You can write in multiple languages in N++. They have a highlighted feature for over a dozen of those languages, if I remember right.

The only "viable" alternative to prisons in terms of stopping criminals from being able to continue committing crimes would be angry mobs deciding whether or not to kill the criminal, which would be even more barbaric.

That said, abolish for-profit prisons and the punitive prison system used in countries like the US is deeply, deeply flawed.

It's not by design we are held accountable for the death or inmate. So yeah it sucks but we will do everything we can to keep a inmate alive. One dies and it's lawsuit heaven. Blame lawsuits if you need someone to blame.

I don't think "if you're unable to keep your charges alive then don't detain them" is an unreasonable ask.

It can be a real thing but most of the time it's just bullshit by students who didn't bother to study for the test.

I think a lot of people believe Judge's have more discretion than they actually do. It's not like they just pick a number out of a hat to sentence people to, there's tons of sentencing guidelines and aggravating and mitigating factors and such. If the sentence was insane it would get appealed and overturned, that's just the law for that state.

Judges have discretionary authority to overrule guilty verdicts. While sentencing guidelines are a thing for the most part every single time the defense will file a motion for the verdict to be overruled and this motion is almost always denied.... But it doesn't have to be.

Usually it's overturned when there's an evidentiary problem but stuff like "intent to sell / distribute" seems like it would be fairly trivial to say that there's no evidence of it in most cases where only small amounts of drugs are found.

It is fucking absurd how many things are prisonable offenses where a nominal fine, confiscation of goods and community service would be sufficient.

That is ignoring why people do these things and the largely systemic issues that create these types of people AND that isn't even talking about the fucking racial component. Fun fact, draconian drug laws exist to enslave black people. Shocker of all shockers.

no they are. They sell the hotdogs in packs at the fridge. The exact same ones they sell at the stand. The pack of franks in the fridge costs more than buying them one at a time at the stand so they're definitely losing money on them.

Arraignment is when the judge reads the charge. Arraignment gets waived like 90% of the time bc if you already know the charges it's pointless.

You also enter a plea but if you refuse then you're considered to be pleading not guilty.

You can get around it by using Google home to cast your screen but the quality might be questionable.
