Nier Replicant is awesome (though prob not aged very well) and Nier Automata is one of the most direct sequels ever, so it's def worth playing both in sequence

pay2win means if you pay more you'll win more. That doesn't really apply much to this game. You can boost your win chance by like 5% maybe.

Corporations should be the only ones that actually get the rights listed in the Constitution. It specifically mentions "we the PEOPLE" and an individual person is definitely not "PEOPLE" while a corporation includes multiple individuals and thus is undeniably "PEOPLE"

Insolvency is the root cause that led to this. But lots of companies end up scrambling to come up with revenue after going public. Many succeed by making good choices despite the pressure. This was not a good choice. So yeah it's not the root of failure, but it's a bad fork in the road they went down.

Also, I don't know if this will cause them to fail at all necessarily. They will lose game devs, but they have already pivoted hard away from indie games to movies and bigger games. Those will stick around and they'll make decent money that way. They just won't be the default name you hear when talking about game engines.

I have no problems with expansion, I think this whole splitting the game into 3 parts was risky and interesting enough even if it were faithful.

I guess another thing business wise about the 3 game split is it NEEDS a hook to make people buy the next one. If it was all 1 big game, it would prob still be successful without any story changes. But I don't think it would be something people were necessarily excited for. It would have kind of a sort of academic historical preservation feel to it. Which is cool, but I prefer the excitement of this one, as someone who missed out on the original.

You would not be happy with a faithful remake. The original gameplay and script are ass. It had to be updated.

The crucial paradox is the remake needs to evoke the same emotions as the original, which is impossible by being faithful. The original gameplay felt super fluid and intense with the best graphics ever, so the remake needs to feel that way too, hence realtime action. The original story was epic with wtf moments, so the remake needs its own wtf moments. That's why the shitty new stuff actually made 7R more faithful emotionally. It worked really well. Gamers wouldn't be arguing about it for years if it didn't work.

The original MGS3 is still extremely playable today (even without the Subsistence camera, but that's an option too) and it's arguably still the best MGS experience, so I would definitely agree that remake is pointless. Especially since the remasters exist already and are great. The remake is purely a cash grab by a company that holds a super popular IP but fired all its talent. I'll always celebrate a company doing something riskier like 7R instead.

7R is about 80% lead character, 20% AI characters, but that's still enough for the AI to matter. I can imagine the bad AI becomes a big deal in harder fights. I never took those on because I could tell they would become too frustrating. But for most of the game, ignoring the AI is fine.

7R is trying to anime, 16 is trying to be Game of Thrones. Of course the writing and acting should be different.

I dunno why you want to compare a 90s jrpg to the literal best written game of all time but yeah no shit games writing got better in the 25 years following 7's release.

For most everyone, 7R is just meant to be a bearable way to play 7. It does that perfectly. It's not trying to be the new best video game story.

And yet it still has some surprisingly awesome moments that do compare well to modern writing. It didn't need to do that, but it did, and it's very nice.

Also everything dunkey doesn't like is because it's a jrpg. The original had most all of it. He's right about the robot arm section tho. 7R had 1 too many of those time wasters.

I didn't say I liked it. It's objectively bad. But I do think it improved the experience.

I couldn't play through 7, stopped at wall market, but I know the story pretty well. I also played through all of Crisis Core and I feel like that crystallized 7's story pretty well and helped a lot with 7R.

I don't think you need to play the original but definitely read a summary of the story.

What do you mean by stupid? 90s JRPG stupid - obviously not just you, that's the whole point of the game. But too stupid to enjoy, probably just you. The only harmfully stupid thing was the Kingdom Hearts bullshit, but it was very minor and if that's what it takes to keep Nomura's ego in check, it's worth it.

(Also I would argue the KH BS did actually improve the experience of the game. But we'll have to see how part 2 turns out to know for sure.)

Can't really think of any other good games I played from here. I only remember absolute garbage ones like Tales of Symphonia and Danganronpa. I did try Trails in the Sky and I could tell it was good, just too slow for me.

I might have heard of FE4 from here as well. Especially since the only way to play is through an emulator with a translation patch, so I don't know where else I would have heard of that. That's up there with Undertale for sure. I also played FE7 from here and that sucked hard.

Basically nothing we hear from Unity for the next 2-8 weeks is worth trusting. They're gonna waffle back and forth and try all kinds of things. Who knows where they will end up.

Regardless, Unity is done as an option for most small and medium games.

Previously, same way anything open source did - a few donations here and there, but mostly lots of working part time for free.

But this year they started a commercial company to do contracts and console porting work, so they can get hired directly by devs.

If they enforce the contract retroactively in 2024 like they claim, it's absolutely a class action. Even if the existing contracts technically allow this to happen, it will be on a slim technicality and is very worth fighting. But it does seem like a breach of contract on the surface.

I kinda wonder why they're going this route instead of just charging percentage royalties like Unreal does. That system seems accepted at this point.

This is far more preferable to big live service games, since micro transactions are not included like in a typical rev share model. That is who they're catering to right now since those are the most profitable Unity users. If they lose all their other game devs customers, I don't think they really care.
