Yeah it's not like stealth is hard in a bethesda game. But I had maxed out stealth skill (it's easy when you just kill innocent people for an hour in New Atlantis as soon as you get there) and enemies would still catch me in certain missions for seemingly no reason.

I spent 12 hours just doing side quests and ended up really hating the game at first because a lot of those inconsequential "Activities" didn't really do anything for me and there wasn't a lot of action to them.

But I'm level 26 now and shit is actually pretty fun.

I do wish it explained more. I barely know how to begin building a ship and that's just because I was randomly clicking in the shipbuilding screen, and I can't even really build a ship because I don't have the skills for it. And my outpost is just sitting there with a full thing of lead and I guess I can't even land at it even though I built a landing pad there.

This shit keeps happening to me and it's wearing me out.

A few years ago I started online college courses through a state university. Very first class I run into someone I hadn't worked with in over ten years. We were both in the military back then, but she got out and was working as a contractor. Had zero relation to the state university (it is my home state), was just taking courses because they offer a specific program there that's rare. We have different Majors and she was at a different point in her degree, and I was taken aback by the exceedingly limited likelihood of running into someone like that in an online class of like 30 people.

Fast forward to last night... there's a lady I went to job training with nearly 15 years ago (for the military). We worked together for a couple of years after completing the training, I had a crush on her and we were both fresh out of high school but she always seemed to bounce around between relationships and I was too timid/passive to just come out and make a move. She ended up marrying some guy, moving to Japan, getting divorced, dating some other guy and that's the last I ever really heard about her. Then I'm at this exclusive dinner party with maybe forty people total at it, and my wife recognizes this lady instantly and I'm like "no friggin' way". She is now married to someone at a local command that was attending this party.

There are even dumber examples like ordering a snack out of a vending machine only to see it's the last one of its kind - there's something different behind it in the machine... twice in one day at two different institutions when I don't even normally buy from vending machines.

It feels like these life circumstances happen just to mock me or make me question reality or something. Anyone else experience random shit like this?

all the pronoun controversy on the Steam forums just pissed me off.

First off, it's dumb. There's no political agenda or secret pro LGBT conspiracy in the game. You make your character, it asks you to choose your pronouns and that's it. It's like five seconds into the game. These asshats turned it into some war on straight people and even started bringing race into it (complaining there were too many minorities).

Secondly the game doesn't even use pronouns like ever, at least not in reference to your character. I think they've said it maybe once or twice if that, it's a first person game so most people are just calling you "you" anyway.

And all the "outrage" about it made the forums completely unusable.

Also one thing that bugs the heck out of me is the structure of the skill trees. Like why is Persuasion a Tier 1 skill you can get right off the bat, but other types of speech are not? Maybe that's how the pen and paper version is but it just makes for weird video game design when every other game I've played lets you choose one or more styles from the getgo so you can be a smooth talker or total threatening A Hole or any combination thereof to resolve situations as you want without forcing you to play for hours upon hours upon hours to get to those different speech styles.

It's one of those RPG's where you need to earn a lot of QOL stuff through leveling. For a modern game it has a steep curve to overcome before you find your groove.

I don't think this makes it a bad game personally. AAA games like this aren't usually designed like this anymore for reasons that are kinda obvious.
I wouldn't say it's bad because there's a lot of stuff you need to unlock through leveling. I think it has a rough start because it doesn't play like other Bethesda games and it's not quite compelling enough to make it as an open world survival title, either.

I am enjoying it more after getting ... over 10 hours in, but I was trying to play it like Fallout 4 or Skyrim and it just doesn't have the same flow at all. Too many mundane boring side quests to get caught up in which are good for variety but not great when they're the first things you encounter if you try to stray from the main mission.

Also the game doesn't explain like ANY of its systems. Still learning who the factions are, I started building an outpost but I don't even know how everything all works (like apparently power just automatically feeds to other buildings without the need to build cabling or anything). I am excited to learn how to build outposts but right now feel like I don't have enough resources to really delve into it.

That's fine, but that does not really invalidate my experience with the game and my subsequent opinion based on that experience.

And I am trying to play it just like how I would have played any other Bethesda game. Except with other Bethesda games the desire to explore just feels more natural - yeah maybe you're delivering cookies to grandma's house, but on the way you risk getting attacked by some bandits and you might discover a little haunted outpost and fight some ghosts.

In Starfield I have not had that experience yet... at all. People say there are pirate outposts on the planets and all that but I haven't really had any desire to explore out there and the game has given me zero reason to explore out there.

