AM2R: Return of Samus (PC)

This game rocks. It feels exactly like a lost game in a trilogy with Fusion and Zero Mission. It's a shame Nintendo hasn't made any new Metroid games since Other M but at least there are some great fan games like this one and A Robot Named Fight.

I answered as best I could but a lot of this depends on how good the game is and how annoying the ads are. Like banner ads that are a static image of an actual product are effectively a different type of ad to me than banner ads that play an animation or advertise some stupid clickbait thing.

This was a replay and wow this game is a lot less stressful when you already know that nothing is going to jump scare you. The one pseudo jump scare that I got the first time (the lights going out in the secret passage) didn't even happen this time, which makes me wonder if it was just a glitch or something.

Anyway I love this game. Love to explore a big house. Also love a game about gay women.

We were discussing Newsom a couple weeks ago, but he just threw the trans community under the bus by vetoing a bill the legislature passed to codify that in custody hearings judges should take into account whether a parent affirms their child's gender identity.

https://twitter.com/lara_korte/status/1705414710554984674

He tries to hide it behind "well golly i think we shouldn't single out a single issue like this when determining the best interests of a child" but California (and many other states) already have issues like this included in the standards judges are supposed to use so vetoing one meant to protect trans kids specifically is just gross.

Judges still can consider it (and he also offers that fact up as a shield, but again, he's misrepresenting the situation wrt other "single characteristics") but just complete cravenness on his part and I think it's pretty inarguable he's doing it to try and position for a 2028 presidential run.

It was elevated to Metroidvania status back when there was basically nothing else out there that came close, but I don't think it's a strong example of one in 2023. It's definitely a Kirby game first, and those games often won't let you backtrack at all without restarting the whole level, so it kinda just comes with the territory.

tl;dr: one way doors suck but I don't think it hurts the game much

I'm taking this to mean the characters that are eccentric by Ace Attorney standards and those ones are definitely low quality almost all the time. They don't always actively detract from the game but I'm almost never glad to see them.

I think the whole cast being a little eccentric makes the games way better though. I guess my overall take is that being eccentric is fine but there needs to be something else to your character too.

8Doors: Arum's Afterlife Adventure (Steam)

Okay so I've been sleeping on this game because most of the reception I've seen has been that it's kind of mid, but no, this game is rad as hell. What a great metroidvania. It's got everything I want from this genre of game, even weirdcute characters and a story I was somewhat invested in. It's basically about a Korean afterlife bureaucracy, which immediately reminded me of Death's Door, but I like this game's story, characters, and aesthetic like 100x more.

Gameplay-wise the most interesting thing it did to shake up the metroidvania formula was make your grounded attacks (specifically the last hit of your melee combo) so so so much stronger than your aerials, which really changes up the usual [jump -> attack -> attack again while landing -> repeat] metroidvania combat without going all Soulsy instead. It's not a hard game like it pretends to be but it's juuust tough enough to feel satisfying when you kill a boss or beat a tricky section.

I 100%ed this (except for some challenge achievements that would require separate playthroughs, and achievements for getting the bad/neutral endings) and enjoyed basically every minute of it. Great game.

Depends on the system. Switch, mostly physical. PS5, mostly digital. PC, only digital.

Once physical games starting having constant patches and lengthy installs that was the turning point for me. I want to put in a game cart/disc and start playing immediately. If I have to do an install then your physical game is effectively just a code in a box.

This opens up a lot of interesting problems with whatever the hell Unity's stance on charging for bundles this week is.

What if a developer wants to include a game in a charity bundle, assuming the install fee would be waived, only to be put on the hook for political biases? Gee, what are the odds that, say, a dev puts a game in a charity bundle to support Trans issues, then a group of internet troglodytes get all mad about it, spam Unity to protest, and then Unity caves and orders the developer to pay?
Wow, wait until Unity learns about every single other charity

Waiving the fee for charity bundles was never gonna happen anyway though so this doesn't really change anything, it's just extra evidence for how generally shitty they are

9 Years of Shadows (Steam)

A beautiful metroidvania with a couple unique systems. You get a handful of elemental armors as major powerups and you use them both as progression upgrades (e.g. water armor lets you explore flooded areas) and to deal extra damage to enemies by hitting them with their elemental weaknesses. But you can't always breeze through doing the latter, because sometimes e.g. plant enemies will be in a water room, so you can't use fire armor.

There's also a very unique health system. By default you die in 2 hits, but you have a shield that regenerates a little whenever you hit an enemy. This shield is also the ammo for your projectile, and enemies chunk off huge amounts of it when they hit you. When it's fully exhausted, you can either refill it quickly by passing an active reload QTE or by standing still for a few seconds to charge a heal. It's a lot like Hollow Knight, but it slightly fixes the problem with healing in that game, which is that you can just keep yourself topped off by healing anytime you get hurt. Here you can only heal when you're most vulnerable, so screwing up a heal is pretty devastating (often a game over). There's no way to get back lost HP other than reaching a save point, but shield is easy to get back, so there's a real risk/reward to being aggressive or spamming projectiles vs. playing safely and defensively to preserve shield.

My biggest issues are that the game's pretty linear, the enemy variety is very very low, and the story is kind of half-baked despite how emotional it's clearly supposed to be. Amusingly, the two most common complaints I've seen from others are that 1) the game is too easy and 2) the game is too hard, so I guess YMMV on that.
