I get skeptical:

The digital version is releasing in two weeks, and the physical version is launching in October. This is something that happened with the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition back in 2021.

The development studio, Double Eleven Studios, are basically a porthouse whose ports include the Lego Harry Potter games to later console generations and Crackdown 3 to Windows. Their ports are generally considered to be middle-of-the-road at best.

This comes on the tail-end of the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy: Definitive Edition, which was cobbled together by a studio who created dogshit ports of the three PS2-era games for mobile phones. That collection was priced at a premium, and earlier releases which were more competent ports were subsequently delisted - leaving the subpar "Definitive Edition" as the only legal way to obtain and enjoy these games on modern platforms.

Red Dead Redemption is apparently hard as fuck to port, because there's something about the source code. I could be wrong here, but it's taken them this long to release a single, barebones port with the same graphics - allegedly due to woes regarding the source code.

I'm not concerned about the price, because eventually I'm gonna get some of these Etrian Oddysey games that they sell at a premium. If it's a good port, I'll consider getting it - shit, MK11 isn't a great port and I still bought it on Switch because it was $14.

What I'm concerned about is 2K/Rockstar's recent mishaps, and how closely this remaster seems to hem to the release cycle of their last disaster. The GTA trilogy collection was revealed maybe a month or two before it released, digital only with a physical release later on (suggesting the software isn't finished yet, with a more complete version on-disc later on) - RDR is set to launch one week from now. The visual woes are different, with the Trilogy having an overblown "remaster" and RDR launching with unimproved 7th gen graphics, but the concern for visual quality still exists. The studio porting these games are known for trashy, unappealing ports. There are very real warning signs here.

I want the port to be good. I want something fun to play on my Switch. My concern isn't the price - my concern is that this remaster is hemming way too close to the GTA trilogy remaster, right down to a very narrow launch window and delayed physical release of the remaster.

Let's use a third-party example: the NES game Crystalis on NSO, developed by SNK.

Before they released that game on NSO, Nintendo had to get in contact with SNK. They make contact, make small talk, talk about collaboration. Maybe the whole thing with Terry Bogard in Smash Ultimate comes up, I dunno. But somewhere in that conversation, Nintendo offers SNK a licensing agreement where for a sum of money, they can use Crystalis in their Nintendo Switch Online service indefinitely. They reach a deal, SNK agrees to let them put Crystalis on NSO, Nintendo makes it happen.

The same goes for Breath of Fire or Fighter's Generation: Nintendo establishes contact with Capcom, they agree to collaborate, Nintendo asks if they can have those titles for their SNES NSO app. Capcom asks for money, Nintendo pays up, they give permission for Nintendo to use those ROMs in that service.

Now - Nintendo have a partial stake in the Pokemon franchise. But they don't own the whole thing. In order to get Pokemon games onto the Switch, they need the other rights-holders to agree to put them on the Switch.

The other rights-holders disagree. They offer a couple of side-games in line with their existing plans.

Nintendo might have access to the ROMs of those games, but they don't have permission to use them. Making them available without permission opens Nintendo up to a big fuck-off lawsuit.

That's what we're saying when we say "it's not that easy". Nintendo don't own a majority stake in the Pokemon franchise, they share ownership equally alongside two other entities.

If those two entities don't want to do anything with older Pokemon games, Nintendo can't do jack shit. They need permission from the other rights-holders, and they clearly haven't gotten permission from the other rights-holders. Yeah, some rogue developer can just do it anyway, but it would be illegal and heads would fucking roll. The only way this happens is of the other rights-holders agree to release the fucking games.

Let's say I have a video of Budd Dwyer's suicide. Just because I have the video, it doesn't mean I can just upload it to fucking YouTube. Physically, sure - I have the ability to upload a video of a man shooting himself in the mouth. But there's a whole mess that would create that would cause a lot of trouble for everyone, legally and personally and all sorts of ways. "Yeah but you have the video!!" - but imagine the issues it would cause if I just uploaded it somewhere for my own edification. It's a stupid fucking idea.
