Kotaku thinks they're important enough to deserve special treatment.

That's literally true though:

During the British colonial efforts, porters were sent to India for the British Indian army and the British citizens living in India. Unfortunately, the beer spoiled during its long, 6-month voyage to India. The addition of extra hops helped it survive the trip.

Hops are a preservative:
https://www.lightdrinks.co.uk/blogs/latest/the-importance-of-hops
Hops can act as a preservative that prevents the beer from spoiling, adds flavour, aroma and provides a good head on beer.

Casual reminder that IPAs were invented because British ale going to India kept spoiling, so they just jammed it with as many preservatives as possible so they would have some kind of alcoholic swill to drink on the other end. It's the beer equivalent of McDonald's burgers.

I even bolded the relevant parts, but you've moved on to the part of a losing argument where you boldly declare that your opponent should be ignored rather than their argument, so you might as well move on to the part where you say you don't have time to entertain the discussion anymore so you can quietly leave the topic on your own terms

A straw man is a misrepresentation of a position. You have very clearly stated your position that a teacher taking a phone from the student would constitute assault if the student felt threatened, a position that you keep saying over and over again nobody has disproven.

If you want to claim it's a complete coincidence that you just happen to be making their exact same point, you can go ahead and do that. But I don't think I've misrepresented your position at all. If anything, I have clarified for you that your position perfectly aligns with what they were saying, which you wouldn't have known since you said you never went into the topic.

The big difference between the top and the bottom is that many of the examples in the top are games developed by engine developers, and the bottom is games made by people who license those engines.

The people in the top were heavily incentivized to optimize their engine because that was the product they were selling to other companies. The games were a means of marketing what their engine could do. Nowadays, if you're a large studio just licensing one of those engines you probably have zero in a knowledge of the inner workings of that engine and therefore would really struggle to truly understand how to optimize for it.

A game made by an engine developer is almost universally going to be more well-optimized. It's an expertise problem more than anything.

A Dynasty Warriors movie? Hmm when did this come out, I may have to check it out.

A few years back, IIRC. It's live action wire-fu style combat but they don't shy away from how much of a meme the games are. Like... the movie begins with the yellow turban rebellion and we actually get to see the main characters use their musou specials against hoards of enemies, causing them to all go flying into the air like in the games. Lu Bu is, of course, an unrivaled threat.

It's not a good movie, but it's a fun movie.

It certainly captured the feel of musou combat in a weird, goofy way. The bridge battle in particular. And yet it still doesn't enroach on the ability to find more varied manga compared to finding more varied comics. Meanwhile non super hero comics often get ignored in favor of manga.

Oh, absolutely. The variety of stories is definitely a major part of all of this. But that's also why I think the format in which it sold is so important. Comics are kind of pricey, so buyers are being forced to choose between a known quantity like Superman or something they've never heard of before. If you buy an issue of shounen jump, you're going to get the issue you want along with like 19 other stories you may flip through and end up liking, all for roughly the same price of a single comic issue.

It's much easier to sell a weird concept if it's bundled with more popular series. It gives that concept an opportunity to present itself and gain followers without having to compete directly against the big anchor titles that sell the magazine.

Edit: which, funny enough, is how strip malls work as well. You have big anchor stores like Best buy or a food store that you know is going to draw a consistent crowd, and then that strip mall is filled with a whole bunch of smaller stores that sell more niche products. Those smaller stores are never going to be able to draw their own crowd, but if they're within walking distance of a place that people want to go to they will eventually start to draw enough people to succeed as its own entity.

It seems a bit ignorant to think Manga is winning just because it has some hotties in it alot of female heroines tend to look like porn stars in stripper costumes too and people actually get mad when they don't I remember a huge rage fit in comic world years ago when Wonder Woman started wearing pants instead of how she looked in things like Justice League both the old show and the 00s era show

That kind of goes back to your original point though. Manga artists are assigned editors who often guide them in the story making process and will occasionally redirect their story towards what seems to be more popular with the fan base. Like, the only reason Dragon Ball had a tournament in the first place was because the series was underperforming and Toriyama's editor told him that people liked fighting more.

So like, if comic book artists are making changes to establish characters and the readers are being pissy about it, the manga approach would be to pivot back towards what people seem to want. The comics approach seems to be to push it out and then talk about how shitty their buyers are for not wanting it.

The format is also bad for sales. Marvel and DC want to sell you 10 pages of comic with 10 pages of ads for like $6 an issue. Manga comes in collected bundles where $10 gets you like 20 different comics.

It would kind of depend on whether the wizard even recognized a gun or not. Some of them seem blissfully unaware of practically any technology.

But also, this is a world where you can literally sidestep magic spells, so the wizard's not really going to be able to do anything here. The wizard would not only have to pull his wand out, but complete a full incantation and weave the magics into the air before the spell could go off. The guy with a gun just has to pull the trigger.

I'm not talking about some regulation keeping them from leaving. I'm just saying their press releases and stories like this should contain actual facts and context, not just NY Post style right wing framing.

What does that actually change, though? It's not going to stop these businesses from up and leaving, and whether it's ultimately because of theft or taxation, I don't think forcing companies to throw up a chart when they leave is going to shame them into sticking around. The end result is still the same.

If you're going to suggest passing a law that relates to situations like this, why not pass one that actually incentivizes them to not leave?

I don't think we should be uncritically swallowing narratives that have turned out to be false countless times before and that aren't supported by the actual data on theft or crime.

Large corporations and the people that own them have a vested interest in portraying areas that tax and regulate them more as lawless hell holes and attribute normal business failure to that. They should need to present actual evidence of the causes for closures and then explain why the solution isn't to tax them more to meet economic needs.

That never comes up though because the framing inexorably leads to electing conservatives and increasing policing.

You're probably right (about taxes vs crime), but the problem with this approach is that you can't force a company to stick around. Making them pass some kind of test to leave deprives owners of legitimate freedom to manage their own finances. Arguing that any company that wants to go should be bled dry until they go under is cruelty bordering on fascism.

So then what happens? The area's policies drive business away, income drops, resources are starved, and you get Detroit. You need a balance of incentives to make people WANT to work in your city enough to be willing to pay the price. All stick and no carrot turns areas into slums.

I think a lot of people have this vision of FDR but they're not really aware of what his policies were.

When he first tried to pass a lot of his policies, the Supreme Court ruled it was unconstitutional so he packed the courts.

His whole approach towards joblessness were public works programs. He didn't send people checks, he invented jobs that needed to be done and then gave people those jobs.

And then of course there's the whole him hiding his sickness using camera tricks and things like that out of fear that if the public knew he was partially paralyzed they might not re-elect him.

That's not to say he didn't do a lot of good. Just that I think time has smoothed over some of the wrinkles on what his presidency was actually like.

I would assume people who actually want to enjoy the moment to moment gameplay that they're experiencing over the 60 or 80 hours in between cutscenes.

They've already showcased that there's some ring system that lets people automate combat if they don't feel like actually playing the game. It's highly customizable, too. You can just automate dodging, or automate attacks, or automate special moves... however much you want to take away in terms of gameplay to get back to that turn-based feel you can go right ahead and do that.
