I think I was about 12 or 13 years old, when I inadvertently offended a Jewish friend of mine. my parents were born and raised in east Africa, and had Catholic backgrounds, but besides weddings, my siblings and I basically had no religious education at all (my mom wanted us to be Catholic, but my dad felt we should decide for ourselves). anyway, so when I'm about 12 or 13, we started reading Night for one of our classes, and since I don't know anything about anything about any religion, I ask my friend sitting next to me if the Star of David was the devil star he just says "no", and we leave it at that, but from the reading of the book, I learned more about the Holocaust, the persecution of Jewish people, etc...and then a little while later, when he turns 13, I saw him wearing a small necklace with the Star of David. I never felt so bad about being ignorant about something. You were young dude and if you didn't know, you didn't know. It's ok --- Common sense says it may not taste good, but it'll make a turd.