Admittedly my fast travel technique was not the most efficient for a while so I could have saved maybe ten minutes total going from city to starship and back but the rest of it... Unless there's a way to fast travel from planet to planet without going through the launch animation, fast travel screen and then docking/landing animation. Even then, it's just a boring experience.

omg I played the game for four more hours and this is the most boring shit.

The main story so far is boring generic sci-fi crap. The characters are boring. The lore is boring. We're miners on Mars and the company we work for treats us bad! Certainly haven't seen that one before, like, EVER, am I right?

So I decide to branch out, do some side missions. 10% of my time is spent in loading screens. A little girl wants me to hang up her drawings of a space frog on the walls. Cool. Three loading screens later I got 12 credits and have unlocked space frog drawings for my outposts, which I imagine I'm about 100 hours away from ever unlocking at this rate. This other guy wants me to mine iron for him so I mine iron then he wants me to fudge a job application so I go through a million loading screens to get to a space station to interact with a computer for three seconds so I can go back through a million loading screens so he can say "good job".

The only shooting I've seen outside of the initial tutorial area(s) is the shooting I've done of innocent people to max my stealth skill, that's it.

Calling it a "great" game is kind of an exaggeration imo. It's just like the issue I had with Skyrim and Fallout 4 - it's a *unique* game that fills a niche virtually no other game can fill, but it also doesn't do anything spectacularly.

The most blatant and annoying thing to me is the non-existent writing. Some examples of missions follow. But like when you make your character you have the ability to choose up to 3 starting traits. Some of these align you with a certain religious faction, some with certain political factions, some are more self-explanatory (start with a huge mansion but have to pay off a mortgage to maintain access, start with your parents alive and you paying them 2% of your credits each week but you get to visit them). But I have ZERO IDEA who the eff all these factions are. The game does nothing to explain what their ideology or history is, just that if I choose the Hungry Hungry Hippos then I'll get some sort of reward from them later on but then I can't get a reward from the Crouching Tigers or the Hidden Dragons. Or, maybe I *can* get a reward, I just have to work for it? There's ZERO explanation.

The world building is very crap. So far everything feels like generic space opera nonsense. For instance, a very early mission has you investigating an electrical "brownout" in the slums of a city. You end up working with a city employee who guides you to electrical boxes where you just flip a switch. The electricity overload is traced back to an organization called "the Trade Authority". Then you investigate further and find out that basically someone was using a lot of electricity to hack a bank's transactions to get money. You can either sell this information to the Trade Authority or give it to the person that you've been working for. And that's it. A couple other missions in this part of the city have you doing very basic stuff like listening to a conversation and then telling the mission giver you listened to the conversation, or talking to a doctor about a very generic health concern and getting medical notes from a colleague that will help the doctor working in the slums.

It's all a lot of just... *busy work*, except it doesn't really do anything to build the world up like at all. After doing all these missions I don't really feel like I understand anything about this universe any more than I did going into the game. And the mission log doesn't tell you *shit*, so heaven forbid you miss some dialogue or take on several missions and then want context for each one later on.

Also the lockpicking is dumb beyond belief. Every hack or lockpick *attempt*, successful or not, consumes one "digipick". And the minigame is just time consuming. It stopped being fun after the first few times I did it.

ALSO the AI sucks trash - I found a VERY great "sniping" spot for my silenced pistol, killed 7 completely innocent people in rapid succession (trying to upgrade my stealth perk and that's the fastest way and there's zero repercussion since no one saw me). Went to loot the bodies afterwards, realized there were several guards just hanging out, didn't respond a single time to people dying in front of them or to me looting dead bodies.

Space flight... I haven't done too much of it, but it really seems like mostly just getting in your ship, leaving the planet, loading up the map of where you want to go, and then fast traveling there. Maybe you can fly between planets in a single system but I haven't attempted this yet.

Maybe outpost building will be fun and worth it, I definitely am not that far yet.

It feels like a Bethesda game except with even more pointless items to pick up. I have played a few hours now, so far I really only got into one serious combat situation in the "tutorial" area (if you can call it that), rest of the time has been just doing busy work for random ass hats with like no payoff.

On the flip side you level up individual skills by completing "challenges" for them. For the Stealth skill you have to get more and more stealth hits with silenced weapons, so I'm just going around tagging random civilians on the first planet so I can level it up (each skill has like four ranks).
